Hooked By Love by Toni Aleo is Now Available & Reviewed

Things are out of control for the Sinclair boys! With two already in the NHL, Jace Sinclair is ready to follow in his brothers’ HUGE skates in the last Bellevue Bullies novel…

Jace Sinclair here, and I’m amazing. There is no other way to describe me. I am the leading scorer for the Bellevue Bullies, I’m the captain, and people love me: my family, my teammates, my coach, and the NHL. I already have one foot in the draft and I’m ready. This is my last year in college–it’s basically a conditioning year to get me ready for the NHL, to further my game, and I have to be focused. But then, it’s also my last year to have fun and not give a damn before my life really starts. Which means I’m gonna run through every girl I meet. That’s my plan. Because my one and only love is hockey. It keeps me warm even when it’s freezing. It’s always there when nothing else is. And it pushes me to be the best I can be. It’s my love.

That is, until I see her against a tree with a guitar.

Avery.

The last thing I wanted was to meet anyone. My heart is on the bench because I’ve watched my mom get broken by the person I call my father, and I don’t want that for myself. I don’t want to be hurt by anyone. I can’t give them that power.

But my heart is begging for ice time, and I can’t control it around her.

* * *

I’ve always been in the background. No one has ever had time for me and that’s fine; I’ve learned to cope. Coming from a family where hockey is life, the last thing I want is some big, burly hockey player charging at me. I don’t have time for it, but Jace Sinclair isn’t one to be deked around. The thing is, I came to the University of Bellevue for one reason and one reason only. To make my dreams of being a singer/songwriter come true. To work in the industry and pay my dues. Become who I really want to be.

I didn’t want to meet anyone. I didn’t want to end up freezing the puck with him. It’s not what I want.

I have demons.

I have issues.

Living in the shadows, no one even knew until it was too late. But Jace wants to know.

He wants me.

And that scares me the living hell out of me.

We were so worried about what would happen if we fell, but we never thought what could happen in the process of falling. We never saw it coming. But it’s here, and the repercussions are not pretty. We should have known that there is no way out of the zone when you are being Hooked by Love.

When I signed up to read Hooked by Love, I hadn’t read the previous books in the series and had planned to do so before beginning it. However, with the holidays and travel, I didn’t get a chance to do so. Fortunately, Aleo has written the Bellevue Bullies series in such a way that I had no problem picking up with book three as it’s about the youngest of the Sinclair brothers, Jace. That said, I now have a need to go back and read the previous books because the Sinclair family is absolutely awesome and I want to see how Jace’s brothers met their matches – especially Jayden and Baylor.

First and foremost, I absolutely adored that Jace proved almost immediately that he couldn’t be the player with the ladies he wanted to be. Did he and Avery connect a little too quickly? Just a tad. But the way things go down between them, it worked for them. Jace falls hard and fast for Avery, but because of Avery’s past, she holds herself back. Despite her hesitancy, or perhaps because of it, she agrees to a friends with exclusive benefits arrangement with Jace. The arrangement is cute because it’s what Jace wanted without the label and while the label is what scares the mess out of Avery, Jace still wants it. He wants to be able to claim Avery as his and change his Facebook relationship status – and yes, I loved this aspect of the story as it made the characters seem that much more real. What added to the realism of the story is the obstacles they faced. Jace and Avery’s relationship is not an easy one and their journey is not smooth at all. Without giving anything away, things occur that force the young couple to question their commitment to one another repeatedly and each time they have to decide whether or not their future will be together.

I loved Hooked by Love because even though this is a new adult sports romance, the angst was not over-the-top. Jace and Avery deal with realistic situations appropriate to their age and place in life. Even though no one wants to believe that Avery could come from a family that ignored her so fully in comparison to her brothers, it happens. The relationship between Avery and her twin, Matty, was absolutely appalling and it broke my heart for her. I was glad that their parents got an opportunity to see it for themselves, giving them a chance to address the issue and begin repairing the relationship with their daughter. As bad as the Avery’s relationship was with her family, Jace’s relationship with his mother and siblings was great. I loved how close knit his family was, which is what made his father’s actions absolutely despicable. I really enjoyed how Aleo revealed the details about Avery’s past over the course of the book and that she addressed a very sensitive subject so carefully – Avery’s mental health issue was presented in a realistic manner both in how it manifested and how she dealt with it. I also liked how the final few chapters jump forward in time to show the reader the most important parts of the couples’ life, including the concert and the draft. I thoroughly enjoyed Hooked by Love and look forward to reading more from the Bellevue Bullies series.
