Polished by Erica Chilson

When you’re a divorce lawyer, nothing is more terrifying than marital problems, especially when they involve your husband thinking the ability to mind-read translates into unconditional love.

Daniel Bishop calls his old roommate for help – Kaden Marx loves nothing more than running to someone’s rescue after a decade of always being the one in distress. Neither guy realizes their husbands have been conspiring for months – Uriah Crane has already confided in Wynn Gillette, and then some.

After being lied to his entire life, Wynn will never allow his nearest and dearest to lie to one another or to themselves. Determined, this time, the truths that need to be revealed match up with fantasies Wynn hungers to live out in reality.

Dan’s at his wits’ end.
Uriah is lost.
Kade is in denial.
Wynn is in charge.

Rusty Knob visits Pittsburgh in the present, but Polished revisits another Pennsylvania town, in another era – State College, back to where all the secrets and lies began for Dan, Kade, and Uriah at Penn State University.

“I have to admit, that makes me jealous.”

“What does?” Silence rings, Kade must have stopped moving. “You have seven years of higher education, so I know it’s not the online courses.”

“How you and Wynn work through your shit.” I answer after a few moments.

“You mean by fighting and fucking?” Kade jests. I know they fight and fuck constantly, but when it matters, they get right to the heart of the matter and fix it immediately. “We just accept that we’re going to hurt the other’s feelings by telling the truth. But it goes both ways, until his pain is mine. It’s almost punishing, until we’re thinking of each other more than our own needs.”

“Yeah, but–”

“I’m a selfish bastard, Daniel.” Kade calls me by my birth name, so I know I’m in for it. “The more selfless I become, the more selfish Wynn gets, until we’re balancing each other out… Wynn told me the other day how he either had to go to Bren’s, or he was going to punch me in the nuts.”

“What were you doing?”

“Annoying the piss outta him.” Kade chuckles darkly. “I learned a lesson on how to control myself, or else it will either emotionally hurt when Wynn runs away from me, or physically hurt when he punches me.”

“I… Uriah and I can’t be like that,” I mutter in mystification, never once resorting to violence or manipulation in our relationship. We rarely argue, never have I yelled at Uriah. “What works for you guys, most definitely won’t work for us.”

“How about you tell me what’s going on, and I’ll try to fix it?” Kade’s voice is coaxing, a tone he mastered way after we roomed together.

Kade’s a grown man now, strong enough to shoulder many burdens– a part of me is sad Kade doesn’t need me anymore, but a larger part is thrilled we’re finally equal in power within our friendship.

I’ll admit it to myself, but never aloud– the confidence in Kade’s voice goes straight to my dick, even if it has guilt suffocating me.

This is the fourth book in the series – and you would miss out if you read it as a standalone, yet I do believe it stands very firmly on its own as a really good story. Enough background is given for a new reader to get the dynamics and politics of the main players. If your interest is strongly in finding a book which gives voice to those along the spectrum of sexuality and love, then this is a moving read.

Kaden and Wynn have been on our radars from the beginning, but the impact on Kaden has not been seen so clearly before. His time at college with Dan, and the move forwards and backwards in time is very effective at giving value to their friendship and love for one another. Dan is a fascinating man, and his way of thinking is so intense, and so heartwarming. Meeting Uriah has such an enormous impact on him; it is stunning.

Coming to understand, to accept and acknowledge how they all feel about one another is so brilliantly written, that I felt I was feeling the emotions and clicking the logic into place right along with them. I love that these men all see different facets, yet it is together that the picture can become clear.

I shall say no more, you really need to dive in and absorb the goodness as you read. I envy you the excitement of a first read, but enjoyed my second read a huge amount too!

It is advised that you read Wager (if reading the Blended series) before reading the epilogue, and I do think this is excellent advice – but if you cannot bear to wait, it truly won't ruin Wager, just ease your heart a touch, and make you smile, as you read it!

Firstly, I have to say I loved the chapter titles. They put me in a good mood from the first chapter.

Much of the story in Polished takes us back to Dan and Kade’s college days and follows how Dan and Uriah met and how they became a couple. Dan and Uriah are from very different backgrounds and on the surface, seem like an unlikely pairing. For me, that is part of what makes them so good together.

When the story is in the present, Dan and Uriah are having issues and Wynn has been working in the background to try to solve all of their problems.

I enjoyed Polished immensely. Sometimes I was having fun with the romance, relationships, and heat, and other times I was sad, emotional, and angry. Dan and Uriah are both courageous in their own ways. I confess I found Dan to be a little self-righteous, which bugged me and comforted in equal parts.

The epilogue (which is also the epilogue for Wager, also by Ms. Chilson) is brilliant.

Polished wraps up with a brilliant epilogue, but I wished Polished had included more time with all four of them, but maybe I’m just being a greedy reader. I think it is time I went back to the start of Rusty Knob and did a re-read.

OHMIGOD!!! You guys, I cannot even begin to explain how much I enjoyed my first beta read through of Polished. Wynn, my sweet, sweet Wynn, has come into his own and he's a force to be reckoned with. This might be Dan and Kade's story, but Wynn will likely always take center stage for me. I'll try to write up a better review after my second beta read through, but if you've read the previous books in this series, you are not gonna wanna miss Polished.

And I’m back. I didn’t quite finish the second beta read through, but I wanted to expand my review a bit, especially now that I’ve come down from my Wynn high – I do so love that boy.

I used to say that I despised flashback storylines. Yet I’ve discovered that some authors are quite talented at writing such transitions from present to past and back again seamlessly, and it just so happens that Chilson is one such author. As such, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet Kade, Daniel, and Uriah while they were in college. Getting to see Kade and Daniel’s first day at Penn State, the utter devastation Kaden dealt with that day, and how Daniel protected that vulnerability, guarded it, and played a huge part in forming the Kaden Marx that readers met in Rusty Knob was… just… I was captivated.

Equally enthralling was seeing how Daniel and Uriah met. Watching the two tip-toe through the minefield of Uriah’s past, the manner in which he supplemented his income, and his genderfluidity as they began to lay the foundation of friendship was fascinating. Seeing Daniel not exactly struggle, but rather attempt to reset his personal beliefs about attraction as he found himself drawn to Uriah more with each passing day. I loved it all. Seeing how their time together changed their personal trajectories and how it didn’t kept me glued to my Kindle.

Of course, having all that history revealed to the reader and seeing just how many hurdles Daniel and Uriah had to overcome to be together made their predicament in the present that much more heartbreaking – at least for me it did. Fortunately, Wynn took the reins and I found my mood improving significantly as Kade’s (and my) favorite little shit forced the three men, whose lives and love had been so tightly intertwined in college, to face their feelings and acknowledge what they’d refused to admit to since the beginning. And as that obstacle was finally laid to waste, Wynn shoved them all through the door to a new beginning and toward a polyamorous relationship, albeit a long-distance one. Then again, considering how hot the bedroom scene was, it’s probably a good thing that there were a couple hundred miles separating them.

As I beta read both Polished and Wager, I abso-freaking-lutely LOVED the epilogue. I loved, loved, loved that we got to see the polys from both series (Rusty Knob and Blended) meet face-to-face for the first time and discuss their relationships with one another. And I have to cut myself off right there because I’ve probably already said more than I should, but I don’t want to give away any more surprises. I’ll just say that the epilogue left me wanting more from both series so that I can get updates on their relationships – especially for Wynn & Kade and Daniel & Uriah.

Reader’s Note: Dan is from a conservative, republican family who are very active in politics. As such, his views have been shaped – both good and bad – by his upbringing. You won’t understand the full impact of what I’ve just said until you read Dan’s story, because while parts of his views will be as you may expect, other parts won’t. So, keep this in mind while you’re reading Dan’s story, and remember that we’re not all stereotypes and neither is Dan.

Full Disclosure – I'm a bit biased toward Chilson's work, especially the Rusty Knob series. After all, I did begin stalking the author on Facebook several years ago to find out when Good Girl would be released, managed to get in on its beta read, and haven't stopped pestering the author since.

Erica Chilson does not write in the 3rd person, wanting her readers to be her characters. Therefore, writing a bio about herself, is uncomfortable in the extreme.

Born, raised, and here to stay, the Wicked Writer is a stump-jumper, a ridge-runner. Hailing from North Central Pennsylvania, directly on the New York State border; she loves the changes in seasons, the humid air, all the mountainous forest, and the gloomy atmosphere.

Introverted, but not socially awkward, Erica prides herself on thinking first and filtering her speech. There are days she doesn’t speak at all. If it wasn’t for the fact that she lives with her parents, giving her a sense of reality, she would be a hermit, where the delivery man finds her months after expiration.

Reading was an escape, a way to leave a not-so pleasant reality behind. Reading lent Erica the courage she gathered from the characters between the pages to long for a different life. Writing was an instrument of change, evolving Erica into the woman she is today- a better, more mature, more at peace thinker.

Erica has a wicked mind, one she pours out into her creations. Her filter doesn’t allow all of it to erupt, much to her relief. Sarcastic, with a very dark, perverse sense of humor, Erica puts a bit of herself into every character she writes.

Darkest Temptation by Rachel Van Dyken

I'm a werewolf King who chose to step down out of grief for my mate.
For centuries I've been alone, choosing to live a life of modesty despite the wealth surrounding me.
I deserve to be punished.
I crave things I have no business craving.
And it is manifesting itself in a way I'm terrified I won't be able to control any longer.
Especially since she arrived.
Vampire. Orphan. Beaten beyond recognition.
My blood calls to her in a way that makes no sense.
I'm a wolf.
She's a vampire.
The two don't mate.
They barely tolerate one another.
All it takes is one slip of control on my part — one taste.
And I doom us all.
Then again, I never knew what is lurking inside has the power to balance good and evil.

O.M.G. I absolutely cannot get enough of this series, literally one of my favorites ever and I’ve been anxiously awaiting Mason’s story since the moment he was introduced at the beginning of book one. This was one of those books that I couldn’t put down, but at the same time didn’t want to keep reading because I knew the ending would come too soon – loved every single page. Definitely recommend starting from the beginning of the series – you won’t regret it.

From the moment Serenity and Mason see one another they have an incredible connection, but not only do vampires and werewolves never get together, neither of the two believes they deserve happiness. They both struggle with accepting that it’s their destiny to be together and it’s finally time for Mason to take back his rightful place as king of the werewolves. I love that this story takes such a different route then the previous books in the series – it keeps the series fresh and interesting!

My absolute favorite part of this book was finally learning the story of Mason’s past. He’s so tortured and sad in the previous books, and I was excited to get his backstory. He and Serenity were absolutely perfect together, I love both their characters. This is a fast-paced pager turner and once you start you won’t want to stop. I really enjoyed getting to “see” the characters from the previous books as well – the epilogue is incredible, and I think I might die waiting for the next installment!

Facing West by Lucy Lennox

The first book in a new series by Lucy Lennox!

Nico

I left my family and tiny Texas hometown fifteen years ago to escape small-town gossips and to give my mom and sister the chance at a better life. But when a phone call from an attorney back home informs me that my sister passed away, leaving me custody of her newborn baby, I’m shocked out of the steady life I’ve built for myself running a tattoo shop in San Francisco.

The thing is: I don’t do babies. And I don’t do small towns. Or commitment. And I especially don’t do family. My plan is to go back to Hobie just long enough to sign adoption papers, giving my niece the kind of stable, loving family I could never provide.

But the moment I meet my niece in the arms of Weston Wilde, my sister’s best friend and the town’s handsome doctor, my plans begin to change. Because suddenly, I see a different future. One with the very thing I thought I never deserved: a family. If only I can convince West that I’m not the same good-for-nothing kid ready to bolt when things get tough.

Weston

There’s one thing I know for sure about Nico Salerno: he was a good-for-nothing as a kid and judging by the purple-haired, tattoo’d punk who shows up at his sister’s funeral, he hasn’t changed. There’s no way I’m letting him take custody of my best friend’s baby.

But the more time I spend around him, the more I realize that his rough exterior is just a shell and that beneath all the tattoos is a scared, insecure man searching for a place to belong. And pretty soon I know exactly where he belongs: in my bed and by my side.

The problem is, he abandoned his family once before, how do I know that if we become a family he won’t do it again?

Facing West is the first in the new Forever Wilde series about the huge Wilde family from Hobie, Texas, whose patriarchs aren’t above a little meddling if that’s what it takes to help their grandkids find true love.

This is a spin-off series from the Made Marian series, which by the way is fan-freaking-tastic!! This book is about Nico, who we met in the Made Marian series, and West. I flipping loved this book. I laughed, cried, and fell in love. West and Nico are polar opposites, but are soooo good together. Nico not only lost his sister, but also his mom and gained a niece, Pippa. West lost his best friend. West and the whole Wilde family are just amazing. The Wilde family rallied around Nico and Pippa, and as the reader, I felt part of the family. This was a great start to another series I know I will want to devour. I highly recommend this book and the prior series as well. High on love, sex, and laughs and mild angst.

After enjoying creative writing as a child, Lucy didn’t write her first novel until she was over 40 years old. Her debut novel, Borrowing Blue, was published in the autumn of 2016. Lucy has an English Literature degree from Vanderbilt University, but that doesn’t hold a candle to the years and years of staying up all night reading tantalizing novels on her own. She has three children, plays tennis, and hates folding laundry. While her husband is no shmoopy romance hero, he is very good at math, cooks a mean lasagne, has gorgeous eyes, looks hot in his business clothes, and makes her laugh every single day.

Lucy hopes you enjoy sexy heroes as much as she does. Happy reading!

Bleeding Love by Harper Sloan

I've loved once. I gave everything that I had to that love. Blindly believing that nothing could ever take that feeling away from me. Away from us. And when my little world of happiness was ripped from my fingers, I felt a loss that still haunts me to this day.

Now I use that lingering grief as a shield to keep my heart from loving again. It's that fear that keeps me from letting anyone, except my daughter, get close enough to make it hurt. To make my heart bleed when I inevitably lose again.

Until the day I met Liam Beckett and everything I thought I had protected myself from was shoved back in my face.

He's on a mission to prove to me that a love worth having is a love worth fighting for.

Bleeding Love is the second book in the Hope Town series.
Each book in the series is a HEA and can be read as a standalone.

Bleeding Love is the second book in the Hope Town series, which of course is the spin-off to the Corps Security series. The characters in Hope Town are the children of the characters in Corps Security.

Now that all of that is out of the way, Bleeding Love is the story of Liam and Megan. Megan is an author and single mother, widowed a few years ago. Her late husband was friends with Cohen, which is how she becomes part of their little group. He's kept an eye on her since she has no one else in her life but her daughter, Molly. Liam has had an attraction to Megan, but Megan has never been in the right head space for Liam. Liam is anything but a quitter, with his sweet talking ways and the help of a little girl, Megan falls for Liam while she fights the past.

It's no secret Ms. Sloan can write some swoon worthy characters, Liam Beckett is no exception. I love that we get to see a little peek of Beck and Dee even though it's their son's story. Liam and Megan's story is sweet and sexy, but Molly (Megan's daughter) is a favorite of mine. She is an adorable character.

I can't wait to see what Ms. Sloan does next.

The Kline family has taken over Fairport… Devon knows himself too well, how he’ll be up in their business, taking on their problems, and no one can have that catastrophe happen.

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
I love reading about the Mason family in all its glory. This novella takes us on a journey of how Essie, Beth, Devon, and Rory decide to make their foursome work.

To say it’s not as simple as it sounds, is an understatement. In a typical relationship, two people are having to work together and compromise. Imagine four people. Four sets of feelings, points of view, and emotions. Now, toss in the real world who just won't understand why you do what you do.

Not only is each person committed to their partner, they are also committed in some way to each other, and not always sexual. Each person has their own feelings and desires and the others respect those.

For Devon, this journey is about love, commitment, and family. For him, the love and support he has from Essie, Beth, and Rory are just what he needs to heal.

Shannan☆☆☆☆☆
Wager is the 7th installment in the Blended series. It shouldn't be read as a standalone. It should be read in the order the author intended.

Wager is Devon's story... well Devon, Essie, Rory, and Beth's told from Devon's point of view. I love this quad of people so much. Two married couples that need each other in ways that their partners can't fulfill, whether it's sexual, mental, friend... they find solace in each other.

Wager is a sexy quick read, for once I wish one of Ms. Chilson's books was longer. I needed more of this foursome. The relationship I needed to see between Rory and Devon has been building and I am ecstatic to finally get to see that to fruition. I wish I had people in my life like Devon does, people that would do anything to protect and love you so unconditionally, other than your spouse.

*Reviewer's Note*
I have not read the epilogue yet. The final chapter is shared with Polished (book 4) in the Rusty Knob series. I am currently reading Polished but not to that point as of yet. My fingers did get a bit twitchy to turn to that page, but I followed the warning Ms. Chilson posted saying it would be a spoiler for Polished... that took some serious willpower!!

Ruthie☆☆☆☆☆
This book deserves five stars because of how it brings together many strands from previous books in the series – and in particular, because it gives the reader an amazing insight into who Devon really is. Any fan of the series will know that he hardly started out with stellar reviews, and the journey has been rocky to say the least... but even I have to admit that he deserves everything that Ms. Chilson is bestowing upon him.

This is a fun read, with lots of amusing plotting and revelations, which make the heart sing for these four people and their wonderfully unique and intense connections to each other. It makes one think about how convention stifles true desires and loves, and how freedom comes with responsibility as well as joy.

It is advised that you read Polished (if reading the Rusty Knob series) before reading the epilogue, and I do think this is excellent advice – but if you cannot bear to wait, it truly won't ruin Polished, just ease your heart a touch as you read!

Veronica☆☆☆☆☆
Devon plans a fun weekend away in Vegas for himself, Essie, Beth and Rory, and Devon and Beth plan to make the two couples into one polyamorous relationship. I loved seeing the four of them come together, and when it happens inside the bedroom, it is off-the-charts hot.

But for me, this story was all about Devon. Dev is my new hero. And if you’d asked me early on in the Blended series what I thought of Devon, I would not have had much positive to say. But now, at the 7th book in the series, I see Devon in different light. The struggles he has been through and what he faces just to get through every day and stay sane, show his strength and how amazing he is. And if I wasn’t already crazy about him, the pool side scene in Wager would have changed my mind. Reading this scene, I just wanted to get jump up and cheer, but I was on public transport so I had to get by with cheering on the inside.

Wager finishes with a brilliant epilogue that has left me dying for more Blended stories. Five very happy stars from me.

Angela☆☆☆☆☆
Sooooo, I got to the shared epilogue for Polished and Wager and had to stop so I could beta read Wager as I didn't want to ruin the secret. Wager picks up after Woven and shows how the two couples progress their relationship to a full polyamorous relationship, acknowledging which members of the foursome are in love with one another, which are merely attracted to one another, and which are strictly friends with no chance for a sexual relationship (at least for now). It is not a smooth ride as there is a lot of communication required between characters who don't like to talk about their feelings and sexual attractions. Being as I still need to read Warped, I'm not sure how much of Devon's issues are a revelation or have been covered previously, but you won't be lost as long as you've read Good Girl and Woven. The pool scene will leave many readers wishing they could be Devon Mason, if just for a day, because those parents seriously needed that wake-up call. As this is a novella, I won’t expand upon this review anymore because I wouldn't want to spoil it for other readers. I will say that I loved the shared epilogue for Polished and Wager and was surprised at how well it worked for the two books. Why I was surprised, I don't know, because one of the reasons I enjoy Chilson's writing is that she seems to be able to pull off the impossible at times. I cannot wait for you to get your hands on this novella!

Full Disclosure – I'm a bit biased toward Chilson's work, especially the Rusty Knob series. After all, I did begin stalking the author on Facebook several years ago to find out when Good Girl would be released, managed to get in on its beta read, and haven't stopped pestering the author since.
