There are lots and lots of triggers in the book, and it’s not for the faint of heart. If you can handle the triggers, you will not be disappointed.

This book takes you through a myriad of emotions, from happy to sad, thoughtfulness to sadness, to violence and regret.

Each character that we meet is flawed in some way, and those flaws are described in such a way that the horror of their past is shown in a brutal way that explains those flaws.

This is an exciting start to a fabulous new series. I have to admit that I expected another formulaic biker series, so the complexity of the characters and their stories was a welcome surprise. This first book focuses on Reaper, the MC’s enforcer, and Anya, a bartender with secrets. Reaper and Anya’s story is a dark and gritty emotional ride, but it is also full of fast-paced action scenes.

Torpedo Ink is more than a motorcycle club. In this story, the power plays between MCs are familiar tropes, but the club members’ secret childhood in Russia and the special abilities of each member are pretty original. The backstory is ugly and gritty and there’s an intriguing hint of the supernatural that isn’t fully explained in this first book.

Some of the themes in this book are pretty dark and much of the emotional focus is on the repercussions of childhood trauma and abuse. The descriptions of physical and sexual abuse are graphic and unflinching. While some of the issues are resolved a little bit too easily, I really appreciated the honest look at the ways childhood abuse can impact men in their adult lives. Because of the issues, there probably isn’t quite as much sex as I’ve come to expect from biker romances, but there are some very erotic scenes and great chemistry between Reaper and Anya.

I think my favourite thing about this book is the strong women. There are two female members of Torpedo Ink and their unique skills are valued by the club. Anya is a strong character and she meets Reaper as an equal partner.
