Ravensong by TJ Klune

Gordo Livingstone never forgot the lessons carved into his skin. Hardened by the betrayal of a pack who left him behind, he sought solace in the garage in his tiny mountain town, vowing never again to involve himself in the affairs of wolves.

It should have been enough.

And it was, until the wolves came back, and with them, Mark Bennett. In the end, they faced the beast together as a pack… and won.

Now, a year later, Gordo has found himself once again the witch of the Bennett pack. Green Creek has settled after the death of Richard Collins, and Gordo constantly struggles to ignore Mark and the song that howls between them.

But time is running out. Something is coming. And this time, it’s crawling from within.

Some bonds, no matter how strong, were made to be broken.

Once again, I found myself completely and totally immersed in the story of the Green Creek wolves and their allies. There is something almost mesmerising about the writing in these stories. The prose is beautiful, the characters are wonderful, and at times I swear I could actually feel the magic that binds the Bennett pack together.

This second book belongs to Gordo, the pack witch, and Mark, Joe’s uncle. If Wolfsong tells the story of two boys growing into their adult selves, Ravensong tells the story of two men who have to come to terms with the events and people who shaped their younger selves. There is a long and complicated history between Mark and Gordo and an even uglier history between their families.

The plot is intricate and complicated. I found the first part slow, retelling Joe’s three-year absence from Gordo’s perspective as he accompanies Joe and his brothers on their quest. But once Gordo returns home, the story speeds up to an almost frantic pace. This story is full of action and at times the suspense is almost unbearable.

I loved seeing the Wolfsong characters from a new perspective. I understood the human pack members much better after reading this and I loved the insights into the pack’s history and Gordo’s personal past. I think it is the characters and the relationships between characters that make this series so special. Like Ox, Gordo is not a Bennett and I love the way he scrutinises the pack and pack relationships from his position on the periphery of the pack.

When TJ Klune was eight, he picked up a pen and paper and began to write his first story (which turned out to be his own sweeping epic version of the video game Super Metroid—he didn't think the game ended very well and wanted to offer his own take on it. He never heard back from the video game company, much to his chagrin). Now, two decades later, the cast of characters in his head have only gotten louder, wondering why he has to go to work as a claims examiner for an insurance company during the day when he could just stay home and write. He recently went slightly insane and moved to the East Coast from the Sonoran Desert with his fiancé and neurotic cat in tow. He dreams about one day standing at Stonehenge, just so he can say he did.

Jock is very good at his job. He's good at it because he can detach himself, and he has no personal attachments himself. When he takes on the job of protecting Fiona, he doesn't expect to feel so protective or attracted to her. It makes his job more difficult because he can't decide if a relationship with him is a good or bad idea. He knows that he's damaged, but he can't help but want more with Fiona.

Fiona has been on the run since she escaped a human trafficking ring. She knew they would find her – they kept finding her and forcing her to move on. When she finally is able to confront some of her past, she will gain her friend back and a whole force of protection. She is wary of Jock at first, but once she sees him and what is underneath his stern exterior, she can't help but fall for him.

This is a fast-paced story with a lot going on. There are characters who make second appearances, so I suggest that you read the previous book. I really enjoyed the way that Fiona is able to come out of her shell – she is a well-developed character and you get to see her flaws and insecurities. The growth that happens for both characters is well played out and I thought that it was a great story. I can't wait to see who gets the next book.

Megan Erickson is a USA Today bestselling author of romance that sizzles. Her books have a touch of nerd, a dash of humor, and always have a happily ever after. A former journalist, she switched to fiction when she decided she liked writing her own endings better.

Sarah☆☆☆☆☆
This is definitely the best book in the series so far. The third story mixes all the action of the first two books with the emotional depth and relationship magic I’ve loved in all my favourite Scarlett Cole books. It’s a powerful combination and I couldn’t put this book down.

Cabe is a brilliant main character. He’s a bit quieter and possibly a bit more abrasive than Six and Mac but there are many layers to the complicated man. I think his grief is handled well and I love the respect he has for Amy as a professional and a partner. FBI agent Amy is the first woman in this series whose skill set allows her to keep up with the former SEALs. She is smart and fierce, and I enjoyed the complexity of the decisions she has to make while undercover.

The relationship between Cabe and Amy is electric but also frustratingly slow at times. Cabe’s grief and their current undercover work makes personal moments difficult. In some ways, I think the constraints on the relationship make it more exciting and the trust that builds between Cabe and Amy as they work together is wonderfully intimate. These two work together on so many levels and I loved the chemistry between them.

Much of this story focuses on the casino where Amy and Cabe go undercover and I really enjoyed the change of setting and the new focus on money laundering, gangsters, and human trafficking. The plot is complicated and carefully constructed. This is an exciting, suspenseful read and I really loved it.

Cabe is a military man through and through. Just because he is now in a more private sector doesn't mean he can turn it off. Cabe's brothers have seen him through his worst times. When an unexpected loss occurs in his life, Cabe goes through the motions but doesn't really live.

Amy is starting over in a new town. After having to leave her previous position due to circumstances out of her control, she wants to prove herself and knows that there are missing women whom she can help. Working in the FBI is a dream job for her. She has her own trauma in her past that helped her decide that the FBI was her goal.

When Amy and Cabe are thrown together on an op, it will take their smarts and attraction to new heights. Can Cabe put aside his past and really let Amy in and can Amy trust in a relationship?

The mystery aspect was okay. I thought that it could have been played out a little more. I think, for me, the resolution was too quick and tidy on both the mystery end and the relationship end. There was not a ton of heat, for me, between the characters – it was forced chemistry. This story had the potential to be super intriguing, but for me, it fell a little short.

Lee'Anne☆☆☆☆
I’m a big fan of a couple of Scarlett Cole’s other series, so when presented with the opportunity to read one from the Love Over Duty series I jumped at the chance. It’s very well written and is a fierce romance between two well developed characters, who I loved! I would say that though I’ve read this as a standalone, it wasn’t easy to follow the first few chapters as they reference previous books a lot.

Cabe Moss works for a security company that has been called in to work a joint case with the FBI at a casino outside Vegas. Amy Murray is the FBI agent who has been assigned the case, she’s relatively new to the area, as she’s just transferred from out East because of a sexual harassment issue. Now, she’s determined to prove herself with her first case. The attraction between Cabe and Amy is immediate – it actually begins the night before they’re professionally introduced to one another. Things are heated between them, but Amy isn’t willing to chance risking her reputation at her new office to pursue things. On the flip side, Cabe is battling demons from his past and isn’t in an emotional position to start things with Amy.

This is just an all-around fast-paced book, Amy jumps right in to working undercover at the casino to try to catch not only a money launderer but also help with a few missing persons cases. Cabe struggles to keep things professional, especially when it comes to allowing Amy’s handsy new boss to be within a close proximity to her. I enjoyed that the two don’t immediately jump into bed together – we get a lot of buildup and it keeps the book moving right along. I also enjoyed the glimpses of the other men on the security team that we get, their personalities shine through and I look forward to reading more from this series.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆☆
This is the third book in the series, and I highly recommend that you read them in order – we are following the lives of a group of friends and each book builds on the previous one with regards to underlying plots, and each romance continues in the next book. And I have to say, if you have not read any of them yet, then you are in for a real treat!

Scarlett Cole has a real talent for setting up a tense situation! I had to stop a few times and catch my breath, remind myself that it would all work out in the end, and read on. There are also a lot of twists and turns, and events which build on the previous books – luckily there are plenty of reminders and links which help the reader to keep up. I love the fast pace, the roles which the men take, and the teamwork which stretches across the different purposes of the mission.

Thanks to Six and Mac having been down the route already, they are wonderfully supportive and teasing of Cabe as he realises how important Amy really is to him. They are both damaged by their pasts, but recognise the importance of the future for them as a couple. In such an intense case, their moments of privacy are insufficient, but essential. There is some lovely humour too, which defuses the seriousness of their work roles – cake tasting and the other wedding preparation tasks that the alpha men take on for Six and Lou. Great fun!

This really is an excellent read, and I can't wait for another!

This is the second book in the series, and you really do need to have read the first book to understand all the dynamics at play. This is a book full of drama and complex twists and turns, as well as a lovely romance – all in all, a very good addition to the series. I am reviewing with the assumption that you have read the first book.

After the women supported Trina, she insists on travelling alone and we catch up with her in Venice, Italy. As she flies home, hoping to avoid meeting up with the FWC ladies, she goes via Miami, where she meets Wade. And that scene where they meet is just perfect – the timing, the humour, and the ignorance of his identity. It sets up a friendship which is a lovely feature of the relationship between these two.

The drama comes from Trina's dead husband's Russian father – and it is complicated, but reads well – and as the gang rally round, and Wade also stays to support her, she starts to think that maybe it is time to live again. The honest communication between her and Wade is really engaging and works really well at cementing their relationship, even in these difficult conditions.

Whilst this may concentrate on their relationship, it is a bigger story, and Avery in particular suffers from the Russian connection. I am hoping that she will get her happily ever after soon, but there weren't as many hints as I wanted!

Great read – just make sure you read them in order.

Why Him? by Rie Warren Blog Tour

If you believe in romance...

I don’t want to know his full name.
I don’t even want his phone number.
In fact, the only thing I want from Jude is the filthy hot sex the masterful hung stud delivers on a weekly basis.
He’s way too young for me... and much too good at fulfilling my every dirty desire.
He definitely isn’t supposed to show up one morning on my doorstep with an offer I can’t refuse.
Now he’s in my life on a daily basis, and I can’t shake him no matter how hard I try.

He’s absolutely unsuitable.
She’s everything he knew he wanted from the first moment he saw her.

A book full of filthy sex and beautiful tortured romance. Why Him? is a standalone novel with a tear-worthy HEA, no cheating, no cliffhangers, just all yes. Keep the fan handy, you’ll need it.

On my knees in front of Jude, I sucked his cock. I greedily serviced him. I loved it. His smell. His taste. The long thick stretch of his dick plunging in and out of my mouth.

It was seedy. Vulgar. Dirty. All the things I’d never been before, and it was... liberating.

I let my saliva swill all over his huge cock because I knew he liked it sloppy. But that was as far as my concessions went. This was my time.

“You look so hot, there on your knees, your face stuffed full of my cock.” His coarse words drifted down to me, and his hands—such big hands—cradled the sides of my head.

I moaned at his crude praise, but I wanted to make him unable to speak altogether. Unable to think of anything but coming down my throat.

Pulling off him, I let his cock snap up to his incredible abs. Then I licked all around the thick base, mouthing him, kissing him where his male scent was the strongest. His tight black curls tickled my nose, and I closed my eyes, inhaling deeply.

My hands caressed along his deep pelvic grooves then across to the rod of his flesh I anchored down so I could continue my wet kisses all over the thick slick shaft. When I reached the purplish cap, I hummed as I lapped another drop of preejaculate onto my thirsty tongue. Then I drove my head up and down, just slightly, taking more of his cock inside with each pass.

Jude’s body was phenomenal, the only blemish on his huge frame a long scar on one knee. I’d never had my hands on so many big smooth muscles. And the slight mat of black fur on his chest... well, there was just no way I’d ever mistake him for a boy again.

Jude was a man, all man.

And the most magnificent part of him? His cock. The thick cylinder of flesh was hefty, heavy, covered in a network of veins that pulsed angrily the more I sucked him. The broad head seeped more precum than I’d ever encountered, a tasty snack.

I giggled wetly, popping him out of my mouth.

“Somethin’ funny?”

I loved how he started drawling when he was extremely turned on. Loved how his beautiful blue eyes flashed darkly. Loved how his face became harsh in the low evening light of the room.

He levered his cock away from my mouth, but that was okay, I’d just go after his balls.

Which I did, pursing my lips around one meaty testicle while mumbling, “Nothing funny at all. I love your cock. Love your taste. Love your smell, Jude.”

A breath hissed between his teeth as I worshipped his full sac. The two orbs were heavy, virile with cum. I gave him a lustful wet ball bath, my head wedged between his brawny thighs. I stroked him at the same time, twisting my palm over the slick head every so often. That always made him flinch and twist and groan my name. What he thought was my name anyway. And at those times I wished I’d told him the truth just so I could hear his dirty praise directed at me, Cady.

“Goddammit, Catherine. Gotta fuck your face now. Lemme fuck your face.” His words swirled together in a rough combination.

I grew even hotter, slicker between my thighs, and my drool dribbled down to my swaying breasts.

I looked up at him and nodded.

3.5 stars of fun fantasy romance

This is a fun story, with the mysterious start, the unexpected meeting, and the mission to make it permanent. I enjoy Ms. Warren's style, which is usually no holds barred, with plenty of humour, super-hot encounters, and larger than life characters. In this book we also have the benefit of the children, who are perfect at adding the aww, as well as the giggles.

I think this is perfect escapism, especially for any single mum who needs a break from dirty laundry, school runs, and work pressures. Cady doesn't have it that hard, as she is clearly successful and can make ends meet, but meeting Jude leads to more than she ever, ever thought she could have, or even want!

I am looking forward to the next book in the series – apparently each is a standalone.

Shannan☆☆☆☆
Why Him? is the first book in the Mistaken Identities series.

Cady is just coming out of a divorce. She has custody of her three teenage boys, whose lives have been interrupted enough but she still has needs. What happens as a chance meeting at a bar turns into a regular Thursday night thing. There were no names exchanged, no personal details shared, just a night of passion.

When coach asks Jude to help out a friend who needs help watching her boys, he figures he has nothing better to do since he can't play football anymore after a career ending injury. When he gets to the house, he's surprised by who he finds. Can fate really be playing a part in his life?

Can Cady and Jude keep the attraction they have between them from her sons? Can she get over the fact that Jude is younger than her? Can Jude make her see she needs him in her life?

The story is definitely sex heavy in the beginning, but as you continue with the story you see why it was written that way. Cady and Jude are combustible when they get together and Jude has a swoon worthy moment or two that draws you in.

I enjoyed it and am interested in seeing where the rest of this series goes!

Sarah☆☆☆☆
3.5 stars

This is a book for exhausted single mums everywhere. True – it is a completely implausible fantasy read – but it does kinda tick off about a dozen mid-life fantasies in a single read. Anonymous hook-up with a hot younger man? Gorgeous manny who takes over domestic duties? Being pursued by a sexy professional sportsman? The relationship between Cady and Jude isn’t just a cliché – it is the embodiment of every working mother’s fanciful daydreams.

While this was a fun read and I’m sure it was never supposed to be taken too seriously, parts of it gave me reader whiplash. The story starts with a scene that can only be described as crazy explicit erotica – and then we get sex-free domestic drama for the next hundred pages. It is an odd mix and it doesn’t quite work. The first hook-up scene was a huge turnoff for me and if I hadn’t committed to reviewing this as an ARC, I might have given up on the book.

The charm in this book is Jude as an unbelievably perfect fantasy man. There are several laugh out loud moments as he worms his way into Cady’s affections by working as her manny. Cady’s kids are funny and Jude’s double life as a household name sportsman and child care provider is amusing. For me, Cady is a little bit too neurotic and a little bit too perfect to be endearing. If this book is everywoman’s fantasy, the successful lawyer with Amal Clooney’s body and wardrobe doesn’t really resonate as a character most women can easily relate to. In an otherwise fluffy read, Cady’s hang-ups about Jude’s age feel whiny and pointlessly angsty.

This is sugary sweet entertainment. I can relate to the fantasies and I fell hard for Jude. It’s a fantasy escape from the everyday and I enjoyed it.

Mary Jo☆☆☆
3.5 stars

I enjoyed the book, but Cady's constant issue with Jude's age got to be really old, really quick. She's a self-confident woman, knows what she wants and goes for it. Except she thinks that Jude, at 26, doesn't know what he wants.

Jude is patient as any saint. He has strong feelings for Cady and does his best to show her just how much she means to him. He adores Cady and her children, and Jude has demonstrated nothing but honor and integrity towards her and everyone else.

It was a nice evening read and the heat level is off the charts.

Hayden is the second book in the Four Sons series. The books should be read in the order they were written. including the Four Fathers books for the plot to make sense.

Hayden is the oldest brother. After Eric's death he is left with a billion-pound weight on his shoulders. Eric made it so he is still controlling what Hayden does with his future. He's been left with fifty-one percent of Four Fathers and to care for his youngest brother, Cam. Hayden has theories about his father and the past after finding information his mother left in the attic. Hayden's obsession over this information could cost him everything. Katie, Lucy's best friend, is someone he thought he could count on, thought she had his back. Until words he said couldn't be taken back. Will he continue to fit against what he now knows is the truth? Is Katie willing to stick around and fight for them?

Hayden, to me, was always the dark. unnerved brother. I was so happy to finally get his story and see things from his point of view. He and Eric were so similar it's understandable why they butted heads so much.

I can't wait to see what lies ahead for the most secret keeping brother, Brock.
