5 Sociopathic Mommy Issues Stars

I need to preface this with an apology, because I have zero idea how to write a coherent review due to avoiding spoilers.

Emma is broken, after a lifetime of doing as her mother bid. The daughter of a con-artist mother who would use her daughter to keep a man's interests after she landed him. The abuse created a strange codependency between Emma and her mother. Mom freshly married to a new mark, Emma is going to community college and camping out on a pullout sofa in her stepfather's home office.

In walks in Church... is Emma's stepbrother her saving grace or the catalyst to spiral out of control?

Church is silent, finding human beings unworthy of his voice. He's also struggling with a feeling of being a sociopath, thinking the fact that he acknowledges his lack of empathy means that he's not a sociopath after all. The man has his own set of mommy issues, after a lifetime of abuse and abandonment. Church is an enigma, one in which Emma is drawn to understand.

To be honest, and I'm skirting the plot, since I don't wish to create spoilers. Both Church and Emma are broken. Irreparably? Only time will tell.

By the end of the novel, I'm not sure who is the driver and who is the passenger. Are they good for each other? We all had that friend who made us do things we only fantasized about doing, never expecting to make it reality. When you bend to peer pressure, are you fully to blame? Or are you all to blame since it was your fantasy to begin with? That is Church and Emma... the fantasy belongs to Church, and Emma is the one saying it's okay to make it reality.

There's a reason you fight your demons, because to embrace them makes you a monster.

Driver and passenger, or partners? Is Emma unleashing the demons inside Church, turning them both into monsters?

There's a balance and symmetry between the pair that is inexplicably a draw for the reader. I started the novel and read it in a singular sitting, needing to see if the train would derail or completely wreck everything in its path.

Definitely some twisty, curvy turns along the way that I didn't see coming, which had me feverishly reading. By the end of the novel, especially with the teaser chapter, readers will wish it was October already, wanting to get their hands on the next installment.

Unusually I had to wait a few days before writing this review – as I needed to let my mind settle, or at least give it a chance!

This is dark, but in a psychological sense, rather than a sexual one. The power that is wielded is partially successful due to sexual issues in the past but is not really erotic. It is unnerving, intense, and destructive.

I am hoping that the second book will give us more, although I am not sure how much more I can take... the twists and turns are not little plot devices, but great big sledgehammer-laden scary moves. And whilst love (as they define it) may be at the core of one protagonist’s actions, it is the furthest from the mind of the other... until maybe it isn't.

Add in the very beige Jerry and his wife, Emma's conniving mother, and the future isn't looking all that rosy – but what kind of rosy is all down to book two.

To describe how I feel about this book, I think I would say that I found myself asking how this would ever earn its designation as a romance, and really wanting to find out.

I am honestly having a hard time finding the words to describe my feelings of this book! This story drew me in, and didn't let go until... well, it hasn't let go. I am anxiously anticipating book two. This was a psychologically thrilling ride from the get-go.

What happens when two damaged people find solace in one another? Certainly NOT what you may be thinking right now.

"No one loves you more than when they're afraid of you. When they're looking at you because you hold their life in your hands. You become their whole world. You become their god."

Emma has never had an easy life. She's always been a pawn in her mother's never-ending parade of filth and abuse. This type of upbringing guarantees she will NEVER be normal. Who needs normal when you have Church?

Church is an enigma. Silent, scary, sexy... socially awkward, or is he?

I'm not willing to spoil any part of this story. This has it all: suspense, anger and hatred, the deep longing... obsession. So many dark emotions while trying to find the light, and it all works together to create an amazing story! I need to know what happens next.

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since... forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball – I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair – both a curse and a blessing – and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

“Babe.” His dark eyes sway to my mouth, and during the brief pause of silence, my hormones dare my fingers to reach out and touch him. “We passed professional a few minutes ago when I heard about your secret pole dancing stunt, not to mention, seeing your intimate apparel. I’m sorry.” He shakes his head with a low tsk-tsk. “There’s just no going back from that, Jaylyn.”

“You must try.” I clutch the gown to my chest, loathing the way my name sounds spoken in his low, raspy distinctive voice… loathing the way I want to hear him whisper it in my ear while he’s…

“Not gonna happen.” He taps my thigh as though it’s been settled. “Now, you need a ride home, and I’m here, willing, and able.”

“I don’t want a ride home from you!” I don’t want anything from him, nor do I want to be alone with him. I don’t want him at my apartment, the very place where I need to go to put some clothes on. I need clothes. I need my yoga pants and a tee shirt—a stained, already worked out in, smelly, offensive tee shirt. The getup I have on, the way Steele Kane’s looking at me… God, I haven’t felt this sexy since…

“No, maybe not, but the way I see it, what you want really doesn’t matter right now, does it? Or would you rather stay here for the night?” His head tilts back, and a wolfish grin strikes his mouth as though he already knows the answer. “Don’t worry, I won’t hold this naughty little stunt against you. I like to play dirty, but I’d never resort to blackmail, extortion, or using force. At least, not the unwanted kind to get what I want.” He winks.

“And what exactly do you want?” I sit up straight, ignoring the sexy little twitch of his left eye.

“Only to get you safely home.”

I glare at him, tightening the gown around me. “And that’s it?”

“Yes, Miss Rigsby, that is it.”

Reviews by the Wicked Reads Review Team

Steele Kane is a professional stuntman and has been for years. When his latest movie has an insurance agent going over every one of his stunts to determine if they are too dangerous or not. Because if they are, then the insurance company has to pay out. While Steele sees the woman as the person to stop his most daring stunts, he also sees the strong, kind of stand-offish woman that pulls at him in every way. He wants to get to know her better but she is determined to do her job and get as far from him as she can.

Jaylyn Rigsby only wants to do her job and get out of California quick. She doesn't want to spend any time with Steele Kane because he is bad for her female hormones. She seems to be drawn to him in more ways than one. But she has to be strong, do her job, and leave. But when Steels keeps wearing her down, she gives in and asks, "Are you sure I won't fall in love with you?" Oh yeah, she is in trouble.

Can Steele and Jay get over the past and have a future together? Will she be able to be with him if he continues to be a stuntman and her the insurance agent? What happens if her gets hurt, will she be able to cope?

I am loving these brothers, and this is my favorite so far. While Steele keeps saying he can't be loved, you just know that he will fall the hardest. The pain both Steele and Jay went through in their past will have you feeling it off the pages. If you love a great story and the love of many brothers, then you need to start this series, this is only book two and I can't wait for book three to see what happens with Crash.

Hot & Heavy by Tracy Wolff

When a daredevil football stud tries to get into your yoga pants, you know class is about to get interesting. The New York Times bestselling author of Down & Dirty returns with Hot & Heavy.

Although I come from a long line of free-spirited yoga teachers, sometimes I wish my life could be just a little more normal. More ordinary. More boring. Easier said than done, especially since it’s on me to keep my family’s studio up and running every time my mother wanders off to find herself. But that’s when my best friend sends me a sexy new student: Shawn Wilson, a slick wide receiver with a death wish and a chip on his broad, muscular, irresistible... wait, what were we talking about again?

They say I’m an adrenaline junkie. The truth is, I only really feel alive when I’m risking my life: Snowboarding, parachuting, BASE jumping... the kind of fun team management considers breach of contract. When my coach orders me to take yoga to “center myself,” I’m pissed—until I get an eyeful of delectable, flexible Sage Kaufmann. Unfortunately, she’s determined to keep things between us strictly business. But if Sage can get me to enjoy downward dog, maybe I can convince her that scorching hot sex could be the perfect shot of adrenaline.

Reviews by the Wicked Reads Review Team

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
I enjoyed this book. One yoga teacher, who knows nothing about sports, hooks up a star football player and then leaves him without a backward glance.

Sage doesn't take chances. She doesn't hook up with random guys. And she most certainly doesn't get it on with random guys in the back of club. When she does all three in one night, is it any wonder that she practically runs from the bar and back to her safe little world?

Shawn loves taking chances. The adrenaline rush takes him to places that he can't find normally. And at the height of it, he feels closer to the mom and sister he lost when he was a child. When he takes a chance and follows the woman he's been eyeing in the bar all evening to the back, he can't believe how right it feels to be with her. When she leaves him without a backward glance? He's not sure how he feels about that.

Sage's encounter with Shawn is quickly forgotten when she realizes her flighty mother has once again left her holding the bag. Everything she's done since she turned eighteen is with the goal of being safe and secure. She had enough of living like a gypsy when she was growing up and she never wants to be homeless or hungry again.

Shawn comes back into her life at the right time – she desperately needs help and he needs someone to help with his back problem. Low-key help. Reluctant to spend more time with him, she names an outrageous price and is stunned when he agrees to pay it for her to help him.

The relationship quickly turns from all business to pure pleasure. Sage can't believe she's dating a professional athlete, one that could easily date anyone he wants. Shawn thinks that Sage hung the moon.

A lack of communication between Sage and Shawn derails their fledgling relationship. Shawn has to learn to take others’ feelings into consideration and learn to talk about the demons that haunt him. Sage's childhood issues play a huge part in her reluctance to enter into a relationship and to trust people.

I wish that the author would have explored Sage's relationship with her mother more. I really think that there is a lot going on that would have helped the reader really understand Sage and her trust issues.

Sage is at a bachelorette party and would rather be anywhere else, until she sees the most beautiful man she has ever seen sitting at the bar. When they make eye contact, Sage thinks that she is out of his league and tries to stop looking in his direction. But it is hard to do. When he sends over a round of drinks for the group, Sage thinks that he is making fun of her and it really makes her sad and she runs for the bathroom but before she reaches the bathroom, a strong hand grabs her. It turns out to be the sexy guy from the bar.

Shawn is the football player that most every woman knows who he is, except for Sage. She has no idea who he is. While Shawn thinks that he has given her all the signs for her to make the next move, the sexy girl at the bar just isn't taking the hints. When she runs towards the bathroom after he sends a round of drinks, he has to find out what is wrong. They get hot and heavy in the alcove in the hall and when it is all over, Shawn wants her number so he can take her out to dinner and she refuses.

While Shawn is an adrenaline junkie, Sage is just the opposite. She doesn't think anyone should risk their lives just for the rush. But if she stops and thinks about it, her feelings are because of the way she was raised. And Shawn is chasing his demons from his past. When Shawn does something that scares Sage, will she be able to forgive him, or will she just walk away?

Can Shawn and Sage get past the fear and demons they both are running from? Will they be able to make a relationship work? Will the future be bright for them both? Can they both share their past with the other so that they will understand why they do and act the way they do?

I love this series and I think Shawn and Sage are my favorite couple so far. I can't wait to see who will be in book three. If you are looking for a new author or haven't read Tracy Wolff yet, start on this series, or any series for that matter. I love all her work and look forward to reading more from her.

I quite enjoyed this standalone read. Shawn and Sage are both likeable characters who are fighting off demons from their past while trying to live their day-to-day lives. Sage, after being dragged to a bar by friends, breaks her rule of only have two drinks and winds up having a quickie with Shawn outside the bathrooms at the bar. Knowing it can’t go anywhere, when Shawn asks for her number, Sage denies him and splits. Then when Shawn needs a yoga instructor to help with his football injury, his friends recommend Sage and the two wind up hot and heavy.

I loved the beginning of this book and the way that Shawn is down to earth instead of cocky like most athletes you read about. The ending felt rushed and I’d have liked more from their story, but hopefully we’ll see Shawn and Sage appearing in future Lightning books!

This is the second in the series, and does include elements from the first book, but would be a strong standalone too.

Both Sage and Shawn have been deeply affected by their pasts, and the chemistry between them threatens all the coping mechanisms that they have developed over the years. Sage is thinking about taking a risk, Shawn may have found a solution to his need to take them. This opposing reaction in the face of lust and impending love is an entertaining one to observe, and ties in well when the worlds that they inhabit collide.

I enjoy a good sports romance, and the therapy is often a part of the story, but rarely yoga, so it was fun to learn a little about the possible moves and help it could offer – and was amusing when Shawn realised that Sage really didn't know anything about him or his fame.

This is a fun new addition to the series; thank you, Tracy Wolff.

Camwolf by JL Merrow

A race to save his lover—by becoming his own worst nightmare.

Dr. Nick Sewell has it all. Good friends, a career as a Cambridge academic… and recently, a tendency to turn into a wolf every full moon. When a new student arrives from Germany, Nick is horrified by his visceral attraction to the troubled youth—not to mention his violent jealousy when he sees Julian with another man. He’s floored to find out Julian is a werewolf too.

Unlike Nick, Julian has spent his life among other wolves, and in this subject, he’s the teacher and Nick the student. Nick struggles to adjust to this reversal of roles, especially since he’s an alpha and Julian a natural submissive. That dynamic just adds to the attraction smoldering between them, whether they’re in human form or wolf.

But Julian’s pack and the abuse he suffered aren’t far behind him. And the pack wants to reclaim him. For Nick to hold on to his lover, he’ll have to come to terms with the violent acts of his past—and embrace the monster within.

Reviews by the Wicked Reads Review Team

I’ve only read a handful of werewolf stories and Camwolf offered me something a little different from the previous ones. Nick is a university professor, Julian one of the university’s students. Not only are Nick and Julian werewolves, they also have a romance with a large age gap and, to some extent a student/teacher romance, so there are plenty of issues for our couple.

I enjoyed the romance between Nick and Julian although at times their inability to communicate was a little frustrating. I wasn’t as emotionally involved with this couple as I would have liked. I’m not sure if this was because of the age gap or just because I needed to spend more time seeing the story from Julian’s point of view.

I did like the English setting of the story. I love the way the English are so polite and proper, but I did think there was far too much time dedicated to what various people were drinking. I also liked seeing Nick, who is a new werewolf, dealing with his animal side and trying to integrate this with his human life.

Overall, Camwolf is an enjoyable story. Three stars from me.

JL Merrow is that rare beast, an English person who refuses to drink tea. She read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, where she learned many things, chief amongst which was that she never wanted to see the inside of a lab ever again. Her one regret is that she never mastered the ability of punting one-handed whilst holding a glass of champagne.

She writes across genres, with a preference for contemporary gay romance and the paranormal, and is frequently accused of humour. Her novella Muscling Through was a 2013 EPIC Award finalist, and her novel Slam! won the 2013 Rainbow Award for Best LGBT Romantic Comedy. In the 2016 Rainbow Awards, her fourth Plumber’s Mate Mystery Blow Down came second in the Dorien Grey Award for Best Gay Mystery/Thriller, and was a runner-up for Best Gay Book, as was her historical romance To Love a Traitor.

You think you'd go far for love?

Think again.

She really knows how to push a man.

She finds the cracks and she goes right for them. She'll travel across the world just to break me apart, piece by piece, until every last secret is exposed and every weakness revealed.

I swear to God, I love her so much I'll let her do it.

I'll let her do anything.

But when she hurts herself to protect me?

That's a line in the sand.

Author’s Note: Broken Edge is the third book of four, with a prequel titled Cutting Edge.
It's an epic, intense, love story with some dark elements that could freak out some readers. I encourage you to read the reviews carefully in order to determine if this book is for you.

Book three and another cliffhanger!! ARGH! So annoying and exciting! I found this book riveting and again, the flow is so quick I was done in what felt like minutes!

So, book three, somehow Caden ends up back in active service after signing up for the reserves. Which he only did to become part of Blackthorn’s PTSD test subjects to receive top secret treatment. Caden is just a broken-in-half mess. His personalities have completely split, and he needs to suppress the frightened part of himself to be able to do his job in the red zone in Balad.

Greyson is a mess too, as she knows Caden is vulnerable. He needs her so she can help him by keeping his personalities in check. These two characters are so in love that at times my heart hurts reading their plights and pitfalls. I buy every line from them and truly feel their passion, their love, and their need for each other. I also feel Greyson's anxiety and aggravation, this is NOT the man she married, yet at times, it is. Greyson gets herself assigned to Blackthorn's Red Zone assignments to be there for Caden. They're both back in the military, overseas, and right in the line of enemy fire!

I've never really read a book in the midst of war before and I think Reiss did a fabulous job building this world. I can hear the helicopters overhead, imagining I can tell which are medical Blackhawks just like Greyson, and I can hear the chants of the prayers and the bombs in my head. I think this series is spectacular and while I hate a cliffhanger as much as the next person, I really didn't expect the turn this ending took! So, I'm impatiently waiting for #4!!

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

“You have a customer. First booth.” Grace tipped her head toward the front of the restaurant. “And he’s a cute one. Single, too,” Grace said with a wink.

“So this is what small-town living is like? You know everyone?”

She nodded. “And everyone gets to know you. Now shoo.” She waggled her fingers, indicating Juliette should head up front and serve her customer.

She put a smile on her face and strode toward the first table, stopping short when she came upon him.

He had thick, brown wavy hair, with a strong jaw and hazel eyes, and Grace hadn’t done him justice calling him cute. He was downright gorgeous. A navy tee shirt accented his muscular frame. He had to work out, given the flex and pull of his biceps as he picked up a glass of water and took a long sip.

The men she knew in New York were flimsy compared to this hunky specimen. They wore suits their bodies didn’t fill out and had weak facial profiles. This guy was everything she didn’t know to want, but she was certain he’d be in her dreams from now on.

She swallowed hard and approached, gripping the coffeepot in her hand. “Good morning.”

He looked up and his eyes locked on hers. His mossy-green-brown gaze bored into hers and held on so long the stare felt like a warm caress.

“Good morning to you, pretty lady.”

At his gruff words, a warm flush rose to her cheeks. “Coffee?” she asked, lifting the carafe, her hand suddenly trembling.

“Sure. Thank you.”

She somehow managed to pour the liquid without spilling, but she filled the coffee too high and it seeped over the top, leaking first on the table and then onto his lap.

He jerked as the hot liquid hit his pants.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” She put the carafe down with a clatter, picked up the nearest napkin, and began blotting his shirt and his lap, pressing down to soak up the liquid, only to come into contact with his hard, thick– “Oh!” She yanked her hand back, further mortified.

“You could keep going,” he said, eyes twinkling with laughter.

She wanted to crawl beneath the nearest table and stay there. “I’m so sorry. Did it burn you?” she asked, her cheeks flaming.

“No. It must have been cooler than you realized. I’m fine. Really.”

“Is everything okay over here?” Grace asked, walking over, obviously concerned.

Juliette stepped up, taking responsibility. “I–“

“Just a little accident,” the man said. “It’s no big deal.”

A customer called Grace’s name and she walked away, the incident forgotten. Juliette wished she could put it behind her as easily.

“How about we introduce ourselves, considering you had your hand on my–“

“Juliette,” she said quickly, before he could finish his sentence. “Juliette Collins.”

“Braden Clark,” he said with a knowing grin that made her weak in the knees.

The man’s impact was potent.

“Nice to meet you, Juliette.”

“Same,” she murmured. “Now can I get you a fresh cup of coffee?”

“That would be great.”

She gently picked up the overflowed cup and headed for the kitchen, returning to him with an empty mug and a towel to clean the table. A few careful minutes of serving later, he had his coffee and she was back to her duties, feeling his gaze on her as she worked. His name is Braden Clark and he’s a regular.”

Juliette picked up the coffee carafe. “I’ve got it.”

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
Juliette's lived a life of privilege, never knowing that her birth mother was alive. When she finds out the truth – and that she has two sisters – she leaves the luxury apartment she lives in with her father to find part of her that's been missing.

Juliette wants to know her sisters but at the same time is scared of what she will find. When she meets Braden, a local private detective, she senses that he could be a good friend. What she doesn't realize is that Braden has been hired by her father to watch out for her while she's in Rosewood Bay and make reports on what she's doing.

Braden likes being with Juliette. There's a realness about her that calls to him. And when Juliette makes friends with his father (who's suffering from Alzheimer's) it seals the deal for him on the kind of person she really is. Feeling guilty about the fact he's been working for her father, he vows to come clean.

I enjoyed this story, the resolution of mystery surrounding Juliette. I wish that there had been more interaction between all three sisters and with their aunt.

This is the third book in the series, and I would suggest that you really need to read the books in order. We know some of Juliette's early life from Phoebe and Halley's stories, and we know that they are very keen to find her too – that is, I think quite important, as it makes their attitude towards her arrival much easier to understand.

Obviously we know from the start the difficult position that Braden finds himself in, and it was easy to commiserate with him, as he struggled with how to explain everything. Carly Phillips is very good at ramping up the tension and finding the perfect way to resolve it. Halley is the right sister to give the right advice, although I think that their aunt would have been a good person to speak to as well. I wish we had had more of her in this book, as she would have understood Juliette's upbringing well, and been supportive.

The other interesting character to consider is Juliette's father. His behaviour towards Juliette is initially overprotective, but seemingly caring, but by the end, we really do have to question his sanity. I found this rather ironic, and sad in the light of Braden's father's condition. Lots to think about there.

Clearly the chemistry between Braden and Juliette is off the charts, and it is really fun reading about them ticking off her wish list, in the most sensual of ways. I look forward to reading more about them in future installments – because thankfully, just because the sisters are reunited does not mean that there are not other people worthy of love in Rosewood Bay!
