Mr. April by Bailey Bradford

Will is certain there’s truth to the phrase that no good deed goes unpunished.

William Blunt thought posing for a charity calendar would be fun. Instead, it’s kind of tedious and stressful, and his boyfriend begins to display some alarmingly jealous behavior. Once the shoot is over—again—he’s ready to move on to other things, one of which is, eventually, a healthier relationship.

Breaking up isn’t hard to do, and Will vows to learn from his past dating disasters. What he doesn’t count on is meeting a man whose smile turns his world upside down. Baz is gorgeous, but more than that, he’s intriguing and funny, and he seems to be as interested in Will as Will is in him.

But all is not smooth sailing, and a murder complicates the personal issues both men are already struggling with.

Will is finally done with the calendar – thankfully. It took much longer than anticipated, but also showed Will how a true relationship, a healthy relationship, should look. He has had it with his over-possessive, paranoid boyfriend. When push comes to shove, Will shoves without mercy. He's done.

On a whim, he goes out and meets Baz. Baz is flirty, funny, and sexy. He also has a great personality and knows that sometimes, even without looking, you can find your true love. However, Baz also knows what love can do – he lost his mom to love.

Overall, this was a sweet story with a twist in the mystery of why all of the men who have participated in the calendar have not great luck in love. While the characters do shift into their animals, I wouldn't necessarily qualify this story as a shifter story. It was a quick, easy read.

This the fourth book in the series, and it would definitely help the reader to have read the previous books. I have to admit that even though I have, the shifter element surprised me again.

Will, having completed his model duties for the calendar, finds that he may have found a new love, but having just been burned, and after the other disasters which befell the calendar crew, he is skeptical. Baz is excited at meeting Will, but also concerned given he is a swan shifter and they tend to fall in love only once.

They are a fun couple though, and I enjoyed their romancing of each other, even if it is unconventional. I did, however, find the dramatic twist a little strange, even if it got us to where the story needed to be.

The romance between Baz and Will is very sweet in this story. But the rest of the book left me a little bewildered with a few too many WTF moments.

I kinda like the idea of swan shifters but there is very little world building or explanation of the shifter elements of this story. A murder investigation pops up near the end and thoroughly complicates the book. And the characters: the ex-boyfriend, the neighbour, the uncle, the lonely colleague… Too many characters are introduced before either changing dramatically or dominating a couple of scenes before disappearing.

Because there is so much going on, there is little room for character development. Even Baz and Will feel like sketches and minor characters like ex-boyfriend Geoffrey remain cliché types.

There is some heat between Baz and Will and the book probably does work better as erotica than it does as romance. But again, there is too much going on in the story and even the erotic scenes could be developed further.
