Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
The relationship between Corey and Daniel is as uncomfortable as it is moving. Ugly secrets come to light when Corey begins to look into the deaths of three family members. The only person who can give him the full truth is Daniel, a man who has no desire to revisit the horrors of his childhood.
The initial interactions between Daniel and Corey are painfully awkward. Corey is tormented by guilt and shame. Daniel is fighting to deal with his past while struggling to manage his present. The relationship that tentatively builds between them has to bridge the men’s very separate life experiences. Corey’s first attempts to reach out to Daniel are painfully clumsy and I enjoyed the careful scrutiny of Corey’s privilege and good intentions. But his privilege is balanced by his grief and the responsibilities he has to assume after his parents’ death. I loved the slow, gentle, and reflective connection that builds between Corey and Daniel and I love the sense of belonging Daniel finds in the ranch.
This is probably the most difficult of the Legacy Ranch books. In an attempt to understand his family better, Corey digs deep into the abuse experienced by the young men. As a result, the horrors experienced by Daniel and the others feel closer and more graphic here than in the earlier books. As always, the author’s approach is sensitive rather than sensational but the book explores dark issues and needs to be accompanied by trigger warnings.

This is the third book in the series and after the first ten pages, I could only ever have awarded it five stars. It is not often that worry, sadness, and dread for a person can be conveyed in such a short few pages. It sets up the rest of the book, even if loyal readers already know exactly what happened, it is no less moving.
We then skip forward to the present day, but never do the events of those first few pages leave one's mind – and although relieved that Daniel is alive, and seemingly healthy, it will all come back to affect us again. The description of how Daniel copes with daily life, from the fear of even taking a sip of water is humbling, and was a salutary reminder no one should judge someone before walking in their shoes.
I am loathed to reveal any more because it will be all the richer if you read it directly. But rest assured this is both a moving, intense, and very uplifting story, as well as being a beautifully romantic read. Corey is a man with a strong moral code, living the legacy of his parents, and doing the best he can in a difficult situation. He too finds the support he needs from the Legacy family, and deserves happiness too.
Thank you, R.J. Scott, for a riveting, emotional, and hopeful story; you did Daniel justice.
