This is the first book in a new series, and I am already counting down to September, when the next book is going to be released. Whilst this one doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger, it certainly makes you want to read on about the engaging characters we have met.

This is a clever combination of a crime, an unsolved mystery, and a strong attraction between the two leading characters. They are an unlikely pair, and when they may need to describe their meet, they may not use the word cute – but the circumstances are definitely memorable. They both have reason to be cautious about commitment, but fate has other ideas!

Maddie is a person who has had to change her whole life in order to step up and care for her recently widowed aunt, who has early stage dementia. Her return to the town where she grew up holds difficult memories, but she is repaying the care given to her by her aunt and uncle. We know very early on that she is a worker, she may not be able to find another librarian role, but work she must – which is how she finds herself giving an Uber ride to a man who is then murdered.

Whilst new in town detective, Noah is very dubious that Maddie could have done the deed, she is his only lead. And so the scene is set for a very entertaining, ill-timed attraction, one which they both find they cannot avoid, in spite of the complications. I think that the crime element of this book is done well, not too graphic, not too simplistic. Evidence is peeled away, giving insights into Maddie of what she missed seeing as a youngster, and Noah the realisation that this may be a small town but there is still a need for his services.

I am absolutely ready for the follow up book, not that I am trying to wish the summer away or anything!

3.5 stars of fun and intrigue in small town America

This is a fun story engaging all the senses, with plenty of description of tasty food and aromatic coffee drinks. Lila is an entertaining lead, with a large cast of friends and family, all working together to save Tita Rosie's restaurant and to right the wrongs in their town.

I enjoyed her visiting the other local eateries and uncovering the reasons behind the recent spate of fines and poor inspection results. Cultural differences are used to make some interesting observations on modern life and add extra richness in the book. At the same time, Lila is a woman getting over a relationship and returning home to help out, little does she realise how she will be drawn back into her hometown and find herself again.

I will definitely be looking out for the next installment.

“Here.” Cletus suddenly appeared, looking devilishly handsome in the dim light and seemingly all put back together—like we’d been in here holding hands instead of... ANYWAY.

He held out my underwear. His eyes were bright even in shadow, and I could see they were half-lidded as they lazily trailed over me. He looked at me like he was hungry, and I was dinner. Despite all the encore orgasms I’d just had, the effect hit me right between my legs.

I wondered what he was thinking, watching as he licked his bottom lip and drew it into his mouth. Was he just as insatiable for me? And if so, was he okay with that?

Tearing my eyes away, I pulled on the lace and fixed my skirt, telling my body to settle down. We were getting married for hootenanny’s sake!

Cletus cocked his head to the side while I smoothed my hands down the red fabric, working to get a hold of all this raging want always coursing through my veins whenever he was near. Maybe it was because he was my first, and I guess, my only. Was that why I felt so crazed for him all the time?

“Miraculous,” he said.

I surmised he meant the dress. “Right? The wrinkles are hidden, if there are any. It’s ‘cause they ruched the outer fabric at the seams, see?” I turned to the side to show him the seam, and he stepped forward as though he were going to investigate.

Instead, his hands cupped my face and tilted my chin back. He stared at me with a vibrant intensity I felt all the way to my fingertips. “No, Jenn. Not the dress. You.” Cletus gave me a soft kiss, ending it by gently nipping my bottom lip. “You are my miracle.”

I sighed. And I smiled. And I felt like I was walking on a cloud instead of in four-inch heels, which was also probably something of a miracle. “You say the sweetest things.”

“I think you mean, I say the truest things.”

I laughed, and he kissed my forehead. He held me there, in the dark with his lips pressed to my forehead. “I love you so completely, with every cell in my body. I wonder sometimes if I’d cease to exist—just evaporate or disappear—if anything ever happened to you.”

“No.” I anchored my hands to his wrists and squeezed. “Don’t think like that. We’ve got our whole lives in front of us. There’s nothing anyone can—”

Three bangs in quick succession pierced the quiet moment, and not a second later Cletus had me on the ground beneath him, covering my back with his body.

“Gunshots,” he whispered in my ear. “From the parking lot. Don’t move.”

Cletus’ reaction to his own engagement party had me grinning. Cletus left the organisation of the party to Jenn, Jenn’s mum, and his sister, Ash, and didn’t get the party he was expecting. Cletus is all about making Jenn happy and there is an amazing scene where he describes what Jenn is to him and means to him and it totally melted my heart.

Unfortunately for Jenn and Cletus, their engagement party is interrupted with a murder and Cletus, Jenn, and Jenn’s mother are among the suspects. Cletus is usually the guy who knows everything that is going on, but he is out of the loop as his priority is taking care of Jenn and we see Cletus flustered and not as on top of his game as usual.

On the way to solving the murder, a secret relationship is revealed, an unexpected arrest, blackmail, a kidnapping, and more. There is also a beautiful and sometimes very hot romance with Cletus and Jenn, who are so in sync with each other, they are just perfect. I love them.

We also get to spend time with the members of the Winston family who we already know and love. It isn’t all murder and mayhem. There is plenty of love and family mixed in with the murder mystery.

There is never a dull moment in Marriage and Murder. It was a fun mystery and such a wonderful romance between two soulmates which totally melted my heart. I cannot wait to read the next book and spend more time with Cletus and Jenn and see what trouble they end up in next. A solid four stars from me.

This is the fifth book in the series, although I must admit it is my first. I shall be adding the others to my to-be-read list though, as I found this to be a good read. The highlight, which was completely unexpected, was the revelation of what the headings to each chapter turned out to be – genius, and beautifully written.

Set in the wild and beautiful countryside of Yorkshire, bringing a vision of a rural community who have outsiders visiting for shooting grouse. There is the usual haves and have-nots split, exemplified by their behaviour in the local pub. An unhappy calm, shattered by the murder of the local landed gentry, which starts unravelling the status quo. The author does a good job of highlighting the social dynamics of country and town, and uses the visiting police to emphasise the disconnects.

I will have to go back and catch more of the ongoing plot lines – like Steph and Andy, and Jim and his ex-wife, and new partner – but it did not affect this story at all.

Find yourself a quiet corner and enjoy this entertaining read.

“Don’t stop.” She reached for my belt again, this time completely undoing it, the button of my pants, and my zipper at world-record speed.

Her phone buzzed. Then it chimed. Then it buzzed and chimed two more times. Then it rang again. Reba.

Cursing, Jenn pulled the phone from her pocket, once again her face illuminated, murderous rage in her eyes. Her finger moved to the power off button. She blinked, hesitating. Her eyes widened, her body stiffened, and she gasped.

“Cletus!”

Something about her tone, like she was horrified, and maybe a little afraid, cut through the heavy haze of lust inertia, and my hands stilled. Shaking myself, it took me a few moments to realize she was showing me the phone screen, and another few to bring the content of the text messages into focus.

Momma: Jennifer Anne Sylvester, pick up your phone. If you’re with Cletus, I need his help. Please.
Momma: ALL THE CHICKENS AND ROOSTERS ARE DEAD! PICK UP YOUR DAMN PHONE!
Momma: I’m calling you in a second, pick up the phone. Mr. Badcock’s chickens are dead. All of them. I got here and he’s running around, deranged, yelling about his dead chickens! I called the police and they’re on their way. Please, please, please pick up the phone!

At some point, I must’ve taken the phone from Jenn and stepped away, because I glanced up upon reading the messages for the third time, finding the phone in my hand and Jenn fixing her skirt.

“This is nuts.” Her big eyes searched mine imploringly. “Who could have done this?”

I shook my head, having not yet managed to fully shift head gears—you know, from that head to the one on my neck—and my gaze dropped to the wet patch on the front of her dress just visible in the swath of light. My erection throbbed.

So we’re... not having sex?

“Why? Why would they do it? And WHO?” She snatched her phone back, her tone bewildered, distracted, and distraught. She was distraught because of the dead chickens, like any normal person would be.

I was distraught also, but my distress had nothing to do with farm animals.

“We have to go.” Jenn grabbed my hand and began walking toward the direction of the hall. Meanwhile, it took me until her hand found the door handle to realize my zipper and belt were still undone.

“This is crazy.” She paused as I zipped up, her tone halting and distracted. “Poor Mr. Badcock. And those poor chickens.” A sound of distress escaped her throat. “This is terrible.”

It was terrible.

And I was going to hell.

Because all I could think was, Talk about a cock block.

Jenn is distraught when the farmer who supplies the eggs she uses in her mother’s bakery, refuses to give her eggs. I was smiling and hooked from the very first scene. Jenn is a good, honest woman with a big heart. When Jenn finds out what has happened to the farmer’s chickens, Cletus steps in to help deal with the situation.

As more suppliers to the bakery suddenly won’t or can’t provide supplies, the mystery deepens. While all this is going on, Jenn and Cletus are dealing with relationship issues. They are engaged, but Jenn introduces Cletus as her boyfriend and he is yet to give her a ring. There were many entertaining scenes that had me grinning, including plucking chickens, a cow auction, a naked bottom, and a difficult future mother-in-law. But the emergency lasagna versus lasagna emergency was my favorite.

I loved the storyline and the fun mystery, but Cletus and Jenn are the stars of Engagement and Espionage. Quirky, lovable, and insanely clever, they are a formidable team and the kind of people you’d want to be friends with because life with them around would never be boring. I had a blast reading this story and I’m looking forward to more mysteries from this fabulous couple.

Murder doesn't care if you're a newlywed.

Detective Chief Inspector Robin Bright and Deputy Headteacher Adam Matthews have just tied the knot, and all they want to do is sink into blissful domesticity. Unfortunately, there’s no chance of that when a chilling murder at a rugby ground takes Robin miles away to help his old boss solve it.

Robin and Adam are newlyweds but don't get to enjoy their honeymoon period because Robin is called away to another town to investigate a murder. This leaves Adam and Campbell the dog at home. You would think it wouldn't be possible for Adam to get involved with another one of Robin's cases from a town away but of course he does, although not the extent he has in the past.

Our murder mystery involves the victim found dead in the clubhouse of a rugby club at the same time a player suffers a major injury. There is also the mystery of the hit run death of a player three years prior. We follow Robin through witness interviews, searches, and more interviews. We get to watch as each piece of the puzzle is uncovered and watch the police try to work out how it all fits together. I enjoyed trying to decide who was telling the truth and who was lying.

I loved spending time with Robin and Adam again, even if in this book they spent much of the time apart. I really like the cozy feeling of the English small towns full of interesting people, and seeing Adam and Robin make a life and home for themselves. A Carriage of Misjustice is another great mystery.

We return to Merrychurch a few months after book one finished and Jonathon and Mike have been dating for a few months. Their romance is coming along nicely but I love yous haven’t been exchanged yet. Jonathon hosts a bonfire and fireworks for the town, and we get to meet more members of the community only for one of them to turn up dead the next morning.

This story is delightful. Even though Mike and Jonathon have no business snooping around to uncover the murderer, everyone in town expects them to do it, even the local coppers. Some of the residents are even eager to pass information along. There are plenty of suspects and while I had my ideas on who did it, I was wrong.

This is such a fun mystery set in a quaint English village with an interesting bunch of characters. I liked the continuing romance between Mike and Jonathon and I even liked that the story faded to black when it was time for our couple to get between the sheets. It fit with the groove of the story. Roots of Evil was great, and I look forward to seeing what Jonathon and Mike get up to next.
