Road Out of Winter was a slow moving, yet interesting, dystopian novel.

Upon finishing this book, I was immediately disappointed and planned on rating this three stars. As I started to formulate my review, though, I had a really hard time coming up with the right words to convey my feelings.

Then I had to sit on it for a few days.

As of today, five days after finishing this book, I haven't been able to STOP thinking about it.

I will not recap this story, it truly needs to be experienced in its entirety for you to be able to appreciate it. I will say that the characters, Wil especially, grow on you, but I feel like they could've been more developed. As it stands, we know a lot of the heroine's past so we can understand her. I would've liked more Grayson. I don't really know what Danz brought to the story and feel like he was a distraction.

Overall, this story stuck with me, I'm still not sure how I feel about it but I can't forget it. I would say that is a trait of a good book! I don't need to enjoy everything I read, but I can appreciate when it does leave an impression.

Deal with the Devil is the first book in a new, awesome, dystopian series by Kit Rocha! I have never been disappointed with any books written by this author and am not going to start now. I will mention this book has an entirely different feel from the Beyond series or Gideon's Riders series – and that's good, but I just want to make sure you go into this informed.

After the Solar Flares, the US is a total wasteland mess. Big corporations have taken over different parts of the country; this book is based in Atlanta, where the Tech Corp runs the show.

We are introduced to two different teams of people, both teams have been bio-engineered in some way but have totally different backgrounds and stories. I love Nina and her team (Dani and Maya), they are good guys – truly good guys in this mess of a world. Whereas Knox and his team are bad guys turned good-ish. I won't give the story or characters away, as that's really the point of the book.

I liked the characters and want to learn more about these teams. I want to see what happens, and if the good guys truly win. I will say that the odds are stacked against them, which gives us an interesting story. I am invested in this world and need to see everyone (who deserves it) get their happy ending!

Cheryl Campbell is a new-to-me author

Echoes of War is the debut in the Echoes Trilogy.

I'm always looking for something a bit different that melds several genres together, a novel that I won't forget as soon as I start another. Dystopian meets Science Fiction.

Echoes of War was rich in detail, painting a fully envisioned world, without being laden with too much description. Earth has been overrun with aliens in this dystopian tale, Dani is one of the human survivors, doing all she can to stay that way. I was able to get a good grasp on the world building, without it being spoon-fed to me, nor was it lacking explanation.

Starting off with a bang, Echoes of War is action-packed and exciting, spanning a long period of time. Where I had difficulty is how the time seemed to jump forward, the characters felt different.

While the world building and war-torn environment were stellar, this was at the expense of the character development and relationship connections. There wasn't much growth for the characters, actions/reactions not jiving up to their maturing ages, sounding more young adult than adult, whereas young children sounded mature and logical in comparison.

I thoroughly enjoyed Echoes of War and look forward to continuing the trilogy. Recommended to those looking for something different, who are more interested in action and world building vs character building.

Cheryl Campbell was born in Louisiana and lived there and in Mississippi prior to moving to Maine. Her varied background includes art, herpetology, emergency department and critical care nursing, and computer systems. She lives in Maine and has won four awards through the New England Book Festival for her fantasy series. Echoes of War is her first science fiction novel and is the first volume of a trilogy.

This book picks up several years after The Doom with a snapshot of the lives of the people of New Hope. The lives of Rachel, Arlis, Jonah, Katie and the triplets, Chuck, Eddie, and Fred are just as integral to the survival of humankind as much as Fallon. The lives that they are building will set the stage for all future generations to come.

While New Hope is growing and conducting rescues of those who are enslaved by the Purity Warriors, Lana and Simon are raising Fallon and her younger brothers, Collin, Travis, and Ethan, on the farm. Their lives are simple, and they are teaching the children how to survive by farming. Fallon has grown up knowing that when the time came, she would be asked to leave her family and train in the ways of the Light, in the magics she was born with.

The trials that Fallon faces are not ones any normal teenager faces. The things she's being asked to learn are hard for those years older than she is, yet she manages. There are the typical teenage moments of sulkiness and feeling sorry for oneself and homesickness, yet Fallon isn't one to indulge in those feelings very often.

Duncan and Tonia's ability are just as they were previewed in Year One. They are strong apart, but together they appear to be unstoppable. Hannah is a natural born healer, not in the magical sense, but in that is what she is drawn to do.

The title of the book is mentioned several times throughout the book. Mallick talks about how Fallon is of the blood and bone.

The next installment in this series is a year away and it’s going to be a long wait.

I love this world that Kit Rocha has created, I'm a Broken Circle [Sector Four] junkie. I can NEVER get enough of life in the sectors: the struggles, the relationships, the politics – all of it's amazing!

On that note, lets discuss book three in the Gideon's Riders series.

Maricela Rios is the princess of Sector One, she's the youngest sibling in the Rios ("ruling") family. She's tired of being treated as a child but being considered royalty doesn't leave much opportunity for freedom. I was excited to read her story – I wanted to learn more about the family, and her place in it.

Ivan is the Rider assigned to protecting the princess, her full-time bodyguard. He takes his responsibilities very seriously and has good reason for it. Trying to make up for the mistakes of his family, he's in a tough position.

As I said above, I love this world and the romantic relationships that are built in it. The connection between Ivan and Maricela has been slowly building, with mentions in previous books. Unfortunately, I didn't feel the burning chemistry between them.

Ivan seemed rather one dimensional and I don't know if that's how he was intended or if it's just me. I did enjoy the glimpse into Sector One's family, and the struggles that accompany the elevated station of any Rios. I was hoping for more interactions between Maricela and her big brother, Gideon.

Overall, this was another good book in this Gideon's Riders series – it's just not my favorite.

Book three in the Riders spin-off series. Each Rider will have their story and I imagine we'll maybe end with Gideon? I sure hope so! Ivan is assigned to be Maricela Rios' bodyguard. She's the princess of Sector One and everyone wants to align their family to the Rios. Maricela is being pursued heavily by all the up and coming suitors but she's in love with just one man – Ivan.

Ivan is a Rider. Riders do not let themselves feel, think of the future other than protecting the prophet, least of all, fall in love. Things are changing in the sectors, but Ivan is trying to clean his name and his family's legacy. Letting his urges out on the princess of Sector One will not go over well.

There's a lot of sector politicking in this book. Pages of bartering and hierarchy plays to align with the prestigious with the Rios. I found it a little dry at times. We're warned the story is a slow burn of forbidden love but it's more of a smolder. I have to say that Ivan can turn up the heat on that fire when he's in the throes of passion, but otherwise I found him and Maricela slightly lacking. I'm not sure if he was set up well enough for me to care about him. I liked Maricela being able to have fun a bit and see the world with Ivan. Still, even for an installment I didn't love, Ivan was a good read.

I listened to the audio version of this book and the narration was great.

This book follows the lives of six people as they learn to survive in a post-pandemic world. Governments have fallen, infrastructures are fractured, and families are decimated by disease and corruption. Those that survived somehow had a natural immunity to the virus or a supernatural power in them that thrived in the aftermath.

It’s been a while since I've read one of Nora Roberts books that contain magical elements and this book did not disappoint. The story is a solid read, that gives you hints of what's to come, and then surprises you with more.

I don't want to wait a year for book two, but I have no choice.

If you're a fan of Sector 4, the O'Kanes, and Broken Circle – you NEED to read this!

We all know Dallas O'Kane and Lex are the perfect "ruling" couple, but have you ever wondered HOW they came together? What really happened?

This quick story is the prequel to the Sector 4 we all know and love. This is about a rise to the top, it's about the formative years of the King and his Queen. Not an easy love story, definitely not "neat & tidy" but instead messy and chaotic.

I absolutely loved this story – I've always wondered how they became such a powerful couple, I've always wanted to see their love story. Not to mention the sexy time – WHEW!

This is a great addition to the Beyond series!

Awesome short story about Declan (Dallas) and Lex! Their ups and downs over the years with the rise of Dallas as the bootlegger barbarian and the backstory to their relationship struggles and successes. I adore anything from this world, especially if it involves the King and Queen of Sector 4. Lex and Dallas burn up pages with their chemistry, every bit of their angst and longing was perfection and I devoured every bit. If you loved the Beyond series, it's a must read addition. If I wasn't on a tight schedule of books to read, I'd read it over again right now!

Book #2 in the Gideon's Riders series was everything I've come to expect with Kit Rocha! The first book was good, but this one is fantastic. Previous books have already set up the world in Sector One, and the Riders have all been mentioned, so Deacon's story was quick to start.

Deacon is the original Rider – he's the leader of the group (not including Gideon) and he knows his men. Being at the top, though, hasn't given him the chance to really allow the guys to get to know him or his past. When his past has come calling, though, it's time for Deacon to face the life he left behind. Will the Riders accept the man he was or will they trust the man he's become?

Ana (oh I LOVE thee) – she's the first and ONLY female Rider. She's strong and fierce, but still is insecure in her position. Trying to live up to her father's legacy, she always feels judged. When impossible expectations are placed in front of Ana, she just fights harder to prove herself.

Ana and Deacon are a total kickass couple, literally. I could feel their emotions – the frustration, the passion. I couldn't put this book down, I honestly read it all in one sitting, it has everything: action, adventure, romance, mystery, and not a single dull moment. Did I mention the erotic scenes were explosively hot? They were scorching!

I can't wait for Ivan's book.

Deacon was perfection. This spin-off of the Beyond series is based in Sector One, the temple where Gideon reigns and his Riders protect the masses. The Rider's pledge their lives to Gideon and his followers and will die willingly to protect all. This means no long-term relationships and no children for the Riders, leaving no one behind grieving when they reach saint status by dying for the cause. It's a lonely existence, but one that Ana, the very FIRST woman Rider, knew going in. She's trained her whole life for this chance, and emotion, especially love, would never be in the cards for her. Until she's falling for the man in charge, Deacon. These two characters had chemistry up the yin yang and the first steamy scene between the two was one of the best I've read in a long time! The buildup, the longing, and the forbidden aspect were absolutely beautifully executed! Ana was vulnerable but strong, smart, and quick on her feet. My perfect heroine! Enjoyed the story cover to cover!
