The Family You Make by Jill Shalvis

The Family You Make. A Sunrise Cove Novel.

Beloved New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis begins a new series—Sunrise Cove—set near beautiful Lake Tahoe, with a heartwarming story of found family and love.

During the snowstorm of the century Levi Cutler is stranded on a ski lift with a beautiful stranger named Jane. After strong winds hurl the gondola in front of them into the ground, Levi calls his parents to prepare them for the worst… but can’t bring himself to say goodbye. Instead, wanting to fulfill his mother’s lifelong wish, he impulsively tells her he’s happily settled and Jane is his girlfriend—right before his phone dies.

But Levi and Jane do not.

Now Levi’s family is desperate to meet “The One.” Though Jane agrees to be his pretend girlfriend for just one dinner, she’s nervous. After a traumatic childhood, Jane isn’t sure she knows how to be around a tight-knit family that cherishes one another. She’s terrified, and a little jealous. But an unexpected series of events and a host of new friends soon show Jane that perhaps this is the life she was always meant to have.

As Jane and Levi spend more time together, pretend feelings quickly turn into real ones. Now all Jane has to do is admit to herself she can’t live without the man she’s fallen in love with and the family she has always dreamed of.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the first book in a new series, and as I love everything I have read by this talented author, I am delighted to have a chance to read it.

We meet Levi and Jane in the most harrowing of situations, and whilst I knew it had to turn out okay, it was quite stressful. I am not a great fan of gondola ski lifts in good weather, so it was easy to imagine the imminent disaster.

Then the story unfolds about these two people who believe themselves to be misfits in the world, and a really delicious story of trying to get them to acknowledge the truth, rather than the fakeness of their relationship. Be ready for some truly funny moments, but also some very poignant ones. Some misunderstandings of youth being righted, and a genuine opportunity to lessen the burden on their shoulders and be happier, more fulfilled people.

As well as family helping them make their realisations, so do Levi's best friend, and Jane's landlady. As it happens, they also have feelings for each other which are subject to complications of their own. They do provide a great mirror to the couple and serve to stabilise and question their decisions. Of course I could not fail to mention Alley Cat, as her importance in creating a family cannot be denied.

Delicious, heartwarming read, and I can't wait for the next one!

I must say this book didn't grab me the way Jill Shalvis' books normally do. The premise of the book was one that I think we can all understand – who would be our last call and if we could, would be let them know that we found the one who made us happy? That's what Levi did, then he perpetuated the fib after the danger was over because he didn't want to see the disappointment in parents’ eyes again.

Levi, doesn't quite fit in with his family. They are boisterous and outgoing, and he can be a bit introverted. He needs the quiet in order to let his brain relax and calm itself, and his parents and sister never understood that. Nor did they understand why he always had his head in a book when he wasn't on the slopes. Like a square peg in a round hole, loved but didn't quite fit.

Jane knows all about being the square peg. Her own mother dropped her off at her grandparents when she was just a child and left to live her life. Being shuffled from one relative to the next left her with a sense of insecurity that has never faded. She knows that the only person she can depend on is herself and when it appears that she only has moments to live – well, no great loss.

This book had so much potential. Shalvis explored a lot of the reasons of why Levi moved away from Sunrise Cove but did little to really delve into Jane's backstory. Yes, the reader was given the high points, however, I would have liked to have known more about Jane's mother and if Jane had tried to make contact as an adult. Or been in therapy.

I will read book two as once I start a series, I find it hard to put it down.

Family becomes rivals—but love always wins. Release Blitz 28 – 30 January. Rivals by R.J. Scott & V.L. Locey. A Railers Novella.

Playing for their country in the Winter Olympics is the highest of all honors, but when family members are pitted as rivals and a dark specter from the past turns up in Beijing, tensions run high, and abruptly, it’s not all about the hockey.

Jared is torn—assistant coach for Team Canada, with Ryker on the team; he bleeds red and white and wears the maple leaf with pride. Only Ten is now a rival, and not only that, but the country they’re all playing in frowns on his marriage and keeps him and Ten apart. Jared wants to win gold for his country and his son, but he’d be so proud if Ten were to win. He’s confused and concerned, but when a face from their past turns up to play, he’s furious.

Being picked for Team USA is one of the things Tennant dreamed of when he was a little boy. All of his other aspirations have come true through hard work, determination, and pure talent. Now he’s about to represent his country in front of the world, and the pressure is starting to build. He’s also just come face-to-face with a hated rival from a dark period in his past. Add in the burden of squaring off against his husband and stepson, and Ten is feeling the pressure to be perfect.

Family becomes rivals—but love always wins.

Excerpt

I woke the following morning feeling as I’d been dragged through a sewer by my feet, face down in the muck, forehead bouncing off the slimy troughs filled with sludge.

Which was a typical morning after a massive headache. Add in jet lag and yeah, I was shit-faced and not in that fun been-partying-all-night-with-my-bros kind of way.

The room was dark, thank all the gods. The only sound was of someone nearby humming and strumming on an acoustic guitar. Sitting up was done in increments. There was a slight wave of nausea and a little dizziness, also typical of a postdrome. The plucking and soft singing stopped at my groan. Inhaling deeply to counter the stomach lurch, I breathed in lavender. It was… nice.

“Morning,” Colorado whispered from a vague point by the windows. In the corner. Maybe on the floor? Fuck. This was so not what I needed today. The aftereffects of a crashing headache usually lingered for a full day after the migraine itself, and left me feeling exhausted and mentally fogged. Just the place I wanted my head to be on the day of my arrival. Go me. Ugh. “I had some ginger tea sent up. My grandmother swears by it for any kind of headaches. Also, she said to rub some lavender into your pulse points so I kind of did that when you were sleeping. Nothing beyond your wrists though, my dude.”

“Oh, uhm…” I lifted my left wrist to my nose. Yep, the smell of lavender wafted from my skin. “Thanks.”

“Totally my pleasure.”

Moving like a geriatric patient, I eased my bare feet to the floor. Had I undressed before crawling under the covers yesterday?

“In case you’re wondering, I took off your shoes and socks, great sneakers by the way, and tucked you in.”

I blinked into the darkness, the memories of yesterday slowing arriving. “I threw up on you. Oh shit, Colorado, I am so sorry.”

This novella is the 11th book in the series – and I really love them all! This one is absolutely perfectly timed and combines a big message with a very personal one to the guys... inspired.

I love the Winter Olympics, and even though there may be some issues around the '22 games, I am sure to spend hours with the TV on in the next few weeks. And it will be extra fun to have in mind some of the behind-the-scenes machinations which this book brings to the fore.

So many threads are pulled together in this installment; possibly seeing Aarni being the most dramatic as it affects every player who had to deal with the incident, and obviously Ten most of all. Then there are the issues of loyalty to a person vs a country, being away from home, being in a closed society, let alone the desire to win a gold medal.

It is absolutely packed full of content, and still there are moments of calm and peace, and the love shines off the page between Jared and Ten... great read!

Veronica☆☆☆☆☆
Rivals is book 11 and the Harrisburg Railers series and we are taken back to our first couple, Ten and Jared. This series has spawned several spin-offs and you’d think after reading so many books written in the same universe things would be getting tired, but I found Rivals was the opposite – it was energising and it left me wanting more.

Jared and Ten are off to the Olympics in China, but they are on opposing teams – the USA and Canada. Jared is torn between wanting to see his son, Ryker, playing for Canada, win gold and also wanting to see his husband win. Ten is feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders, representing his country, representing LGBTQIA sports people, missing their daughter who was left behind in the USA, and even missing Jared as they are separated in opposing team camps.

So personally, there is a lot of pressure on Jared and Ten, but this is balanced with some really exciting hockey. As a reader from Australia who rarely watches hockey, I found the description of the matches easy to follow and I was on the edge of my seat during some of the matches. I was thrilled to get to see various characters that we’ve met and love throughout this series and its spin-offs including Stan, Tate, and Penn.

I had a fantastic time reading Rivals and I can’t thank the authors enough for continuing to show us what happily ever after actually looks like for Jared and Ten. Also, I’m now all keyed-up to watch the Olympic hockey, which starts in just a few weeks’ time. Rivals gets five very happy stars from me.

Last Seen Alive by Joanna Schaffhausen

Ellery has seen the monster behind the mask and she doesn’t believe he can be redeemed... Not after everything he’s done.

Last Seen Alive is the fifth book in Joanna Schaffhausen's heartpounding Ellery Hathaway mystery series.

Boston detective Ellery Hathaway met FBI agent Reed Markham when he pried open a serial killer’s closet to rescue her. Years on, their relationship remains defined by that moment and by Francis Coben’s horrific crimes. To free herself from Coben’s legacy, Ellery had to walk away from Reed, too. But Coben is not letting go so easily. He has an impossible proposition: Coben will finally give up the location of the remaining bodies, on one condition—Reed must bring him Ellery.

Now the families of the missing victims are crying out for justice that only Ellery can deliver. The media hungers for a sequel and Coben is their camera-ready star. He claims he is sorry and wants to make amends. But Ellery is the one living person who has seen the monster behind the mask and she doesn’t believe he can be redeemed. Not after everything he’s done. Not after what she’s been through. And certainly not after a fresh body turns up with Coben’s signature all over it.

Avid Reader☆☆☆☆
M/F Mystery

In the fifth installment in this series, you get to see Ellery back at it.

Since the last book, both Ellery and Reed have found different paths, but the cunning and sociopathic Coben is finding a way back into both their lives again.

Reed is still trying to keep Ellery safe and away from danger. He can't help it. It's in his blood. Despite knowing that Ellery can take care of herself, Reed can't help but feel that he's facilitated Coben coming back into her life.

Ellery is no shrinking violet. She wants to make sure that Coben sees that she's not broken. She beat him and is continuing on in her life. But the memories take over every once in a while.

As Reed and Ellery play Coben's cat and mouse game, you'll have to decide who the cat is and who the mouse is.

While you don't necessarily have to read these books in order, I highly suggest that you do. The relationship between Reed and Ellery is complicated and while I can understand their hesitance, it does sometime detract from the story. I wish that they would develop a different path, but it seems that they are destined for the path they were set on when Ellery was just a girl.

You won't be disappointed in this book. It has anxiety inducing scenes and when you face your fears, something unexpected always comes up.

Sarah☆☆☆☆
3.5 stars

This fifth book is probably the most exciting and the most disturbing book in the series. The initial premise still doesn’t quite work for me. Somehow the FBI approves and encourages a reality television show wanting to reunite a child survivor with the serial killer who tortured her. It leads to all sorts of drama for Ellery, but I found myself continually having to suspend my disbelief.

I did enjoy the tension and drama in this story. I’ve never been a huge fan of the slightly creepy relationship between Ellery and Reed, and I’ve been getting tired of the hot and cold nature of their relationship for a couple of books. Thankfully, this story introduces a whole new cast of characters to the series.

While this is an exciting, fast-paced action story, it isn’t the most carefully plotted psychological thriller. I loved the action sequences but found the twists either too predictable or entirely implausible. The story is littered with dead bodies and potential suspects. It’s a bloodbath that will appeal more to readers who enjoy a gory thriller than readers who want to untangle a psychological puzzle.

This feels like the end of the series, and I feel like I’m ready to leave the series here. Ellery has been a fascinating antihero and I’ve really enjoyed her journey.

His Fresh Start Cowboy by A.M. Arthur

Two cowboys will have to risk their hearts—again—to find a home on the ranch.

Two cowboys will have to risk their hearts—again—to find a home on the ranch.

Hugo Turner's boots haven't touched Texas soil in almost a decade, and he's not sure they should now. Being in the state is complicated, but Hugo can't resist going back for a job working with his teenage crush. His best friend's hot older brother is now the ranch's foreman, so he'll be Hugo's boss. Inappropriate? Probably. Will it stop Hugo? Probably not.

Brand Woods isn't ready for the return of Hugo Turner. He decided long ago to keep his bisexuality private and to focus his life on running the ranch. Working next to the most dangerously tempting man he’s ever known stirs up questions Brand thought he'd put to rest.

The sparks that send their hearts galloping lead to a deeper passion than either man expects. But by giving in to the chemistry without taking a risk and committing to each other—or, more importantly, to themselves and living the lives they've always wanted—Brand and Hugo might lose their second chance at true love.

Shannan☆☆☆☆
His Fresh Start Cowboy is the first book in the Woods Ranch series. The Woods Ranch series is a spin-off from the Clean Slate Ranch series. Anyone that has read the Clean Slate Ranch series will know Hugo. Brand from Woods Ranch is the brother of Colt from Clean Slate Ranch. You don't need to read the Clean Slate Ranch series before this one, but I wouldn't discourage it at all!

Hugo ran from his past years ago and ended up at the Clean Slate Ranch but finding out the Woods Ranch was in trouble and needs experience, Hugo knows it is time face that past head on.

Hugo and Brand share a complicated past. Brand has buried those feelings Hugo brought out all those years ago but him being there on the Ranch is bringing those feelings right back into the light. I loved watching Brand and Hugo getting to know each other as men instead of the boys they once were. They had this slow angst that built throughout. Watching them grow and learn who they were and how they would fit in this new world was heartwarming. Watching Hugo come to grips with his past and letting go was emotional.

I think A.M. Arthur did a fantastic job merging these ranches and creating this new world that I can't wait to get more of.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the first book in a new series, but anyone who enjoys A.M. Arthur's Clean Slate Ranch will find we start out in a familiar world. I am looking forward to seeing how life at Woods Ranch progresses.

Hugo is ready to face his past, so when he hears that Woods Ranch needs some experienced help, he applies for a job there. Thus he reveals his identity to his boss, Colt, who had left his family ranch before Hugo started hanging around with his youngest brother.

We get the story from both Hugo and Brand's perspective, and it helps to flesh out the past as well as the present and even their fears of the future. I greatly enjoyed the immersion into cowboy ranch life, as well as the tentative steps of a now grown man dealing with his ongoing feelings for a man who once kissed him as a teenager.

There are lots of side characters who I am hoping get to feature in future installments, although I want more Hugo and Brand too!

Veronica☆☆☆☆
Hugo decides to return to Texas after 10 years away. He takes a job working on the ranch of the family of his childhood best friend. He is also returning to face things he’d run away from. A bad home life, an abusive stepbrother, and Brand, his best mate’s brother who he has been crushing on for years.

This story is written from the point of view of both Hugo and Brand but for me, Hugo was the star. He was the one that I connected with. I thought he was so brave to go back to Texas to see his mum, who he left behind, and to confront his demons. There are some really difficult and heartbreaking scenes that had me crying my eyes out more than once.

The tiny glimmer of hope for Hugo is that there might be a possibility of a relationship with Brand. But there are obstacles in the way, not the least of which is Brand himself not having the courage to actually go after what he really wants. I liked Brand but there were a few times that he made me crazy.

While this story takes its time but is never boring. I really liked the pace and simplicity of life on the ranch. I really loved Hugo. He goes through a lot of ups and downs, and it was an emotional rollercoaster for me. But it was all worth it to see Hugo happy. His Fresh Start Cowboy is a great first book in a new series and I look forward to reading more stories from Woods Ranch.

Angie☆☆☆
This is a spin-off of the Clean Slate Ranch series but you don't have to read that series to read this one. I loved most of the books in the Clean Slate Ranch series, so I was excited to start this one. Honestly, I struggled with this book. I thought it was slow and I found myself skimming at times. I couldn't really connect with either Hugo or Brand and that might be why I didn't love this book. The hot and cold, back and forth, and the slow burn just wasn't working for me. I will read the next book in the series; just because this one didn't hit the mark doesn't mean I won't love the next one.

Surrender to Me by Kelly Elliott Release Blitz

Surrender to Me. New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kelly Elliott. A Boggy Creek Valley Novel. Kindle Unlimited.

Arabella Adams was the one woman I would have laid my life down for, no matter the circumstance, because that’s what you would do for your soulmate. But when she broke up with me our senior year of college—for no reason or explanation at all—my world as I knew it fell completely apart. My heart was instantly ripped from my chest… and it was a pain I felt in my very soul, and one I never truly recovered from.

Now, here I am, ten years later, and I’ve finally learned the real reason Bella pushed me away. So, I must prove to her that anything that happened in her past—our past—doesn’t change the way I feel about her. After all, soulmates never stop loving each other, and even a decade later, I will make her see that I will protect her until the day I die.

Because you see, we promised one another we wouldn’t keep secrets, wouldn’t hide parts of ourselves that the other wouldn’t understand. Except, well, I lied. Because the moment I find the person who took Bella from me all those years ago, I’m going to make him pay for every lost moment of the past ten years, and nothing—not even the fact I’m a cop—will stop me from inflicting the same level of pain on him that Arabella and me endured all this time.

Note to readers: Arabella endures trauma no woman should have to suffer. Respectfully, the author invites you to emotionally and mentally prepare before experiencing this book on your own terms, should you choose to do so.

Surrender to Me is book four in the Boggy Creek Valley series and can be read as a standalone. For a better reading experience, the author suggests reading them in order.

Surrender to Me is the fourth installment in the Boggy Creek Valley series. It can be read as a standalone but reads so much better if read in the order that the author intended. You really need past mentions in the rest of the series to get the full emotional impact of Hunter and Bella's story.

“This belongs to you, and if I have to wait an eternity for you to open up to me, then I'll wait. I just want you to trust me, to know that I'll never leave you. I need you to surrender to me Bella.”

Hunter and Bella were high school sweethearts with their future planned out in front of them. After college they would marry and start the family they had always dreamed of, until Bella came home announcing she had quit school in the last semester of her senior year. She was shutting out Hunter and breaking up with him, with no explanation.

After ten years, Hunter had tried to move on but couldn't. Bella was it for him and he was going to do whatever he had to do to make that happen. Bella was so broken and didn't know how to come back from what she experienced in college, it changed her in so many ways she didn't even recognize herself anymore. Could Hunter break down the walls she built around her heart and body? Was Bella willing to get the help she needed to be able to move on?

“I hate seeing you cry. But when you do, I want to be the one who wipes your tears away. I don't want to fight your fights, Bella. I never have. What I want to do is stand next to you and help you fight them.”

I could not wait for Hunter and Bella's story. Bella is so broken but working so hard to get back to the woman she once was. Hunter was the absolute gentleman she needed. It was an emotional read that had me trying to read through the tears.

I can't wait to see where Brighton's story goes next!!

Ohmigod! I cannot wait for everyone to read this one. You will not be able to put it down, except for work and sleep. And maybe not then.

What happens when The Brit and The Enigma collide? You get The Resurrection. Somehow, someone finds out that Danny Black is alive and his world on the island is compromised. So they must go back to Miami and find out who is after him now.

There is so much going on, so many people after Danny and James – but who is “The Bear” and why is he after them? That is the big question, but you will have to read the book for answers.

This story is filled with murder, mystery, romance, cold-heartedness, intrigue, and best of all, love.

This author has once again shown that she can write a story that you can picture in your mind as if you are watching it on TV. Malpas has grown into this world of dark romance and is only getting better with each book written. I cannot wait for more.

Oh my goodness, so much perfection in this book – in the wonderfully imperfect way of Maggie and Cam.

This may be the fifth book in the series and I most definitely recommend that you read them all and in order... and then you will realise that these two have been skirting around each other for a long while already!

In fact, Maggie gave up on Cam a long time ago and married her loser, now deceased, husband. She is most definitely sworn off men, which makes Cam's return a little inconvenient, shall we say. I loved watching these two circle around each other, get to learn the person underneath the public persona, and try their hardest to make each other's lives better. It was utterly enchanting and also a lot of fun. The rest of the O'Callaghan siblings, their partners and offspring, as well as their parents, all come together in this really family-oriented world to make what they all knew was inevitable years ago, become a reality now.

Delicious from the very first page – do not delay, go and grab a copy and enjoy!

M/F Romance

I will preface this by saying I love Proby books. I have read them all several times.

Maggie has been through the ringer with her husband. A bad man to the core, she has had to crawl back to herself after being emotionally abused by him. When she finally feels like she's getting her feet under her, she isn't quite sure what will happen next. She's surrounded by her family, who love her and want what's best for her.

Cameron is part of the O'Callaghans' family through and through. He was adopted into their fold when he was a teenager and never really left.

When Maggie and Cameron finally figure out that their attraction isn't going to go away, both realize that they could have something amazing. But Cameron has a secret, and he isn't allowed to share. Maggie's past comes back to find her again and the O'Callaghans will have to nudge and push these two in the right direction to find happiness.

I was slightly disappointed in this story. It's missing the Proby angst and romance, in my opinion. This was much more a young adult romance and friends-to-lovers type story, but more mundane than I'm used to with Proby's writing. It was still enjoyable, but less like the With Me in Seattle series and the other O'Callaghans series.

“Am I dreaming this?” He smiles, and I realize that I spoke that thought aloud. “If you are, don’t wake us up.”
