Nix Kane is a single dad, computer geek, and not looking for love. He hasn't wanted a relationship since Lexi left him and his daughter several years ago without a word. And he likes it that way, until he gets a look at Payton Tucker. She checks off all the boxes in a woman he didn't know he was looking for.

Payton seems to be a little too much like the woman that left him. She is there for a reason and to help a friend. She has to get close to Nix without losing her heart. She is surprised to learn he has a daughter.

Will Payton be able to get what she came after and leave Nix? Can Nix trust her to not hurt him and his daughter? Who sent her and why? Will his girlfriend ever return?

I love this series and these Kane men get better with each brother. If you haven't read anything from Kelly Gendron, you should, and it doesn't matter what you read. She will make you fall in love with the hero and heroine of each story. So grab a book and enjoy the ride. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

This is the fourth book in the series, and having recently read all the previous three in anticipation of this one coming out, I can tell you that you should definitely experience the goodness from the very beginning. Nix is a bit of an outlier in the brothers, so I found his story to be a great addition to the series. The other bit of good news is that we do get to see the rest of the family (well, Stone is mentioned at least!) and catch up on their romances too.

Nix has a lot more depth than we might initially imagine. There have been hints in earlier books, but as this one played out, the layers around him peel off to leave him bare. There is the outward view of a very sexy single dad, whose girlfriend left him holding the baby and has never been seen again (little would you guess why). He has not engaged in any meaningful relationships since – in fact, his attitude towards women and sex is to say the least, clinical, and since being caught out, pretty much defunct. So when Payton Tucker appears in his sight-lines, he is to say the least, confused, but mostly hugely turned on.

Each of the stories have had a moment when the reactions of one or other lead has led to a huge "sigh and ahhh" moment, this one is just as moving as the others, and perhaps even more so as there is a six year old girl involved. I am reluctant to say more, because really you need to absorb the story yourself, and be entertained and confounded as much as I was. It is definitely worthwhile.

Thank you, Kelly Gendron, for such a lovely story for Nix.

It’s just supposed to be a weekend fling...

But while she may not need a man, she could use a break. And a weekend away at a California beach to clear her head? That’s appealing. Even if the offer comes from Trey Collins, the irresistible tech-mogul millionaire who visits her coffee shop every morning like clockwork—and needs a date for his best friend’s wedding. With an adorable, occasional stutter, he refuses to take no for an answer.

Once the weekend begins, Trey is intent on proving how good they can be together. Willow’s even feeling tempted to break her vow—until reality rudely interrupts her well-deserved getaway. There’s no way she and Trey have a future, not with the colossal amount of baggage Willow has to offer.

This is the fourth book in an interlinked series. All the main characters appear across the books, but each could be read alone in my opinion. In this installment we get to enjoy the wedding of Caitlin and Jonas, whose story features in 28 Dates.

Trey needs a date for the wedding and finally manages to persuade Willow at his favourite coffee shop to go with him. He has been trying for ages as he finds her irresistible, but sadly she has been reluctant until now. We soon discover why, as she is dealing with her troubled mother and associated money issues.

The romance is a sweet one, but I did find there was a lot of inner voice to get the information across and sometimes it was, for me, overly descriptive. As we get to learn the story from both sides, it would have been easy for them to have conversations about a lot of the stuff we are told, and that maybe would have engaged me more in the moment. When the real drama does happen, I was just confused as to why Willow was so surprised at her mother's state. That said, it was indicative of her inability to communicate well, as she could have learned much from her father if she had been in contact with him earlier. I did think that the issue of mental illness was by the end dealt with with care.

Stacey Lynn is a simple girl raised in the Midwest. Over the long, frigid winters, she would read every book she could get her hands on, from John Grisham and Danielle Steel to Ann M. Martin and C.S. Lewis. She began writing poems and short stories long before she reached high school, and now, as a wife and mother to four children, she finds solace from the craziness of her life by creating steamy, sexy stories. After publishing her first book, what began as a hobby has now turned into an unending passion.

This is book five of the Record series – the first three telling Brady's story, the next Clay's, and now at last we get Savannah's. She has no intention of following the political dynasty, but instead plans on being a journalist.

All her life Savannah has known and been best friends with Lucas Attwood. Their parents spend a lot of time together, so their lives are fully intermeshed. That said, they did split when it was time to go to college, and the feelings they have had for each other somehow caused a rift. So, even though they both love each other, they both try to move on. For Lucas, his basketball ensured he was popular with the ladies, but he never really stopped loving Savi. Savannah, though, fell for Easton and now, three years on, is moving with him to DC to start their careers.

Easton has had to be very understanding of Savi and Lucas seeing each other often, but when he finds Lucas is drafted to DC too, he takes a drastic step to secure his woman. I felt that he behaved absolutely as I would have imagined, and have to say it was difficult to dislike him, even if he was obviously not going to win the day!

It was fun having the mix of newbie in a big newspaper office with politics, with sport – and liberal dashings of second-chance romance, family obligations, and a rather excessive desire to not rock the boat. I felt it worked well and there was enough to see them as flawed individuals growing up in a slightly rarified world, and making that transition from student to worker, as well as from friend to lover. It was also good to catch up with the Maxwell clan too.

Avid Reader☆☆☆
M/F Romance – Second-Chance Romance

I read only the first book in this series and then this one. While I didn't necessarily feel that something was missing, I'm unsure if the backstory between the main characters happens in previous books.

Savannah has grown up as part of the political circle. She knows that she has to act a certain way, live a certain way, and that there are certain expectations of her. Now that she is moving in with Easton, her boyfriend of three years, and she's getting her dream job, Savannah believes everything is on its way. When she sees Lucas again at her graduation party, she is swept back to before.

Lucas has tried to stay away as much as possible. He knows that his presence throws Savannah off a little, but he also knows that they were best friends for years and he wanted to congratulate her on starting her new life. Lucas is also getting what he always wanted – he's going to the NBA.

When Savannah's mom meddles in her life, she finds herself at a party with Lucas while Easton is back home.

This book felt very young adult. It was almost like these main characters were teenagers in adult situations. I didn't like how wishy-washy the main character leads were in their attempts in their relationships. Perhaps if I had read previous books, it might have been more cohesive, but it just felt very truncated.

Also, it didn't really seem that Savannah and Lucas or Savannah and Easton really had any chemistry. They were more friends than anything and then all of a sudden there was a relationship. Overall, while it was a quick read, it just wasn't what I expected. I found myself somewhat bored with the interactions.

Wish Upon a Cowboy by Jennie Marts

Hot on the ice and tall in the saddle...

Rancher and hockey coach Logan Rivers' attempts to hire a housekeeper are hindered by women more interested in marriage than meal-planning. So when snarky Harper Evans arrives with zero romantic interest in him, he couldn't be happier. But as he gets to know her, he finds himself hungering for more than her cooking.

Down-on-her-luck single mom Harper Evans came to Colorado with one goal: to find her son and bring him home. Temporary work for a local rancher seems perfect, but to keep the job she has to deny her feelings for the hot cowboy who's heating up her kitchen.

Logan's secret learning disability has caused a financial mistake that could cost him everything. With the holidays approaching and a storm closing in, he and Harper have to save his ranch and fight for her son. But can Harper trust the cowboy who is offering her both a home—and his heart?

Harper is a woman who is just getting herself back together. After trusting her mom one too many times, Harper found herself having to call her mother-in-law to take her son while she had to go to jail for a few months. With a new lease on life, she has taken her last dollars to head to the town where her son is living. She wants to see him, hug him, and take him back home. But when she arrives in town, she needs a job in order to save up money to go back home.

Logan is trying to keep his family's business running while his dad is away helping another family member. Despite his bachelor status, he isn't looking for someone to warm his bed at the moment, which makes his housekeeper's advances very uncomfortable. Having to fire someone he's known for a while because she was more interested in him than doing her job was not the way he wanted to start his day.

With an introduction to Logan, Harper knows that she can do a good job. However, she is also wary of telling people her personal business. She seeks out her son, but bitterness and hatred fly out of her mother-in-law's mouth. Harper has to decide whether or not she truly is the best for her son.

This was a super sweet story. The characters are relatable, and I really enjoyed the townspeople too. When push comes to shove, will the people side with Harper or with her ugly mother-in-law? This story was quick to read but moved along well. The characters were well developed and I liked watching Harper and Logan's relationship build.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the fourth book in the series, and each one gives us another cowboy's story. Here Logan is about to find love from a most unlikely arrival into town.

Harper has had a rough time of it, yet really has no self-pity, she is just desperate to be reunited with her young son, Floyd. He is in Creedence with his paternal grandmother, Judith. Judith is not keen on Harper ever seeing her son again, which is a fairly extreme reaction to what has happened, but seriously impacts Harper's self-esteem and her confidence. Having arrived in town and found a temp job with Logan, she cannot wait to reunite with her son. Of course, nothing really runs smoothly – but as we get both her and Logan narrating the story, we know exactly how much they are falling for each other, and how difficult that is for both of them to address.

That time with just the two of them as employee/employer gives us a good chance to see what a good person Harper really is, and what a caring, lonely soul Logan is too. The chemistry is great and there is a lovely level of banter and snark between them which really made me chuckle. It is a well-rounded story, which ties up all the slightly worrying loose ends and gives both Logan and Harper exactly what they need as well as who they want!

I really enjoyed this addition to the series, and am looking forward to Zane having a chance sometime soon (hint, hint).

Hometown Christmas by Garrett Leigh Blog Tour

Yani Nicolaou is sworn off love for good. After fleeing a bad break-up in London, the only blood, sweat, and tears he has left are for his gyro stall at the Christmas market. Rebound fling? No thanks. He’s sticking to one-night-stands.

Ex-army vet Gavin Richie has even less capacity for romance. Managing a homeless shelter while recovering from injury keeps him far too busy. So what if he’s often alone? He’s content being single, or so he thinks until a chance meeting lights a spark he can’t ignore.

Yani is the warmth and affection Gavin hadn’t known he was missing. As Christmas lights up the city, their lives entwine in more ways than one. Falling for each other is easy. Holding on is harder, unless a hometown Christmas proves their love can last longer than the festive season.

Sarah☆☆☆☆☆
This is the perfect holiday read for me. With links to two of my favourite Garrett Leigh series, Gavin and Yani’s story is a perfect balance of urban grit and holiday feels.

Fans of Leigh’s writing will love this book. Yani’s Greek food stall brought me straight back to the Urban Soul books that made me first fall in love with Leigh’s writing, while Gavin brings some of the magic from Between Ghosts with him. Yani and Gavin are wonderfully complicated characters, but the story doesn’t dig as deeply into their pasts and their issues as some of Leigh’s other books do. Both Gavin and Yani are building new lives in Leeds and much of the story focuses on the homeless shelter Gavin runs.

The connection that builds between Yani and Gavin is tentative and more tender than sexy. This isn’t one of Leigh’s racier books. For me, this is a welcome change from the many frothy and saccharine holiday romance novels that emerge at this time of year. Instead of a picket fence hometown, the story is set in Leeds city centre and Gavin and Yani navigate some genuinely difficult issues on the way to their happily ever after. I loved it – and I loved catching up with characters from earlier books.

In the Unlikely Event by L.J. Shen Blog Tour

From #1 Amazon Bestseller L.J. Shen comes a new, star-crossed lovers romance about loss, love, and meeting The One when you are too young to know how to keep them.

Sometimes you meet people who are out of this world, so you make them a part of yours.

A one-night stand born from vengeance in a foreign land.
An explosive chemistry neither of us could deny.
We signed a contract on the back of a Boar’s Head Pub napkin that said if we ever met again, we would drop everything and be together.
Eight years and thousands of miles later, he’s here.
In New York.
And he’s America’s music obsession.
The intangible Irish poet who brings record executives to their knees.
The blizzard in my perfect, unshaken snow globe.
Last time we spoke, he was a beggar with no intention of becoming a king.
But a king he became, and now I’m his servant.
I’m not the same broken princess Malachy Doherty put back together with his callused hands.
I have a career I love.
A boyfriend I adore.
An apartment, a roommate, a life.
I changed. He changed, too.
But Mal kept the napkin.
Question is, will I keep my word?

When I finally come face to face with the street artist standing on the side of the pavement, his guitar case open and full of rolled-up notes and change, I understand why his grandfather told me I’d recognize him with the self-assurance of an avid believer.

I’ve never seen someone like him before.

He is beautiful, true, but that’s not what stands out to me. He is radiant.

It’s like his presence has a presence. He sucks the air out of everything in his vicinity, making it impossible not to look at him. Malachy is tailor-made for a huge, colossal heartbreak. Everything about him—his tattered jeans, filthy boots, white shirt, and leather jacket that was broken in decades ago—screams trouble. He looks like a seventies heartthrob. An icon. A Terry Richardson muse. Bruce Springsteen pre-fame.

His voice is like honey and warm spices. It lulls me into a place in my mind I’ve never been before, even though it’s far from beautiful. It is gruff, throaty, and smoky. When someone bumps my shoulder to get closer to him, I snap out of my reverie and realize what I’m listening to.

“One” by U2.

The coincidence is strange. I try to tell myself it’s nothing. This is Ireland. U2 is a national treasure.

His eyes are squeezed shut as he sings. It’s like no one exists other than him and his guitar. Something warm rushes through my skin, like a heat wave, and I shudder in delight.

Warmth.

I always thought there was something melancholy about street performers—the way people walk past them, ignoring their music, their art, their passion. But this guy, he’s the one doing the ignoring. The tables have turned. He’s got the crowd eating from the palm of his hand. Every woman here is under a thick, sweet spell. He’s got that Harry Styles quality that makes girls want to bed him and older women want to adopt him. The men are a cross between impatient, annoyed, and jealous. You can see it in the way they tap their feet, check their watches, nudge their wives and girlfriends to move it.

The song ends, and Malachy Doherty cracks his eyes open and stares directly at me, like he knew I’d be here. Like he watched me watching him through closed eyes. Disoriented—and for some reason wanting to do something, anything—I throw a bill into his guitar case and look away, realizing to my horror that I threw the fifty euros his grandpa gave me. Everyone around me murmurs and whistles. They think it was intentional. I can feel my face flaming red. I bet he thinks I want to sleep with him.

Do I? Probably. But should he know that? Hell no.

Mal and Rory fall in love in 24 hours when Rory is only 18 years old. They make a connection most people dream about. When this 24 hours was over, I felt really hopefully for our couple even though they were not together at this point. I was thinking this story had a different feel from the previous books I’d read by Shen. But I had spoken (or thought) too soon. Before I knew it, angst and drama were running rampant. My hope was fading just a little as I wondered how on earth Rory and Mal were going to get a happily ever after.

I still had faith in our couple because even after eight years apart they are still clearly crazy about each other. The problem is there are so many secrets being kept from Rory, not just by Mal but by other people in her life. I loved the way the secrets were kept and revealed. When some were uncovered, I wasn’t surprised as they were things I suspected, others were a complete surprise, things I did not see coming that left me with my mouth hanging open.

But my favourite thing about this story are the notes. The majority of this story is told from Mal and Rory’s point of view, except for the notes which are scattered throughout the book. They are from other characters in the story, both alive and dead, inanimate objects, and even a cow (that one made me laugh). The notes are fun, cute, serious, and one tore my heart out and had me crying big ugly tears.

I was completely captivated by In the Unlikely Event. Mal and Rory are not characters I have anything in common with, but their love and their chemistry pulled me right in and didn’t let go. Their story is difficult and they have to fight to get what they want and that makes it that much sweeter.

Erica☆☆☆☆☆
Spoiler-Free review: no book report, featuring a play-by-play of the plot. To go too in-depth would ruin the journey for readers. Just my entertainment value found in the novel itself. The blurb does a wonderful job giving the reader what to expect on the pages.

Escapism at its finest. In the Unlikely Event is a standalone by LJ Shen. I am a self-admitted fangirl, so realize this review is written with that bent.

Worn-down from working 'round the clock, and suffering from a dreaded cold, I was thrilled to have In the Unlikely Event drop into my tablet to escape life's little miseries for a few hours. Read from start to finish in one sitting.

One of my favorite tropes is second-chance. After a whirlwind insta-love, where Mal and Rory fell head over heels in a day's span, fast-forward eight years for a hefty dose of angst and more angst and secrets and unexpected humor.

More mature adults, no longer teenagers, the emotions are deeper and rawer. Mal and Rory bring the romantic tension, which had me clicking the pages at a rapid rate. LJ Shen shined at the delivery of information, which kept me on fully-engaged from start to finish. Secrets and lies, some taking me by surprise while others were easy to deduce, but all that angst was hella entertaining.

A solid mix of tension, banter, humor, and the full spectrum of emotions, I can't highly recommend In the Unlikely Event enough to readers who are fans of the author, as well as this being a good place to start for new readers.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆☆
This is a wonderful book – it has many, many layers, and I will most definitely be reading it again, probably more than once. I have no doubt that in my haste to find out what happened, I missed some of the detail.

Be prepared for a complicated, but somewhat magical tale of two people who completely fill every moment of the book – and both tell us their point of view... but, and this gave rise to my absolute favourite line in the book – we also get some of the side characters’ points of view, including the chocolate bar (I challenge you to find a better use of three words!).

The information we get to help us make our judgements of people is used to confuse, confound, and cause us to doubt, and struggle to understand their motives and actions. It is clever, fascinating, and helps to draw the story into something much more than just a second-chance romance. The level of history, of subterfuge, and of downright lies and deceit make the intensity of the feelings between Rory and Mal stand out like snow in a world of mud. Or at least that is how I felt.

This is a wonderful book – I am indeed repeating myself – and I recommend that you go and get a copy straight away and enjoy it from cover to cover.

Shannan☆☆☆☆☆
I absolutely loved In the Unlikely Event. It hit so many emotions throughout the story, one page being brought to tears and the next laughing out loud. Those are some of my favorite reads, the ones that make you feel as you read their story and Shen did it amazingly.

Mal and Rory had off-the-charts chemistry. There was so much angst and sexual tension between them it was perfect. This story is so unique compared to anything I've read from Shen. She is quickly becoming a go-to author. I highly recommend you one clicking this one, it is so worth the rollercoaster Shen takes you on.
