Followill by Erica Chilson Release Blitz

Imagine the rage… From learning everything you thought you knew was nothing but secrets covered in lies. Rayna Scott doesn’t have to imagine the rage…

Imagine the rage…

Imagine the rage from being the only child of foundlings, one raised across the street from where I’ve spent my entire life, and the other raised in a prominent family but refuses to tell me her maiden name. Yeah, try answering security questions without that important detail.

Imagine the rage from learning everything you thought you knew was nothing but secrets covered in lies, as an entire town enables my momma.

Imagine the rage after losing my daddy, only to have to take care of a fragile southern lady who doesn’t know the definition of responsibility.

Imagine the rage from having the only person who meant anything taken from me. My best friend. My math teacher. My soon-to-be stepdaddy only a few years older than me, who picked my momma over me.

Imagine the rage of witnessing a wedding being planned that costs more than a four-year higher education degree, a down payment on a house, and a new car, with a wedding party that wouldn’t fit packed inside a school bus. All because Momma hitched her wagon to Followill’s most prominent son, after I’ve worked to support us both since Daddy died.

Imagine the rage of swallowing your pride, as a young woman of color forced to be the Maid of Dishonor at a wedding hosted at a plantation, because it’s the groom’s ancestral home that will look pretty in the pictures.

Imagine a momma who stole my man, then decided to get married less than a week before graduation, smack-dab during finals, and hours before my eighteenth birthday, with the entire wedding party filled with my furious classmates.

I’m Rayna Scott, and that rage burns so bright, Momma no longer casts me in her shadow.

I forgot.

Have you ever had a favorite author whose writing you strayed from for a while, either because they started writing in a new genre, or you started reading in a new genre, or perhaps there was a lengthy break in their publishing schedule, or something else happened that led you to take a break from reading their books? And then you pick up their latest release and get so sucked into the story that it’s almost like you’re getting to experience their writing for the first time, and you find yourself falling in love with one of your favorite authors all over again.

So yeah, that was me as I read Followill. Because I forgot just how good Erica Chilson is at writing in the first person. Because I forgot just how good she is at making me feel the main character’s emotions, especially their frustration when those around them – the people they’re supposed to be able to trust completely – are lying to them, both outright lies and lies of omission. Because I forgot just how good she is at spinning a web of secrets, lies, and betrayal that I can feel the metaphorical gut punch the main character experiences when they discover they’re living in a house of cards, not of their own making, and it’s falling down around them. Because I forgot just how good she is at creating a small town and its small-minded, judgmental, gossiping residents who will cut you with words, but will have your back and defend you against outsiders because no one comes into their town and messes with their people. Because I forgot just how good she is at creating families whose family trees have too many branches, or too few branches, or branches that intersect and twist around one another so much that you understand the need for blood tests before marriage certificates are issued. Because I forgot that even when I manage to sus out what’s happening before the main character does, there’s a curve ball I didn’t see coming that will leave me just as devastated as they are. And because I forgot just how damn good she is at writing a cliffhanger that I both loathe and love in equal measure because I love that anticipation of having to wait for the next book because I absolutely MUST KNOW what happens next, all while loathing that I have to wait… hanging onto that cliff by my fingertips and cursing her name the entire time.

My hat’s off to you, Erica Chilson, Mistress of Mindfuckery and Cliffhangers, because once again, you have delivered it all. I cannot wait to crack open my review copy of book two because simply waiting long enough to write my review was as long as I could stand to wait. Because I remember now. I remember just how good you are at ensnaring me with your writing and making me lose myself in your worlds. And I’m ready to return to Followill to discover what you have in store for Rayna because as bumpy as her ride in book one was, I suspect that rollercoaster she’s on is just getting started and I’m not convinced it’s going to remain on its tracks. And I have questions, soooooo many questions that need answers because I also remember just how much you like to use foreshadowing, and quite a few seeds have been planted along the way and I can’t wait to see what else you have to sow in Followill.

Followill by Erica Chilson is Rayna Scott's story. A young woman in Followill, Louisiana who has experienced some serious lessons in her 17 years of life. Rayna has fought for everything, she's earned every bit of good, and she has worked hard for every achievement.

Feeling every bit the outcast, as teenagers do, she has a small network around her, including her momma and her math teacher, Charlie Followill.

But things are rarely what they seem, no matter your age, and the town of Followill has many, MANY secrets that need to come to light!

This story sucked me in: I like many of the characters and want to get to know them better (Damien, especially), there are naughty and taboo-ish themes, and some strange family dynamics. I want, no, I NEED to know what is really going on. These people have secrets layered in secrets, and I need to know how Rayna is involved or more likely, what her momma was hiding and why.

I enjoyed this story, the characters, the mystery of Followill but man, the cliffhanger is KILLER! No worries though, as I WILL be rabidly waiting for book two.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆☆
This is the first book in a trilogy – and you will want to get hold of book two the second you arrive at the final page! Followill is the name of the town where this book is set, and the name of the principal family of the town. Everyone wants the power and prestige which comes with that name, and those who don't are considered less.

Rayna Scott, at 17, has no intention of being seen as less, and in addition to working so hard at school to ensure she gets the scholarship which will see her finally leave to go to college, she has been in charge of the household since her father died when she was 14. Her momma never really recovered her health and is seemingly incapable of working – so it falls to Rayna.

Then her beloved maths teacher, and best friend – Charlie Followill – becomes her mother's boyfriend, fiancé, and soon-to-be husband... this riles up Rayna inside so much... yet she would never deny her mother anything. This dichotomy is described with such power and vehemence it is impossible to stop reading. I loved that Rayna is both old and wise beyond her years, but then also wonderfully naive and young. It rang so true, and many of us will identify with parts of her thoughts.

There is an amazing tension which exists from the very beginning, and unsettles, and makes one curious, possibly a little confused, and definitely expectant... just go read it and find out why!

Give me book two... NOW!

Author Bio

ERICA CHILSON does not write in the 3rd person, wanting her readers to be her characters. Therefore, writing a bio about herself, is uncomfortable in the extreme.

Born, raised, and here to stay, the Wicked Writer is a stump-jumper, a ridge-runner. Hailing from North Central Pennsylvania, directly on the New York State border; she loves the changes in seasons, the humid air, all the mountainous forest, and the gloomy atmosphere.

Introverted, but not socially awkward, Erica prides herself on thinking first and filtering her speech. There are days she doesn’t speak at all. If it wasn’t for the fact that she lives with her parents, giving her a sense of reality, she would be a hermit, where the delivery man finds her months after expiration.

Reading was an escape, a way to leave a not-so pleasant reality behind. Reading lent Erica the courage she gathered from the characters between the pages to long for a different life. Writing was an instrument of change, evolving Erica into the woman she is today – a better, more mature, more at peace thinker.

Erica has a wicked mind, one she pours out into her creations. Her filter doesn’t allow all of it to erupt, much to her relief. Sarcastic, with a very dark, perverse sense of humor, Erica puts a bit of herself into every character she writes.

Rookie Mistakes by Beth Laycock Release Blitz

Lights Out Series. RJ Scott, Lisa Henry, Charlie Novak, H.L. Day, Emma Jaye & Beth Laycock.

Can a rookie mistake lead to love?

Mitch Griffiths is an ordinary man just trying to make ends meet. He lost everything thanks to his ex: his restaurant, his partner, his home. So, when his dad gifts him a ticket to the British Grand Prix and a Silverstone Driving Experience, well, a change of scene for the weekend couldn’t hurt, could it? Even if Formula 1 is kind of boring.

Robert Andilet is a veteran F1 driver on his returning season after a six-year absence. He has a lot to learn, not least of which is how to deal with the media attention, a “rivalry” between him and his rookie teammate, as well as his attraction to a man who readily admits he thinks F1 is tedious. It was a rookie mistake to let Mitch walk away after their first meeting, will Robert make the same mistake again?

This M/M romance from Beth Laycock features a famous/ordinary man, older MCs, and is set in the high-octane world of Formula 1 featuring fast cars, spectacular crashes, heated rivalries, and of course, a HEA.

Shannan☆☆☆☆
Rookie Mistakes is the final installment of the Lights Out series. The Lights Out series is a multi-author series, and each book can be read as a standalone and in any order.

Robert Andilet is returning to the F1 circuit after being gone for six years. He signed with a rookie team and is trying to prove to himself and to the team that they belong among the well-known drivers and teams. When Robert finds himself having to drive fans around the track as a F1 fan appreciation. What he isn't expecting is the quiet man who doesn't seem to be a fan since he has no idea who he is. And something about that draws Robert in.

Mitch Griffiths finds himself losing everything due to the fault of his ex-boyfriend, Leo. Mitch trusted him to be taking care of the business side of their restaurant business, but Mitch found out too late that wasn't the case. Forced to move back in with his parents isn't what Mitch wants to do, but he was left with nothing. When his dad, a huge F1 fan, gifts him tickets to the race and a driver appreciation ticket, he has no idea that an actual driver was going to be the one driving him around the track. What he doesn't expect is to be attracted to the man, so when Robert invites him to dinner after the race he can't help but want to get to know him better.

Mitch and Robert worked through long distance and having a text and video call relationship, but they got to learn so much about each and that made the moments that did get to spend together that much more special.

I was so invested in this entire series. These have been the first F1 books I've ever read, and I am hooked. This was a new-to-me author, and I couldn't have been happier with this author’s style and attention to detail. I can't wait to read more.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is another hugely readable book in the Lights Out series. If you have not read the others yet, well you are in for a treat! Each written by a talented author, and with crossover events to enjoy, I have found each one to be very engaging.

Robert Andilet has been out of F1 for a while, but he took a seat in a team low on the grid with high hopes of improving their lot. Whilst at Silverstone, he meets Mitch at a 'meet the drivers' event. Amusingly, Mitch has no idea who he is, and whilst definitely attracted to him, has no expectations that the feelings might in any way be returned. The rest, as they say, is history, but we get to go along for the ride and enjoy them finding their way to each other.

Mitch is pretty jaded due to a failed partnership resulting in him losing his business and his savings, let alone the man – and now finds himself living with his parents and working in someone else's restaurant. Being in a relationship with an F1 driver seems ridiculous in the circumstances; however, Rob is worldly wise enough to know that this is something special and worth the effort. He proves this multiple times, and I loved the low angst of their relationship.

It worked out just as I would have hoped, with them staying very much in character throughout. Another very enjoyable addition to the series.

BETH LAYCOCK’s books are influenced by her time living overseas as well as the gritty, urban landscape of the north of England where she grew up.

She has been reading romance since she was old enough to tell herself that line every book lover does—just one more chapter.

As a teenager she attempted to write her first novel, and many more since then that are still gathering dust on her bookshelf. It wasn’t until she discovered the M/M genre that her muse showed up and refused to quit telling her stories about beautiful men finding love together. She hasn’t stopped scribbling them down since. Beth’s muse usually shows up when she is in the shower, is allergic to cleaning, rarely lets Beth watch TV, and insists she drinks copious amounts of coffee so she can turn caffeine into words.

Beth’s books range from sweet to sexy, long to short, contemporary to paranormal, but a HEA is always guaranteed.

Tempted by Lexi Blake Release Blitz

West will have to put his life on the line to protect her… or lose everything they’ve found.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lexi Blake comes a new story in her Masters & Mercenaries series…

When West Rycroft left his family’s ranch to work in the big city, he never dreamed he would find himself surrounded by celebrities and politicians. Working at McKay-Taggart as a bodyguard and security expert quickly taught him how to navigate the sometimes shark-infested waters of the elite. While some would come to love that world, West has seen enough to know it’s not for him, preferring to keep his distance from his clients—until the day he meets Ally Pearson.

Growing up in the entertainment world, Ally was always in the shadow of others, but now she has broken out from behind the scenes for her own day in the spotlight. The paparazzi isn’t fun, but she knows all too well that it’s part of the gig. She has a good life and lots of fans, but someone has been getting too close for comfort and making threats. To be safe, she hires her own personal knight in shining armor, a cowboy hottie by the name of West. They clash in the beginning, but the minute they fall into bed together something magical happens.

Just as everything seems too good to be true, they are both reminded that there was a reason Ally needed a bodyguard. Her problems have found her again, and this time West will have to put his life on the line or lose everything they’ve found.

Excerpt

Soft music was playing. It was folksy but modern. Not at all what he would expect. And she wasn’t in front of the TV. She sat at the dining table which was covered in… Were those puzzle pieces?

“Hey,” he said. “I’m here for the rest of the night and through tomorrow. Was Tessa okay?”

Her head came up, and she damn near took his breath away. She was in pajama bottoms and a tank top, her face scrubbed free and hair piled on top of her head. She was every bit as gorgeous this way. “She was great. I liked her a lot.”

“But you didn’t like Matt?”

Her lips turned down. “Well, now I like Tessa less.”

He set down his duffel on one of the chairs and set the grocery bag on the table away from the numerous puzzle pieces. She’d started working on the edges, and it looked like she was a sorter. “Don’t. It’s literally my job to make sure you’re okay. She’s going to give me any information I need.”

“Did she tell you I thought you were an asshole?”

For some reason, that made him smile. “She did. And I was. And if Matt does anything at all to make you uncomfortable, I expect you to tell me. Ally, I had a job go weird a couple of weeks ago. I know men are supposed to want any pretty woman who comes their way…”

She sat up, her expression turning distinctly sympathetic. “Someone tried to sex you up when you didn’t want to?”

That was one way of putting it. “She was very aggressive, and it bothered me more than I realized. I think I took a little of that out on you today, and for that, I am truly sorry.”

“Did she look like me or something?”

“Not even close,” he said with a huff. “Like she wasn’t as… No, she didn’t look like you. But she was something of a celebrity. She was a European royal.”

“Please tell me it was Kate.” Her eyes had gone super wide like this would be the best gift ever.

She would so get along with his brother and Martin. “It was not. She’s a minor royal but a major pain in my ass. I’m sorry. I hope you’ll give me a second chance.”

She stared for a moment as though assessing the situation. “Are those Flamin’ Hot Cheetos?”

“My brother’s fiancé swears you like them. His name is Martin, and he’s a big fan.”

Her shoulders relaxed, and he would have sworn that girl… woman… glowed. “That’s so nice. If he has any time, he could come up to the set and have lunch with us. And he’s right. Gimme. I love them, but the camera adds five pounds and…”

“You always have four cameras on you.” He handed her the chips and sat down. It would be a much quieter night than he’d counted on, but he kind of liked that.

She opened them and had one of those suckers in her mouth very quickly. She sighed, obviously content. “Not now I don’t. All right, Rycroft, we start again. And Matt’s probably fine. You’ll know he’s done something wrong if he has to go to the hospital because I kicked him in the balls. Pass me that blue piece. I think it goes here.”

He handed her the piece, and they got on with their first night.

The man was a golden god.

Growing up in Hollywood, Ally Pearson is tired of being in the shadows and is ready to begin her breakout role. But her latest stalker, or a new one, has struck again and her stepfather thinks it is time to get her personal security. That is where McKay-Taggart comes in.

West Rycroft grew up on a ranch in a small Texas town and knew it was time to leave when his twin brother left. He would always support his twin and he needed the change too. Now he is working at McKay-Taggart and has realized that protecting the rich and famous is not for him, until he meets Ally.

West and Ally click from their first meeting, whether they disagree on her safety or the sizzling touches, they are meant to be together. Will her lifestyle tear them apart? Will West finally see what his life is supposed to be? Can Ally and West make their relationship work?

I loved the banter between Ally and West from the beginning. I was trying to figure out who her stalker was, but I kept coming up with wrong guesses until it was obvious who it was. I love the way this author has of making this series where you are invested from the beginning, even when it is a novella like this one, but you have to know how the story ends. I hope there will be more to Ally and West's story in the future.

West is enjoying his life. Moving to the city was something he had to do in order to support his twin, yes, but West also needed to get out of his small town for him too. Now working security, West is trying to find his place in the world. After a protection duty that had him fending off the person he was supposed to be protecting, the last thing that West wants is another "entitled princess" to watch. But duty calls.

Ally is young and wanting to make her own mark on the movie world. She's coming from a past that has denied her the right to prove herself. Now that she's landed a real part, Ally wants to show everyone that she can act and that her reality show – or rather her sister's show – isn't what defines her and that Ally is more than the spoiled brat she portrays.

With someone stalking Ally, her family wants to make sure that she's safe. When West is hired to protect Ally, neither pulls any punches. Their meet-cute is anything but. Tempers flare, words are slung, and then they're off to the races.

As they get to know each other, their pasts come to light, their true selves are revealed, and the danger lurks closer and closer.

You won't be disappointed in this novella. It's a quick read that shows how first impressions aren't always right, everyone can change, and sometimes, finding yourself is the best way through.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is one of the wonderful 1001 Dark Nights series – and one of my favourites – Masters & Mercenaries Sanctum Nights. I long for a time when I can go back to the goodness of book one and read them all in one go – binge reading at its finest!

Here we find West, straight off his horrendous princess bodyguard stint and very reluctant to now work for a reality TV/acting princess. Fortunately, he is made to realise the error of his assumptions as he gets to know Ally better... a lot better!

I loved Ally's sharing of her inner thoughts with us, and her groundedness given the crazy upbringing she has had. When West and she start to gel, it is magic and well deserved by both. I love that this book enables West to think hard about what he really wants, rather than what worked at the time, and Ally gets the chance to do exactly the same – and so the impossible becomes the possible.

Delicious, could have read on another 1001 pages, love all these characters, so many lovely vignettes and poignant moments. Thank you, Lexi Blake, for another great installment.

Shannan☆☆☆☆
Hide Away by the Sea is the first book in the Oak Island series. It's a second-chance, low-angst read.

Everleigh and Jensen have been best friends for years. Right before she is ready to head off to Boston to follow her dreams, they share one night together. She hates leaving Jensen behind, but she needs to follow her dreams and become a surgeon. Twelve years later, she's living the life she has always wanted when she finds out her grandmother has died and left everything in North Carolina to her. Going back to that small town isn't what she imagined, but seeing Jensen and almost picking up right where they left off is almost like fate.

L.P. Dover has you quickly falling for this seaside small town. I loved that this was a second-chance romance, but it almost felt like a friends-to-lovers considering how things were left. Everleigh and Jensen were able to pick up that friendship and move it to the next level. It's a very low-angst read that is perfect for a summer beach read!

I can't wait to see what's next for this series!

Ruthie☆☆☆
This is an entertaining story about two people who were too young to grab hold of the special love they had and needed to stretch their wings. Now that they are back in the same town, we just have to see how they find their way back together.

Everleigh has a successful career but no life, so when her plans to finally spend time with her grandmother instead end up with her at her dearest relative’s funeral, she is adrift. Being back home inevitably brings her in contact with her first love, Jensen. They have a chance to get it right, and Jensen is not giving up this time.

I enjoyed the underlying story, even if a few bits didn’t really hang together as I expected. What did frustrate me, though, was the incredible levels of descriptive detail. I love imagining where characters are and how they have dressed if it is relevant to the scene, but not constantly. I don’t need to know the colour of every curtain either. Sometimes setting the scene is invaluable, other times it just cuts away from the story. There is plenty of story here, so it became distracting.

So many lovely things about life on Oak Island – and a slew of entertaining characters too – I am rather looking forward to going back and enjoying the next romance which is hinted at…

A part of me wanted to tell him not to leave… But I was afraid. I hated that I was terrified of the unknown.

When he was driving an expensive car that turned out to be stolen and his boyfriend claiming he knew nothing about him or the car. When Kieran comes out of prison his focus is revenge. Revenge against the people who put him in prison. After working with the prison's K9 program and finding he has a knack for working with animals, Cash, the owner of Redemption Ridge, hires him to work with the horses. Kieran finds himself working for Finley, the sexiest man he's ever seen, but not planning on sticking around after he finds his revenge, he doesn't want to hurt the man. But he can't get his sexy boss off his mind.

Finley doesn't have the best track record with men. His last boyfriend left him to join the local religious cult. He decided to swear off men for the last six months, that is, until Kieran shows up at the ranch. Finley doesn't want to scare Kieran away, but he can't help himself wanting to be near him as much as possible. When Finley and Kieran finally give into their desires, the chemistry is nothing but explosive.

Aimee Nicole Walker is a new-to-me author. I enjoyed everything about this story and found I couldn't put it down and devoured it in a day. I can't wait for what comes next for Redemption Ridge!

This is the first in a new series, and I am already looking forward to the next one! There are lots of strands in this book which I think will be explored further in future installments, which will lead to some new adventures for the guys at the ranch.

Finley works at Redemption Ridge, training horses and supporting ex-cons to find a better future. He has been attracted to bad boy types in the past, but after his last relationship, he is off men altogether. His fabulous mum is keen to change his mind on this, which supplies a lot of the humour in the book. When newly released Kieran arrives, he isn't sure how he will keep that promise, and all his mum's plans are in vain.

Kieran has just served 20 months for something he did not do – and I really enjoyed how that element of the story weaves itself through the book, like a thorn which needs removing, but life goes on in the meantime. It also gives us absolute permission to want everything to work out with Finley, even if it is not immediately obvious how. I loved how Kieran gets time to start drawing again, and that his natural talent with animals helps him heal.

The chemistry when they finally give into their desires is great, and also tinged with humour that neither of them have experienced before in intimate moments, fun times!

The Heirloom Inn by Olivia Miles

Old regrets lead to new directions.

From USA Today bestselling author Olivia Miles comes the heartfelt story of the bond that brings three sisters together to face past regrets and the future of their family’s legacy.

After the death of their beloved aunt, the estranged Burke sisters reunite at their childhood home for an unforgettable summer, each harboring a secret. With their family once again at a turning point, they must overcome their differences to discover what the future holds for the lakefront house and each other.

Leah’s marriage is over, which somehow still doesn’t uncomplicate matters when she reconnects with her first love. Emma is tired of being the responsible one, stuck in her hometown by obligation to her family and by feelings for someone she can’t have. Sadie’s life in New York has all but fallen apart, and she’s haunted by the mistakes she made that led her so far away from home in the first place.

But when they learn that their ancestral estate is in danger of foreclosure, the sisters must find a way to mend the rifts between them to save the only true home they’ve ever known—and with it, maybe they can stitch themselves back together too.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
I thoroughly enjoyed this book – it was very moving in places, very funny in others, and hugely entertaining all the way through. Whilst I think we could probably all guess what would happen, given the title of the book, it did not follow other expected norms. We are let into the life of four different women and learn just how easily life can change on a dime should fate decree. It is also a great reminder not to judge others or make assumptions without all the facts.

The reason for Leah and Sadie never coming home is borne of a misunderstanding and jealousy that could have been resolved much sooner, had they just spoken. I did feel there was one big inconsistency that bothered me, and that was the non-returning of the monies that Aunt Viv had lent to friends and neighbours – I was expecting some show of support or repayment, even in the form of food or labour. As the women grew into their new possibilities, we get to understand too how although history repeated itself, there can be a better outcome.

A good read, with plenty of flawed characters to give it more depth and a satisfying happy ending.
