Wexler by Erica Chilson

Struggling with an empty nest, the grieving process is taking its toll on the Wexler and Kline households, reaching all the way to Fairport to affect Auggie’s behavior. Suicide impacted the paths their lives have taken and how they view the world around them. Hopeless from the lack of answers, when the one person who could explain why no longer has a voice.

Lives permanently intertwined for over three decades, Adam Wexler still holds a torch for Lisa Kline after all these years, not realizing the envy he felt over Patrick Kline has shifted to the deepest of friendships.

Entering a new stage in life, where spoiling grandchildren will be their greatest joy, Adam, Patrick, and Lisa find hope, happiness, clarity, and an unforeseen change in their relationship.

All Hollows’ Eve, where the veil between the living and dead is at its thinnest, Adam is seeking answers from his son on the anniversary of the suicide. Instead, Adam finds acceptance that he’ll never know why, while giving himself permission to move forward with his life.

This is the 10th book in this series, and whilst you need not have read them all to understand the dynamics, it would most definitely help. If you choose to read it with no prior knowledge, then I would suggest that you keep reading, as you will get into the flow. It will probably have you eagerly downloading the earlier books and getting totally drawn into this amazing Blended world.

As well as bringing us a friendship which is deep and heartfelt, it also reveals that their feelings towards each other are conflicted. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed the three of them finally working out how best they should live their lives much more closely intertwined. In addition to the years long issue, there is real emotional confusion in the protagonists' minds between sadness due to death and happiness due to new life.

One of Chilson's shorter books, this covers a brief time period, yet a huge shift in the lives of three people and a great move towards their future happiness. There is definitely a feeling of redemption and unexpected peace delivered to all three of them – and I loved it.

Erica Chilson does not write in the 3rd person, wanting her readers to be her characters. Therefore, writing a bio about herself, is uncomfortable in the extreme.

Born, raised, and here to stay, the Wicked Writer is a stump-jumper, a ridge-runner. Hailing from North Central Pennsylvania, directly on the New York State border; she loves the changes in seasons, the humid air, all the mountainous forest, and the gloomy atmosphere.

Introverted, but not socially awkward, Erica prides herself on thinking first and filtering her speech. There are days she doesn’t speak at all. If it wasn’t for the fact that she lives with her parents, giving her a sense of reality, she would be a hermit, where the delivery man finds her months after expiration.

Reading was an escape, a way to leave a not-so pleasant reality behind. Reading lent Erica the courage she gathered from the characters between the pages to long for a different life. Writing was an instrument of change, evolving Erica into the woman she is today- a better, more mature, more at peace thinker.

Erica has a wicked mind, one she pours out into her creations. Her filter doesn’t allow all of it to erupt, much to her relief. Sarcastic, with a very dark, perverse sense of humor, Erica puts a bit of herself into every character she writes.

M/F Vampire romance

This is a very short story about love. Before Allegra turned Kyrian, she wanted to make sure that she maintained her own identity. However, the love that she felt for him was all consuming. She was worried that she would be lost. So, she broke her heart and his – she left him.

For centuries, she has run from Kyrian. But as the years have passed, Kyrian has grown stronger and his desire to find the love of his life has grown too.

When they find each other, both will have to decide how they want their future to look. Can they leave the past behind them and forge a new path? Or, are they destined to run and chase for the rest of eternity?

This book was so short that it was difficult to really get a sense of the characters. I think it would have been more successful had it been longer.

Multi-published author Scarlett Sanderson is a librarian by day and an erotic romance novelist by night. She lives in suburban England with her husband and dreams of having Lara Croft type adventures. As a reader, she loves to immerse herself in sweeping tales of romance, fantasy and most of all, tantalizing erotica. Those are the elements she tries to weave into the stories she creates, especially if they involve a whole lot of kink!

When not writing, Scarlett has a burning passion for history, good chocolate, great coffee and anything supernatural (especially if it includes the hunters Dean and Sam Winchester from the TV show Supernatural!).

Scarlett loves to hear from readers.

Shannan☆☆☆☆☆
Bailey is the sixth installment in the Confessions series. You should read the books in order to completely understand the storyline.

Bailey is a continuation of Henri and Bailey's story. They met at the wedding of Henri's ex, had instant chemistry, but Henri made a hasty exit. They ran into each other again in the most unexpected way when Bailey pulled Henri over. Knowing he wouldn't get another chance even though Henri knew he probably shouldn't be interested in the cop, he couldn't help himself.

I couldn't get enough of this couple, especially the stair scene... holy HOT! I think Bailey and Henri are the perfect versions of themselves when they are together and it makes for a hot, steamy read!

Ruthie☆☆☆☆☆
This is the sixth Confessions book, but really also that series follows on from the Temptation series – which I cannot recommend highly enough. So if you have never read any of these, then you have just found a dozen wonderful books to read – what a result! This story is based on knowledge in earlier books, which I am assuming you have read.

Bailey and Henri could not resist each other after the wedding reception, but Bailey is a man who screams commitment, stability, and law abiding... not exactly the characteristics we would attach to Henri. No, he has spent a lot of his life regretting that Priest really is not his, that their deeply dark and enmeshed history was not enough. He lives on the very edge of acceptable, and his CI work brings him in contact with the very worst of humanity – as far as he can imagine Bailey ever being. But their attraction to each other seems to be stronger than good sense!

I absolutely adored this story – it was wonderful to finally see Henri find a man who can see right inside him and make him also believe that he has value. Craig Bailey is definitely that man. Ella Frank has once again given us everything we could possibly have wanted, and a whole lot more glorious goodness. It was very difficult not to just go to page one and read it all over again... but given it was 3am, I thought it best to get some sleep – but only just.

Utterly wonderful, go get yourself some of the goodness!

Angie☆☆☆☆☆
This is obviously not a stand-alone book. You should read the entire Confessions series and even the Temptations series to really enjoy everything to the fullest. Ella Frank is one of the few authors who can actually make me feel like I am right there in the moment and in the story living it right along with the characters. I loved this series; each book was just amazing and learning about each man in their book added more layers to their character. I hate to see this series end, but I am hopeful we will get a bonus novella or something in the future, but I look forward to future series because I am sure they will be just as awesome. Bailey and Henri were so smoking hot. I am a firm believer in opposites attract. I kept waiting for something horrible to happen or for the other shoe to drop… I will let you find out if any of that happened or not. Make sure you have a glass of ice water next to you while you read, you will get hot and you'll need to cool off.

Sarah☆☆☆☆
This is a sweet and steamy read about the unlikely connection that grows between two very different men. A cop from a family of cops, Bailey has always had a strong moral compass and an uncomplicated sense of identity. In contrast, Henri’s ruthlessness and flexible morality has allowed him to survive an unthinkable childhood – and to protect the people he loved. The connection between these two is explosive, but it will take a great deal of honesty, compassion, and compromise before Bailey and Henri can make a life together.

I enjoyed the balance of romance and action in this story. Henri’s undercover work is exciting, and Bailey’s experiences are traumatic. At the same time, there are some decadent and luxurious romantic moments that keep the story light. It’s definitely a steamy read – but not necessarily as steamy as some of Ella Frank’s other books.

There is less angst in this story than in pretty much anything else I’ve read by this author. Bailey and Henri talk to each other like adults and with more than enough genuine problems, neither man has any interest in tantrums or exaggerated miscommunication. These two feel like grownups and the lack of drama between them makes them both more likeable.

One thing that did make my head spin a little was Henri’s extravagant lifestyle. For a PI who seems to spend most of his time working for a cop, readers don’t ever get an explanation for his extreme wealth. Ella Frank fans expect her men to be glamorous and wealthy – but usually we get an explanation.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is such a fun book, with some very moving moments too – so it is great news that it is part of a new series. And I am all for stories about men who have the wisdom to read romance books to work out how women think and how they perceive men. This particular bunch are a fun mix of wealthy, happily married, players and hopefuls – which should give us plenty of fun in future installments.

The first man in need of help is Gavin – his marriage has taken a dive, he is living in a rubbish hotel and drowning his sorrows, until an intervention by his friends who induct him into the Bromance Book Club. The only problem is that Gavin is deeply ashamed about why his marriage is on the rocks and just cannot bring himself to admit the cause, so he seriously hampers their attempts to help. It does, however, make it much funnier for the reader as he gets himself tied up in knots about it.

As we see things from both his and his wife, Thea's side, it is easy to believe that there is a chance for success, although Thea's sister, Liv, and their upbringing is clearly also a significant issue that needs to be addressed. I loved the twins and their importance to both parents in finding a way to move forward. And of course, most of all, the romance novel which helps Gavin see things differently, and gives him a whole new vocabulary of hilarious words to call himself!

I think this is a winning formula, and as we are given a clue as to who is going to be the next man that gets help towards a happily ever after, I am waiting expectantly for the next installment.

Veronica☆☆☆☆
The story starts with Gavin’s mate, Del, arriving at the crappy hotel he is staying in to stage an intervention. Gavin’s wife has kicked him out and asked for a divorce. Del, with several members of the Bromance Book Club, tell Gavin they are going to help him save his marriage through romance novels. We read parts of the novel with Gavin and we kind of get a novel within a novel, which was fun. I have to say the scenes of this book with the members of the book club are thoroughly entertaining.

When we meet Gavin’s wife, Thea, things with her seem more serious. She is taking care of their twin daughters with the help of her sister, applying to return to college, and wanting to get her life back on track without Gavin. Girl power is the order of the day. I had no idea how Gavin was ever going to win her back because she seemed determined not to give him the time of day. Having her sister in her ear the whole time, putting Gavin down at every opportunity, wasn’t helping either.

Gavin’s fight to win Thea back was at times sexy and romantic and at other times raw and emotional. Parts were challenging to read. They are confronting some really embarrassing and difficult issues. I particularly struggled with the feeling that the blame for their issues lay at Gavin’s feet. It takes two people to make a marriage and neither of them was perfect, and it is glaringly obvious that Thea has her own issues to confront.

This is such a good story. It has a mix of heavy and light subject matter and it does an excellent job of showing us a marriage isn’t all wine and roses, it takes work. This year I’ve struggled with reading contemporary M/F romance and with The Bromance Book Club, I feel like I’ve fallen back in love with the genre, so the author gets a big thank you from me.

Lyssa Kay Adams read her first romance novel in eighth grade after swiping one from her grandmother’s book shelf and was hooked forever. From New York Times Bestselling Author, Kristen Proby, comes an all new paranormal romance set in the mystical city of New Orleans…

I am never alone. Not even when I am alone.

An unspeakable evil is loose in New Orleans, taking young women and leaving a bloodbath in his wake. More shadows lurking for me. More unhappy dead. There might be a way to stop it.
Open myself up to Cassian.
If I do, it could spell his death.

“As I was about to walk down the street, I turned, and there was a shadow on the sidewalk. Just standing there. I’ve never seen her before.”

Her?”

“Yeah, she was about my height. Very feminine.”

“Did she say anything?”

“Not that I heard. It just threw me because you know how careful I am about my route. I don’t like surprises, especially not like this. It’s creepy as hell. And, yes, I know I should be used to it by now, but—”

“It’s creepy, like you said.” She leans on the counter and bites her lip, thinking. “It probably means that someone recently died there.”

“I know that.”

“And now it’s a new spirit on your tour. Too bad she didn’t say anything. If she did, you could add it to your show. Could be fun. ‘Lucy was killed in this building three days ago, and her spirit now wanders the sidewalk in front of her former home.’

“Talk about creepy.”

I sigh and run my fingers through my hair. “Did you sweep this area recently?”

“Is the floor dirty?”

I look at her as if she’s being obtuse on purpose. “You know what I mean.”

“It’s been about a week.”

“You need to do it again.”

Millie frowns, looking around the space. Her shields are as strong as mine, maybe stronger because she doesn’t just see the dead, she feels them, and that’s much more dangerous.

She fiddles with the amethyst around her neck.

“What do you see?”

I narrow my eyes. “I shouldn’t tell you.”

“I don’t want to look, Bri. I dropped my guard for just a second earlier and was slammed with the pervy thoughts of a nineteen-year-old college kid who couldn’t take his eyes off my ass. So, just tell me. Is it the little girl again?”

“Yeah. And she brought a friend.” I reach over to take my sister’s hand. “Don’t drop your shields anymore, Mill. Not for a minute. Ever. I know we live and work here in the Quarter because it’s where we make our living, but it could really hurt us.”

“I know.”

“I couldn’t bear it if I lost you, too.”

Brielle and her sisters have always had gifts. Despite her mom being a terrible human being and their dad even worse, the sisters always had each other. When they were old enough, they left their haunted house and moved to a place where they were safe. Brielle is an amazing storyteller and she is even more amazing at seeing ghosts. What she isn't crazy about are the ghosts that are following her.

There is a terrible, dangerous person roaming her town and they will stop at nothing to get Brielle and her sisters to notice them. The dynamic of the mystery behind the story is gripping and haunting. You'll be on the edge of your seat and you'll look over your shoulder.

Cash is also an amazing character. I loved that he was so easily likeable. He accepted what Brielle told him and that was all there was to it. They had an easy romance – no angst or miscommunication. He was willing to accept what others might not and willing to do whatever he could to make sure Brielle was safe and out of harm’s way.

Proby hit it out of the park again. I loved this story and can't wait for more. Despite this being out of her comfort zone, Proby didn't disappoint. This book had the same family feel and the characters were well thought out and easily relatable.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆☆
Oh what a great start to a new series by the talented Kristen Proby. I have always thought her books to be magical, but this time she has given us full on magic! Possibly even better, we have a clear indication of who will feature in future installments of this paranormal romance series. It felt like Proby was having fun with this book, and I loved the vibe throughout the book.

As a first book, we get world building, but just enough to be useful and not at the expense of the sweet and sexy story. Cash is a great new male lead and his relationship with Brielle is wonderfully refreshing as he at no time questions her experiences or those of her sisters. He doesn't judge, doesn't question, and is only ever keen to learn and support. It would seem he is not hard on the eyes either! His career had made him observant, but he is also open-minded, and thankfully has the contacts needed to help solve the mystery.

I love Brielle and her sisters – close to each other, but accepting of change – and the rest of their 'family.' I am so excited to read the next book and find out how they move forward now that there is some resolution in their family story. I also found the idea of shadows and how they affected her mental health to be an intriguing way of thinking about how we can be brought down by the things in our heads.

A book which combines mystery, magic, and love with great style and aplomb. Thank you, Kristen Proby, for finding time to write some paranormal romance – it was time well spent!

Kristen was born and raised in a small resort town in her beloved Montana. In her mid-twenties, she decided to stretch her wings and move to the Pacific Northwest, where she made her home for more than a dozen years.

During that time, Kristen wrote many romance novels and joined organizations such as RWA and other small writing groups. She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.

It took me a bit to get into the story. I felt like I was missing something, like there was a previous book that I hadn't read. Once I finally got into the story, I enjoyed it. It was funny and full of love. I liked Akio, Vincente, and Ian – once he established his role. This wasn't your average vampire/paranormal book, but it was good. I think if I would have had some backstory to this couple, I would have loved it.

5 Long-Anticipated Stars

Spoiler-Free Review to my best abilities.

After how Dark Queen left readers up in the air as to what happened to a beloved character and as to how Jane was handling her new situation, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Shattered Bonds. Seriously, I was pestery and stalking a release date, so eager to see what happens next.

It goes without saying, Shattered Bonds cannot be read as a standalone or out of series order. A few of the books in the middle of the pack could be read or missed without confusion, but this novel reads more like a continuation.

Jane is in hiding, mourning heavy losses, while suffering from a magical form of cancer growing in her center. Escaping her duty in New Orleans because the grief is heavy, she's created a new base of operation just outside of Asheville in the mountains, where she purchased an inn to accommodate her people. A few months have passed since the conclusion of Dark Queen, and it's all about to hit the fan.

The Dark Queen hasn't picked up her mantle, effectively destroying her power base, while she mourns and suffers. Several of her people go missing, her primo is being tortured, all because the SOD has a baby brother that she never knew existed, and he's out for blood, looking for his brother/the return of whatever is left of the SOD, after Brut tore it bit from bit.

The majority of the novel is Jane suffering from cancer, terrified over what that means in the long-run. Able to not deteriorate when shaped as Beast or when in half-form. Jane as Jane is dying by the second. Rallying the troops, Jane puts on her crown and gets down to business, attempting to protect her people from the new baddie invading their territory.

What is so different this time around, Jane isn't necessarily in charge. In the past, even when she wasn't in charge, she fought to take control. During Shattered Bonds, Jane learns to delegate, to trust and respect her people to do what needs to be done, so she can take care of herself and save what little strength she has left. It's a new side of Jane – a vulnerable side.

I planned on reading this novel slowly, simply because it was such a long wait from the previous installment. I wanted to savor it. However, no matter how much I love the characters, maybe because of that actually, I had a hard time reading. I struggled with the content, watching Jane suffer, finding only small moments of ironic humor from beast and the deep connection Jane has with her family. There were often so many characters within a scene, it got chaotic and confusing for me to read and enjoy. The major issue was the stress I was feeling while reading a character suffer.

Dark. Much darker than the previous books.

Here is where I refuse to provide spoilers, because it's yet another stellar ending, taking the series in a new direction, one I cannot wait to experience.

Highly recommend for series fans and fans of the author. For those looking for a solid urban fantasy series where you can trust the author to stay true to the story and characters she's written, go back to the beginning and start with Skinwalker (I've reread it 4 times, just as entertaining each time as the last).
