Dark Queen by Faith Hunter

Jane Yellowrock used to hunt vampires, but now she must fight–and win–beside them.

As Enforcer to the vampire Master of the City of New Orleans, Jane Yellowrock stakes her reputation and her life on keeping her territory safe. But Leo has been issued a blood challenge by the emperor of the European vampires, who seeks to usurp all of his power and possessions. If Leo loses the match to the death, the city will be forfeit, and the people of New Orleans will suffer the consequences. Jane can't let that happen.

Preparing for the duel requires all of Jane's focus, but with so much supernatural power in play, nothing goes according to plan. She has to rely on herself and the very few people she knows she can trust to stand and fight. Only two things are guaranteed: nothing is sacred, and no one is safe.

Erica☆☆☆☆
First and foremost, Dark Queen is not a standalone – don't even attempt to read it out of series order. As a fan of the series, I've read the beginning books three times over, and even I was confused for a large portion of Dark Queen – there's no way to read it out of order and get heads or tails.

Knowing there will be a long wait until the next release, I went into reading with the mindset to savor, reading a few chapters a day for the past week or so. I will say, this may have contributed to the slower-paced feel that I experienced.

Dark Queen is a long book, but it reads even longer. I'm not sure I could have binged on the book from start to finish in a single sitting. There is so much going on, yet so little, as Jane hurried up only to wait for the duel. The entire novel, hundreds of pages, are inane details as the setup to the duel in the last quarter.

This will sound conflicted, but I felt as if there was too much yet not enough going on. Too much, as in there were hundreds of characters name-dropped from page to page, their histories given, that it didn't flow fluidly, yet nothing was truly going on story-wise. This set a molasses slow pace, only for it to go into warp-speed once the duel started. It was jarring in the extreme.

So quick, that I have no idea how the duel even started early, with the weapons being drawn and blood spilled during their reception. I reread that portion four times, and it never was explained. From one sentence to the next, the book changed, and I was beyond confused.

I won't give any spoilers, but there was a dark, depressive feel for the entire novel. After its completion, I can say it had depressed me personally. The author put the DARK in Dark Queen, and it's a mark of good writing how it affected my mood.

I was excited to see a new thread for Jane, of a family member coming in who was previously unknown. This gave a plethora of emotions for the reader to experience via Jane. As always, I appreciated the Native American customs, something that is nearly impossible to find in books.

Jane's connection to everyone in the series is the highlight, especially her familial connection forged with Eli. It's sweet, endearing, and feels beyond realistic, showcasing how empathetic and compassionate Jane truly is.

Rick is back!

I was so excited to see Rick pop back up on the pages, only for him to do a small cameo, while still in NOLA. The reader gets to see very little of Rick. This isn't my odd way of wishing Jane and Rick would get back together, as I love how romance takes a backseat to the vampire politics, butt kicking, and paranormal elements. I just enjoy watching both Jane and Rick squirm when around one another.

As always, Beast's voice is by far the most entertaining thing I've ever read. I'd love more of her, with the innovated way she views the world. I always applaud the author for creating such a unique voice for Jane's other half.

Request: Give Beast and Jane some kits and a mate.

Highly recommend to fans of Faith Hunter and the Jane Yellowrock series. For Urban Fantasy fans, this series is one of the top ones I recommend, but start at the beginning.

I'll be holding my breath for the next book, trusting the author to do the character's justice – I can't get the book fast enough, as the series is balancing on a knife's blade, everything up in the air, with a new story arc created.

Medley by Layla Reyne

Sebastian Stewart was never Mr. Dependable; he was more the good-time guy who only wanted to swim, party, and ink tattoos. Until he cost his team the Olympic gold four years ago. Bas is determined to do right this time around—by his medley relay team and his rookie mentee.

Jacob Burrows is in over his head. The Olympic experience—from the hazing, to the endless practices, to the unrelenting media—makes the shy nineteen-year-old’s head spin. He’s trying to be everything to everyone while trying not to fall for his gorgeous tattooed teammate who just gets him—gets his need to fix things, his dorky pirate quips, and his bisexuality.

When Jacob falters under the stress, threatening his individual races and the medley relay gold, he needs Bas’s help to escape from drowning. Bas, however, fearing a repeat of his mistakes four years ago, pushes Jacob away, sure he’ll only let Jacob down. But the only path to salvaging gold is for Jacob to finally ask for what he needs—the heart of the man he loves—and for Bas to become the dependable one.

Veronica☆☆☆☆
Bas is a veteran of the US Olympic swim team and has taken Jacob, affectionately known as Pup, under his wing. Jacob is selfless, always helping others and while he is young, he is wise beyond his years. Bas just wants to take care of him but after messing up at the last Olympics, he won't let himself get involved in a relationship with Jacob.

I found this to be an emotionally charged story and with plenty of drama, something I don't always want in an m/m story but it works well here given the characters’ ages and the high-pressure world they inhabit. I loved Jacob's vulnerable side and his willingness to give to others. On the other side, I loved Bas' protective nature and there was never any question that he and Jacob are a perfect fit.

The only thing I would have liked more of in this story is the actual swimming but that is just the sports fan in me. I loved the emotional whirlwind of Medley and I hope the author plans to write more in this series because I want to spend more time with these characters.

Rome's Chance by Joanna Wylde Blog Tour

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Joanna Wylde comes a new story in her Reapers MC series…

Rome McGuire knew he was in trouble the first time he saw her.

She was sweet and pretty and just about perfect in every way. She was also too young and innocent for the Reapers Motorcycle Club. He did the right thing, and walked away.

The second time, he couldn’t resist tasting her.

Gorgeous and smart, fun and full of wonder, she jumped on his bike and would’ve followed him anywhere. Still, she deserved a shot at happiness somewhere bigger and better than a town like Hallies Falls. Walking away wasn’t so easy that time, but her family needed her and he had a job to do.

When she came around a third time, he’d had enough. Randi Whittaker had been given two chances to escape, and now it was time for Rome to take his.

This time, the only way Randi would be leaving Hallies Falls was on the back of Rome’s bike.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

I couldn’t figure out what’d happened.

One minute I’d been having one of the most exciting sexual experiences of my life. The next my ribs were being crushed as Rome slammed into me. Then I was on my feet, trying to catch my breath, as people shouted all around us. The music had stopped. Thankfully, Rome’s big body formed a barrier between me and the rest of the room, because everyone else in the place had lost their minds.

For an instant, I thought maybe I’d be safe behind him. Then some guy in a cowboy hat launched toward us, fists flying. I don’t know what I expected, maybe that Rome would start punching him—you know, like they always do in movies—but instead he ducked, then started dragging me toward the bar. More shouting. I saw a man lift a chair and slam it down against another guy’s back from behind. The poor bastard went down hard, so hard that his head literally bounced on the floor. He couldn’t even get his hands up in time to break the fall.

This definitely wasn’t a movie.

I needed to get the hell out of here. Now.

Rome didn’t need to drag me any more—adrenaline had set in and sexy times were forgotten. My instincts said to run, and I wasn’t going to argue. Running wasn’t really possible, though, what with people and bottles and tables flying all around us.

It felt like it took an hour just to get across the room, although it was probably just a few seconds. Nothing touched me. Every other step, he was pushing me to the side, standing over me, or slamming into someone to get them out of the way until we reached an opening at the far end of the bar. He shoved me down behind it, toward a group of women huddling under the safety of the ledge.

“Stay here and keep your head down!” he said, catching my eyes to make sure I heard him. “I’ll be back soon.”

With that, he left to wade back into the crowd.

Rome's Chance is book 6.6 in the Reapers MC series. but it can be read as a standalone with no issues. I suggest reading the other books in the Reapers series just because they are amazing you need to experience them.

Rome's Chance was just enough of a Reaper to have me wanting more. Rome McGuire has been biding his time with Randi. The first time he met her, she was young and innocent. He walked away. The second time, the fires hit Hallies Falls and forced Randi and her family to run from her home. When Randi comes back for her high school reunion, Rome isn't letting her get away.

Rome is everything Randi remembers and more. He's sexy. He smells amazing and he's a Reaper now. Randi only plans to be in town for the weekend when she runs into Rome. So him asking her out has her body asking for things only Rome can give her. A one-night stand makes sense but when tragedy strikes, can Randi depend on Rome? Can Randi be the one for Rome?

I loved Rome. No one writes a sexy biker like Ms. Wylde. She has you swooning over them within a few chapters. Rome and Randi bond over similar experiences and the chemistry they have is off the charts. I loved Randi's snarky little sister Lexi. She's just what this quick read needed to break up Rome and Randi's intensity.

1001 Dark Nights are the perfect quick reads. They give you a quick peek at a new-to-you author or bring back your favorites with a little glimpse. This one has me begging for a new Reapers ASAP!

Veronica☆☆☆☆
Firstly, I have to say the conversation about David Bowie’s package had me talking to the book with lots of “No – really? I don’t remember that.” I ended up talking to my husband about it (he remembered Bowie’s package) and checking out clips on YouTube. How had I never noticed that? Anyway, let’s move on.

I think my favourite thing about Rome’s Chance is that shows Rome as so much more than a member of the Reapers MC. We really get to see different parts of Rome from his work to his hobbies and the guy just trying to get the girl. The Reapers are in the background for most of this story.

Randi was a down to earth, responsible woman and easy to relate to. In the short time we are with her so much happens in her life to change it completely and not all of it good. Her fun weekend to Hallies Falls to attend her high school reunion is not what she expected.

I loved Randi and Rome’s romance but for me, this story left me with serious thoughts I didn’t really want on a Monday morning but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Rome’s Chance is a solid addition to my favourite MC series and well worth reading.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This forms part of the Reapers MC series, but also stands well alone – and makes a good intro to all the goodness that is in that MC.

Though a short novel, we get to understand just how long Rome has been holding out for a relationship with Randi – and finally, he gets another chance. Sadly, there is a lot of complicated family stuff that Randi is facing, which makes their situation difficult once again. However, his persistence, his honesty, and his support show her a side to him that she did not expect. It is by turns very sweet, but also super hot. The change in tempo and in heat is well timed, and when Rome gets his chance, he shows that he is up for the task.

Strong, alpha males with big hearts are something of a feature in Ms. Wylde’s stories... thank goodness!

Her Claim by Rebecca Grace Allen

She’s no princess. He’s no prince. Then again, they never wanted a fairy tale.

Cassie Allbright takes no prisoners. A half Cuban ball-busting attorney, she’s too tough to admit what she wants in bed. But tough is the only way to cut it in her high-powered firm, and Cassie doesn’t need a knight in shining armor. And she definitely doesn’t need Patrick Dunham—an arrogant, chauvinistic man-whore with a knack for pissing her off.

Bound to the helm of his family’s publishing house, Patrick is shackled to a life of power and wealth he never wanted. Seduction is his only distraction—his nights of pleasure always temporary, because happily-ever-afters are not for him. But while luring a woman into his bed has always come easy, the high-and-mighty Cassie has never succumbed to his charms.

Their verbal sparring turns to foreplay, but instead of scratching an itch, it only whets their appetites. Patrick gives Cassie a taste of what she’s secretly craved, and Cassie’s dark desires stir up things Patrick never knew he wanted. Enchanted, he offers to fulfill her most dangerous fantasies. She agrees, with an iron-clad escape clause: her heart is off-limits, and so is his.

Funny thing about hearts, though. They have a way of ignoring the fine print.

Warning: This book isn’t for the faint of heart. Disclosure includes angry, vying-for-control hate sex and one steamy weekend in Miami. Ready? Break the caution tape and proceed.

Avid Reader☆☆☆☆
M/F BDSM – Romance
Triggers: Click
HERE to see Avid Reader’s review on Goodreads for trigger warnings.

This is the second book in this series and I would recommend that you read the first book, as there are a lot of the nuances between these two characters that start in book one.

Cassie is a take-no-prisoners attorney. She has worked her butt off in order to make partner. But when her chances at making partner are threatened, she buckles down and tries even harder. She seems to have a chip on her shoulder from the beginning, but it's only to hide what she desires most – to be taken, challenged, and shown that she's worth the fight.

Patrick is a tough nut. He seems confident, cocky, and just an all-around player – but it's more to hide the hatred he has for his father and the mistrust he has in women from a past relationship. He's a complicated guy who, when he sees Cassie, knows that he'll love the chase, challenge, and when he eventually gets the girl.

These two have a chemistry that borders on hatred. It was sometimes hard to differentiate between them hating each other and having such strong chemistry that they can't help but tear each other's clothes off.

Their relationship is more edge play than anything, but the scenes are hot and help show the reader exactly where it's okay and where they need to learn to trust each other. Without the trust, neither of them would make it very far in their relationship.

This had some great chemistry and the complexity of each character was enhanced by their intertwined automatic mistrust of people. When you drilled down into who each character was as an individual, you could see where the angst and unhappiness might spring from. But it was also where these two meshed the most – in their pasts – and that helped guide them to their future.

It was a great story where you got to see an almost enemy-to-friendship-to-lovers relationship develop, but without a lot of angst woven in. It was more about the chemistry and shared fantasy.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the second book in the series. I would say that you will understand more of the background if you read them in order, but this definitely stands strong as a book in its own right too. They are both very good stories, so why miss out!

Cassie is a fabulous character – she is a wonderful mix of confident and vulnerable. She has made a life for herself away from her loud American-Cuban family in Florida and works all hours in her ambition to make partner in a law firm in Boston. She is good friends with Lilly, who is the lead in the first book in the series. Nearing forty, her mother is keen for her to settle down and have a family, but she is really uncertain about that being the future she wants, or if she can find someone she would even want to do that with...

Patrick is friends with Jack, Lilly's boyfriend, so when the group socialise, he gets to know Cassie. Or not know her, as he is too busy being a playboy. We do find out why he behaves this way, and why the sparks fly between the two of them whenever they are together.

I love the setup and watching the two of them finally get with the programme. They are completely in sync and though her fantasies are not mine, they clearly work for Patrick too. I felt that the issues were addressed with care, and certainly enhanced their closeness, and demonstrated Patrick's care for her.

A good mix of hot, passionate action, developing feelings, and real-life twists and turns – thank you, Ms. Allen.

This is the fifth book in this engaging series and gives Jamie his chance at happiness. He is increasingly surrounded by happy couples, and Friday evenings have become even more tortuous than before Liam found his man.

A great, dramatic start to a book, with super strong Max holding up a car, as Jamie rescues the driver. An explosive start, which leads to a real crime being uncovered by the local police. Once the situation settles, Jamie has found that the driver is maybe someone he could become close to, but is survivor thanks the only link between them? I enjoyed the ongoing avoidance of Friday evenings, but also the realisation that things maybe on the change. Some fun misunderstandings along the way too.

We are also brought up to date on progress for the veteran's halfway house that the men are busy getting ready – there is a resident... and a strong hint that he will be getting his happily ever after very soon.

Another good addition to the series, with a slant away from the cabins for a change.

RJ’s goal is to write stories with a heart of romance, a troubled road to reach happiness, and most importantly, that hint of a happily ever after.

Leaning into Touch by Lane Hayes Audiobook Release Blitz

Josh Sheehan is unlucky in love and now… newly unemployed. He’s not sure what to do next, but he’s sure he should give up on romance. Especially after last time. His friends warned him that falling for the hunky Irishman was a bad idea. Josh can’t help feeling torn even though he knows it’s best to move on. But when an unexpected dose of family drama blindsides him, Josh finds himself leaning on the one man he’s supposed to forget.

Finn Gallagher is driven by success. He makes no secret that building a name for his tech company is his number one goal. Finn left home a decade ago with a ton of regret, a heavy heart, and a vow to never repeat the same mistake twice. However, there is something undeniably appealing about the self-deprecating man with the silly sense of humor that makes it difficult for Finn to remember why falling for Josh is a bad idea. It soon becomes clear they’re both in deeper than they intended. There is no way to remain untouched. And there is so much to gain, if they’re brave enough to lean in.

I cannot recall the last time I was interrupted so many times while trying to listen to an audiobook – some people are very lucky I didn’t have weapons handy. In fact, it took me three days to listen to Leaning into Touch and none of that had to do with the story or the narration, but rather life intruding upon my time. Each time I was interrupted, I couldn’t get back to the audiobook soon enough because not only was I intrigued by Finn, the mysterious Irishman, but I was fascinated by just how open of a character Josh was.

Having re-listened to the previous audiobooks in the series prior to starting Leaning into Touch, I realized that Josh is quite possibly the most “what you see is what you get” guy in the tight-knit group of friends – with the exception of his relationship with Finn. Any layer of mystery to Josh is due to him not having figured out that part of his life yet, not because he’s hiding something. He’s a rather refreshing character because he’s so earnest in who he is with his family and friends. Were it not for Eric and Nick’s negative opinion of Finn, I suspect he would have shared his relationship highs and lows with his friends as he had little problem talking about it with his roommate, Grant. As for Finn, the man has been an enigma since his introduction to the series and his seemingly less-than-ethical business practices have merely added to his mysterious persona. Yet, I was woefully unprepared to learn about the ghosts who haunt him. I don’t make a habit of trying to figure out the wounded hero’s baggage while reading or listening to their story, but I would have never come close to guessing Finn’s – which made it so easy for me to understand Josh’s gut-punch reaction to Finn’s revelations. Between Finn’s guilt, Josh’s realization of his need to protect his heart and the steps he takes to do so, and the WHOA! drama that plays out with Josh’s parents, Leaning into Touch was an entertaining rollercoaster ride of a listen. But as expected, Lane provides the perfect happy ending for Josh and Finn that made it worth each heartbreaking moment.

Once again, Nick J. Russo provides a fabulous narrative performance. Having had different narrators for Eric’s story (Clayton) and Nick’s story (Russo), I wasn’t sure what to expect having Russo return to the mic for Josh and Finn’s story. However, having the consistency in Finn’s accent from Nick’s book to Leaning into Touch was perfect – especially as Josh and Finn met in Leaning into the Fall. Not only does Russo make Finn’s Irish accent sexy as can be, but he does a wonderful job at conveying Josh’s raw emotions and vulnerabilities when his world seems to come crashing down around him. There were moments when I wanted to cry for Josh because it was as if I could feel his heart actually breaking and I’m not talking about just his relationship with Finn. I won’t go into those particular scenes because they’re ones I believe each listener should experience for themselves, but Russo’s performance made Lane’s writing even more poignant. Leaning into Touch was an extremely enjoyable audiobook experience that has left me looking forward to the release of the next audiobook in the series as well as more of Lane’s writing and Russo’s narration.

Nick is an award winning narrator with a fan following for his work in fiction, specifically in the romance genre. His performances in two of Amy Lane's books, Beneath the Stain and Christmas Kitsch, made him the recipient of Sinfully M/M Book Review's Narrator of the Year – 2015. When he's not in the booth, Nick enjoys spending time with his wife, Jessica, and kids, (aka their beagle Frank and cat Stella), drumming in his cover band, exploring rural back roads with his wife on his motorcycle, or being enthralled in a tabletop role playing game with his friends.
