This is an absolutely lovely read – I laughed so many times, had a few tears, and just wished I could meet Vera and Linc and the rest of the clan. I loved that Toni Aleo brought us a lesser used sport (lacrosse) into the book, and enabled the bonding of the boys to happen over their mutual love and enjoyment of the game.

The story is really sweet, sexy, and the smooth writing style makes for super easy reading – but what really sets it apart is the wonderful humour, the attention to detail, and the clear chemistry between Vera and Lincoln. They had a difficult time with their roles and responsibilities in the beginning, but the trust and respect was there from the get go, and those two attributes are undoubtedly essential to see these two to the place where they need to be.

I highly recommend that you grab a copy and enjoy a really fun read.

What do you do when your marriage is over because you ex-husband has left with the nanny? You get yourself a Manny. Someone to help with three boys that are angry and hurt because their father has left them. Vera was looking for a female nanny but after many failed attempts, her sister brings over the perfect nanny. Well he is a man, so you can't call him a nanny, he is a manny.

Lincoln is a manny and loves what he does. He loves kids and being part of their lives. When the family he is with moves way, he has to decide what he wants to do. Does he put his degree to work or does he look for another family with children? When his best friend’s wife suggests he work for her sister because they really need him.

When Lincoln and Vera see each other, there are sparks but both want to deny it. Because she needs a manny and he needs a job.

How long can they deny their feelings for each other? Will her boys have a problem with them dating? When will her ex have to say about it?

I loved the way Vera was with her boys but hated how her ex treated her when he was the one that caused the problems. This story will have you laughing and crying, and you will not want it to end.

This is the third, I think, in the Misadventures series that I have read, and I have loved them all. So sit back and enjoy Vera, Lincoln, and the boys’ story, you will not be disappointed.

Having been a big Assassins fan, I was delighted to get the chance to read this book – but have not read the previous books in the series. I am a huge sports romance fan but have to admit I do not read much young adult, which I would definitely say this was for the most part. This is a substantial read and would be a thick book in print.

We get to watch Sofia in her first year at college, and Ryan in his last. She is very innocent due to spending her every waking moment training as a gymnast. He has had no serious relationships, but a college life full of experiences. That is, until he sees Sofia and is hooked. I enjoyed that we get to see part of the life of a gymnast as well as a hockey player’s – as well as the family times when we get to catch up with Shea and Elli.

There are some really interesting themes around expectations, motivations, and dreams, which I thought were handled really well. We generally only see one version of what success means, and this book deals with those issues in a sensitive and clever way. The shadow of Amelia and Drew and their separation due to sport, is a worthy foil to Sofia and Ryan.

I did find myself tearing up at some of the scenes, because I am sentimental! And because they were sweet and what every teenage girl wants from her first love... but very rarely gets.

I also laughed, a lot. There are some very funny moments which are beautifully understated and the timing is perfect!

All in all, an entertaining read. I did feel there could have been a little less inner voice but then, teenage angst and confusion also need it.

A cute read with a little hockey thrown in. It’s not hockey heavy as most of Ms. Aleo's books usually are, but it's well worth the afternoon of reading.

Both Gus and Bo are well developed characters and easy to relate to. The obstacles in their path are not insurmountable, but it does take time and effort to make sure both parties are on the same path.

Brie snickered as Vaughn went on. “I know this is going to be hard. Like, really hard on you. But, buddy, I’m sorry to say, we bought a house.”

Jensen just stared back at him. “Okay? Why is this hard?”

“Because you’re not moving with us.”

He rolled his eyes. “Jo, we haven’t lived together for six months since you moved in with Brie.”

“I know, but we were across the hall.”

Jensen laughed. “I’ll be fine without you guys—”

“Now, I know this comes as a shock, but we’re having a baby, and we need space for us and the baby.”

“I know—”

“Now, Jenny, I know this is going to be difficult, putting space between us—”

“You know we lived apart for years, right?”

But Vaughn went on. “Just know I will always and forever love you as my brother, and nothing will change. Not the space, the new ball and chain, or the baby.”

“Are you done?”

Brie apparently thought this was hilarious since she was basically choking she was laughing so hard. Which wasn’t anything new. Vaughn might be an idiot, but he was a funny one. As always, Vaughn was unaffected as he said, “We’ll never be done, Jenny, never.”

“Okay,” Jensen said, rolling his eyes again. “Listen, this is awesome. I’m happy for you guys, and let me know when we need to start moving stuff.”

“You’re such a good man,” Vaughn proclaimed before clapping his hands together. “This weekend good for you?”

Laughing, he just shook his head at Vaughn’s antics. “Yeah, man.”

“Thanks, Jensen.”

He smiled over at Brie. “Anytime.”

Rolling his eyes, he went back to eating as a grin played on his lips. He wanted nothing more than for his friend to grow and be in love. Brie was that for Vaughn. They were moving and having a kid, and it was great. Vaughn needed that. So did Wells, who was getting married the following month. Both his best friends were living life, happily and to its fullest. Meanwhile, Jensen was stuck.

He didn’t know how it happened, or even why, but it had. He wasn’t interested in anyone he met, and he didn’t just want to fuck around. He wanted someone to love him for him. The quiet, weird guy in the corner. The one who would lay down his life for anyone he loved. He had redeemable qualities, but for some reason, no one wanted them. They just wanted to have sex.

He didn’t want Netflix and chill; he wanted Netflix and breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and more.

Hmm, he should copyright that.

Taking a huge bite of his chicken, he felt his phone start to vibrate. He pulled it out, seeing that it was a text from Wren, as he chewed. Like always when she texted him, his heart sped up, and his palms went clammy as a lump formed in his throat. Or maybe that was the chicken, he wasn’t sure. Either way, he slid the notification over so that his text thread with her opened up before he read her message.

Wren: Are you free anytime this week?

Growing up in a family that's all about hockey, it was easy for Wren to get lost. Her brother, Wells, and then his friends, Vaughn and Jensen, loved hockey and her parents did everything they could to support his dreams. Did it really matter than Wren felt lost? Not really; after all, she knew how to take care of herself.

Jensen agrees to help Wren, but only if she truly gives their relationship an honest try. Wren doesn't understand why Jensen wants this until after all her friends tell her that he's been in love with her for years. With her self-confidence issues, she doesn't believe that Jensen will want her for the long-term, especially if he finds out the truth about the baby's paternity.

The issues that face both Wren and Jensen seem to be insurmountable, but as Ms. Aleo shows once again, with love anything is possible.

4.5 stars of sexy, sensual, and supportive hotness

This may be book 12 in an established series, but do not be afraid to pick it up and read it as a standalone. It will probably tempt you to go back and read more, but it will not spoil the enjoyment of this series at all.

All the characters who appear are given enough back story to become real to a new reader, but give subtle details to the seasoned fan too. There are some lovely touches – like Elli being at every team members' big day, even though that means a lot of travel post season. We get a really good sense of the team spirit and particularly the camaraderie between Jenson, Vaughn, and Wells since they were teenagers... and Wren.

As the plot unfolds and the drama ramps up between Jensen and Wren, it is fascinating to watch a story which reverses the norms and gives us a very different view of things when stereotypes are destroyed. It is powerful in that message, but also hugely romantic and heartwarming. There are a lot of times when I really wanted to sit them both down together and have a word... but even when their friends tried to do just that, they were still stuck in their own realities. Wren being a therapist and overanalysing things so much was a great twist in the tale.

Be prepared for some frustrating moments, some heart wrenching ones, and some truly blissful ones... but definitely pick this up and give in to the call of a very enjoyable read.

Where to start? First, I want to thank the author for taking a break from writing contemporary romances (Go Assassins!) to try her hand at writing paranormal romance, because I really, really enjoyed Pieces. Second, I want to thank her for including the oft forgotten shapeshifter – the kind that can shift into any being, including other people as long as they make contact with the person whose form they’re assuming. While I can think of a few movies and shows that include this type of shapeshifter, I can only think of one book with such a character and that guy was actually the hobgoblin, not a true shapeshifter. So that alone made Pieces a unique read for me. But Aleo didn't stop there, because she made sure that Rebekah was such a fascinating character all on her own, that the only thing that made me put my Kindle down was the dire need to be a responsible adult.

As the blurb states, Rebekah is a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein. I’ll admit upfront, I am not well-versed on the Frankenstein legend, so except for knowing that the creature we call Frankenstein is actually Frankenstein’s monster, while it is the doctor who is Frankenstein, I cannot comment as to how much of Rebekah’s family’s history coincides with the legend and how much of it is Aleo’s creation. Truth be told, from an entertainment perspective, I don’t really care because it’s fascinating either way. However, it does mean that I can’t properly give the author her due for the parts that are her creation, because while I suspect that the twists I enjoyed the most are hers, I just don’t know. That said, the Works itself is the world that Aleo has created and I fell in love with it. Set in New York City, each of the five species – the Patchwork, shifters, werewolves, vampires, and witches – seems to inhabit a separate borough. But the different factions are separated by more than just geographical boundaries as the rules that govern them dictate that the races aren’t allowed to mix in matters of procreation. But we learn that it has less to do with purification of the races, and far more to do with the potential of the hybrid offspring. As the leader of the Works, Rebekah’s father goes to great lengths to insure the rules are followed and that his people, the Patchwork, remain the most powerful among the supernatural beings. Yet despite all his efforts, his daughter remains mortal (<= not really a spoiler because it’s revealed in the first couple of pages, which you can download in a sample). The crux of this installment is Rebekah trying to convince her father that she is a responsible adult who needs some freedom, all while engaging in behaviors that contradict her claim because she’s being suffocated in the name of protection. Her situation is made worse by the discovery of a conspiracy to kidnap her as leverage to force her father to make the leader of the wolves immortal. Just as her defenses should be on high alert, the new employee at the bar manages to make it past her defenses with no effort – she trusts him completely when everyone around her is telling her to trust no one. And when we finally find out why, it made for an awesome twist.

One thing I feel I should “warn” readers about is that while Rebekah might not be fully human (by our standards), she's like most 20 year olds, and that translates into a good dose of new adult angst – not something I encounter very often in paranormal romances. For me, this just helped to emphasize that despite her father's efforts, Rebekah really is a human girl, and that helped me to connect with her character. Despite the dangers she faces, the trappings of who she is in their society, the restrictions on what she can and cannot do, and her personal insecurities, she is ultimately just a girl in love with a boy. Is she rebellious? Absolutely. Does she put herself in harm's way? Oh, yes she does. But three years of being told what to do, not being allowed to leave the family's property, and not being told WHY, would grate on most anyone's nerves and lead them to be a bit reckless, too. Fortunately for Rebekah, she seems to possess good instincts, and actually listens to them. Because of the new adult feel to the book, parts of the storyline are kind of predictable. I don’t mean the predictable where you know exactly how the story is going to play out, but rather the type of predictable where you figure something out before Rebekah does simply because you’re not the 20 year-old whose world has been tipped on its axis. It doesn’t occur often, but it did cause me to want to throttle Rebekah and tell her to grow up, even though that wasn’t fair considering her situation. And it didn’t decrease my enjoyment any. Unfortunately for this reader, Pieces’ ending came far too quickly, and while the ending is not the kind of cliffhanger that left me screaming in frustration, it did leaving me dying for book two. Thankfully, Aleo is a pretty productive writer, so I'm really hoping that the monsters of the Works are already pounding on her muse's door.

Each time I pick up a book by Toni Aleo, I know I'm in for a helluva ride and this book was no exception. The characters that she creates are infused with such a sense of realism that you can't help but root for them, even though they are flawed.

The angst she created concerning Lucy and Angie is a very real struggle that people face and I feel that she wrote it eloquently. Benji's troubled past is also written in a way that shows the struggle and pain that he went through to become a better person.

Lucy and Benji's story is real in the sense that it takes two imperfect people and shows how a lot of determination and a little luck can lead to something worthwhile.

Oh, and there's also a little hockey thrown in and visits from some of my favorite Assassins.
