Resist by Missy Johnson

In this sizzling short novel from New York Times bestselling author Missy Johnson, a young journalist goes undercover in a world of desire—and gets seduced by the billionaire bachelor she’s supposed to be chasing.

Recent college grad Charlotte Lucas thinks she has found her breakout story. It all begins when she answers a provocative want ad posted by a secretive mogul who happens to be a prime suspect in his girlfriend’s disappearance. Young and inexperienced, Char has never been pushed to the limit—until their games take her to the very edge. Char has gone in looking for the truth, but now she’s in way too deep with a master who plays her body like it belongs to him.

Jaxon Murphy knows a lot more about Char than he lets on. Although the media has made him out to be a monster, he’s not about to come clean about his tormented past—at least not before he turns this good girl bad and sends her out to do his dirty work. After all, Jax didn’t make it to the top without breaking some rules. But as their play grows passionate and achingly real, Jax can’t resist taking a shot at something that’s bigger and more powerful than revenge: love.

Stephanie☆☆☆
As I started this short novel, I found it intriguing and suspenseful. I was instantly drawn to Jaxon's character. He's dark, vengeful, and incredibly sexy. So far, everything I'm instantly drawn to as a reader. However, I was a little disappointed how the story ended. I'm not sure if the author felt she needed to keep it short and tied up the story quickly, but I wish the end had more to it. I thought it felt rushed and it left me wanting to know more.

This short novel delves into the world of Jaxon Murphy, a billionaire with a tortured past. He lives to bring the person who destroyed it to justice, and has banished his humanity in the meantime. I found him to be a singularly unlikeable chap for a large part of the book. Charlotte, a journalism graduate in search of employment, chooses to work as his beck and call girl in the desires of getting a story which will make her name. This also is hardly the kind of woman that we tend to be cheering for...so it is an interesting mix! I am still uncertain as to how she can supply him with a résumé which does not include her degree subject – but it would spoil the plot.

That said there are some moments, especially when C gets in rather too deep, or her mouth gets her into trouble, which I really enjoyed. I was curious as to how it would be resolved, and was not disappointed.

Missy Johnson is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who lives in a small town in Victoria, Australia, with her husband and her confused pets (a dog who thinks that she is a cat, a cat who thinks he is a dog . . . you get the picture). When she’s not writing, she can usually be found looking for something to read.
