Resist by Missy Johnson

In this sizzling short novel from New York Times bestselling author Missy Johnson, a young journalist goes undercover in a world of desire—and gets seduced by the billionaire bachelor she’s supposed to be chasing.

Recent college grad Charlotte Lucas thinks she has found her breakout story. It all begins when she answers a provocative want ad posted by a secretive mogul who happens to be a prime suspect in his girlfriend’s disappearance. Young and inexperienced, Char has never been pushed to the limit—until their games take her to the very edge. Char has gone in looking for the truth, but now she’s in way too deep with a master who plays her body like it belongs to him.

Jaxon Murphy knows a lot more about Char than he lets on. Although the media has made him out to be a monster, he’s not about to come clean about his tormented past—at least not before he turns this good girl bad and sends her out to do his dirty work. After all, Jax didn’t make it to the top without breaking some rules. But as their play grows passionate and achingly real, Jax can’t resist taking a shot at something that’s bigger and more powerful than revenge: love.

Stephanie – ☆☆☆
As I started this short novel, I found it intriguing and suspenseful. I was instantly drawn to Jaxon's character. He's dark, vengeful, and incredibly sexy. So far, everything I'm instantly drawn to as a reader. However, I was a little disappointed how the story ended. I'm not sure if the author felt she needed to keep it short and tied up the story quickly, but I wish the end had more to it. I thought it felt rushed and it left me wanting to know more.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆
This short novel delves into the world of Jaxon Murphy, a billionaire with a tortured past. He lives to bring the person who destroyed it to justice, and has banished his humanity in the meantime. I found him to be a singularly unlikeable chap for a large part of the book. Charlotte, a journalism graduate in search of employment, chooses to work as his beck and call girl in the desires of getting a story which will make her name. This also is hardly the kind of woman that we tend to be cheering for...so it is an interesting mix! I am still uncertain as to how she can supply him with a résumé which does not include her degree subject – but it would spoil the plot.

That said there are some moments, especially when C gets in rather too deep, or her mouth gets her into trouble, which I really enjoyed. I was curious as to how it would be resolved, and was not disappointed.

Code of Honor by Missy Johnson Blog Tour

In a series debut for fans of Tracy Wolff and Sylvia Day, New York Times bestselling author Missy Johnson asks a burning question: What happens when love is undeniable—and taboo?

Pietro Gustovi is loyal, polished, and hard as stone, the kind of guy women want and men respect. At twenty-three, he’s survived tragedies that would break men twice his age. And he owes it all to his father’s closest friend, Giovanni Spontagio, who took him in as an orphaned teenager. Pietro would give his life for Giovanni . . . but his heart belongs to Giovanni’s daughter.

Raised in Chicago under the spotlight of power and privilege, Lucy Spontiago feels most alive on stage. Determined to become a prima ballerina, she escapes her father’s protective gaze long enough to audition for the ballet in New York City. Soon, however, Lucy realizes that she is not alone. Pietro is watching her back. And though he’s like a brother to her, Lucy cannot deny the thrill she feels knowing his eyes are on her.

Pietro could never betray his mentor by sleeping with his only child. But Lucy follows her passions, no matter how forbidden. Soon their nights are consumed by explosive, red-hot temptation—a dance that will expose shocking secrets and burn everything else to the ground.

It’s been nine days since my world collapsed. Exactly 214 hours since I lost everything. I remember every tiny detail about that day. I remember leaving the house that morning to the smell of freshly brewed coffee. My mother was already up and preparing a feast for supper that night. We were going to be celebrating, but they wouldn’t tell me what, and, as it turned out, I’d never know.

I remember joking with my father along the way to school about how I’d soon be old enough to do more in the family business. I remember arriving home just like every other day, only this time I was fifteen minutes later than usual after stopping off to buy a comic.

It turns out that fifteen minutes probably saved my life.

As I walked toward my house, I noticed a strange car parked in our driveway. Then I heard the shouting. Right away, I knew something wasn’t right. My mother’s voice rang out, terrified. I’ll never forget that sound as long as I live. Thinking fast, I’d crept up the side of the house to peer through the window, and what I saw will haunt me forever.

The sound of the bullet firing through the air ripped through my soul. I watched helplessly as my mother fell to the ground in a heap, blood pooling around her lifeless body. Her head was twisted, her eyes staring at me; only I could see it was too late.

She was gone.

I’d screamed, and for a split second, the killer’s steely brown eyes met mine before he ran out the front door and sped away in his car. I panicked and ran inside, where I found my father surrounded by blood in the hallway.

“Pietro?”

My attention snaps back to Giovanni, his voice pulling me out of my memories. My heart pounds as I try to focus on where we are. We’re parked in front of a sprawling mansion, bigger than any home I’ve seen before. I fixate on his kind gray eyes, trying to will myself to be strong, because men don’t cry. I’m fifteen now. I’m a man. And all I can think about is how disappointed my father would be if he saw me crying.

“This is where you live?” I mumble, pretending to care.

“This is where we live,” Giovanni corrects me. He sighs and reaches for his seatbelt, unclasping it. “Right now it may not feel like it, but you’re not alone, Pietro. I told your father many years ago that I would take care of you and I meant it. This is your home now. My family is your family.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it,” I say, the words sticking in my throat. I stare down at my hands in my lap, wishing I didn’t have to put on this front. I want to yell and scream, show the world how angry I am, but instead I hold it all in.

“Your father was a good man,” he adds, his expression solemn.

I find that hard to believe.

I knew little of what my father did, only that he had many enemies and many of his ventures were illegal in one way or another. Just like all the men in my family he’d been strongly involved with the Italian Mafia. I was too young to fully understand what that meant, only that it nearly always ended in death. What did that mean for me? Was I expected to try to carry on the Gustovi name? To imprint myself in my father’s world? I glance back at Giovanni. Can he tell how afraid of my future I am?

We get out of the car and I follow him inside, glancing around the huge entrance. Beautiful high ceilings and expensive décor catch my attention. It reminds me of a museum I visited the previous year for school. I shuffle my feet, almost scared to move, in case I mess something up.

My eyes dart toward a huge spiral staircase when I hear a feminine voice sing out. A young girl, maybe a year or two younger than me, floats down the stairs, her long dark hair hanging in waves behind her. She’s beautiful. Her flawless, silky skin radiates warmth and highlights her beaming smile.

“Daddy, I missed you,” she says, wrapping her arms around Giovanni. He laughs and lifts her up, planting a kiss on each of her cheeks. I find myself smiling at them, but inside I’m jealous of how close they are. I used to be close like that with my parents.

“And you must be Pietro,” she gushes, her bright eyes smiling. I’m taken aback by her warmth. She steps closer and throws her arms around my neck. I step back, both surprised by her attention and embarrassed at how my body reacts to her close proximity. I’m a fifteen-year-old boy and she’s beautiful. How could my body not react?

“Pietro, this is my daughter, Lucia.” Giovanni beams, and I realize he has the same wide smile as his daughter. He leans over and touches her face. “She’s been looking forward to meeting you.”

“I have,” she admits, her eyes lighting up. Her enthusiasm is infectious and I find myself smiling back. “Father doesn’t approve of most of my friends, so as you can probably tell, I’m very bored.”

“Lucia, we talked about this,” Giovanni mumbles. “When you can show me your friends are responsible enough not to go out all night drinking and taking drugs I’m more than happy to let you see them.”

“One time, Father. They were caught drinking one time!” I grin as she throws her hands up in frustration like a true Italian. I’m drawn to her fire and her passion. “Besides, I have seen some of your friends knock back a few drinks,” she grumbles.

“Last time I checked, my friends are not underage,” he fires back. He raises his eyebrows, suggesting that is the end of the conversation. Lucia shuts her mouth, her eyes narrowing as she shakes her head dramatically. Giovanni turns to me and pats me on the back. “Let me show you to your room, Pietro. I’m sure you must be tired after your long flight.”

“That would be good,” I say, throwing another glance at Lucia. “I could probably do with a nap.”

He takes my suitcase and starts up the stairs. I hurry to follow him, not wanting to make him wait. It’s like a light switch has been flicked in my head and I’m beginning to realize how lucky I am. Fifteen minutes earlier that horrible day and things could’ve turned out so differently. I wouldn’t be standing here, with a second chance at living my life.

But none of this changes the fact that someone took my parents from me. They’re gone and nobody other than me seems to care about finding who did this, not even the police. I thought of all people, Giovanni would be someone I could count on. Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t.

Someone will be held responsible.

I don’t care how long it takes me, I will find out who did this.
And when I do, I’ll make them pay.

Shannan – ☆☆☆
I am an avid Missy Johnson reader but this one just didn't live up to the hype. The blurb was what pulled me in, Mob interaction, taboo love, but in the end the story just didn't pull through.

Pietro watches the execution of his family at fifteen. He is then moved in with his father’s friend Giovanni. Pietro has an attraction to Lucy, Giovanni's daughter, the first time he sees her. Giovanni is insanely protective and watches every move Lucy makes. Lucy gets into a prestigious ballet school in New York and Giovanni sends Pietro to watch her. Things happen, Giovanni finds out.

Unfortunately the connection to the characters or between the characters just wasn't there for me. I was very bored and found I was forcing myself to finish.

Rachael – ☆☆☆
I really enjoyed this book. There was quite the chemistry between the characters as they both fight their feelings for each other.

I felt like there wasn't a whole lot of resolution in this book though. A lot of things are brought up, but nothing is confirmed or solved. Things are hinted at, but everyone just turns a blind shoulder so we never know for sure what her father is or isn't into as well as his parents.

I expected a lot more violence than there was. Pietro was supposed to be so hard and tough, but all we really see him do is work on his paper for school as he watched her from afar.

I wish we'd have gotten more of a connection between Pietro and Lucy when they were actually together instead of it feeling so rushed and emotionless... I felt their connection more when they were texting or talking on the phone or from inner thoughts of the characters.

Lucy complained about her friends not being there for her, but she didn't seem to really be there for her friends either. She wasn't as endearing as Pietro was to me.

I'll say there is a HUGE cliffy and I didn't care for that but I just hate them in general.

I'd read the next book just in the hope that we finally get all the answers that were kept from us in this one.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆
This is an interesting read ... with a cliffhanger, and possibly a long wait until the resolution – which is a bit frustrating! I liked the premise of the story, but was not convinced by some of the scenes. Could he really sit in a coffee shop for hours, whilst she was safe in class, and then go out evenings and not worry about what she was doing? Did he really wait so long to try and find out what happened back home? That they obviously cared about each other, but didn't know how to deal with it made sense, but then the flim-flamming was unsatisfactory. Mafia? Really? Still not sure, was always waiting for the shoe to drop ... but it never really did.

Hopefully some answers in the sequel will help round out the plot.

Breaking Noah by Missy Johnson & Ashley Suzanne Blog Tour

What happens when you start falling for your worst enemy? Fans of Abbi Glines and Monica Murphy will relish this addictive novel of smoking-hot seduction—and revenge gone so wrong, it’s right.

I wasn’t always this jaded. I had a clear head, things I wanted out of life, and a concise plan on how to get there. For being only twenty-one, I pretty much had it all figured out. Until the day my cousin died.

I spent months going over all the details surrounding her death, trying to figure out how I missed the signs, and the only thing I could come up with was she would still be alive if it wasn’t for one person: her professor. So I transferred to his college, enrolled in his class, and set my new plan in motion.

First I’ll seduce him. Then I’ll ruin him. I’ve just got to stay strong and not let his charm and my emotions get the best of me. Because someone has to pay for her death. If it’s the last thing I do, I’m going to break Noah.

“So, we’ve discussed the main plot of the novel. Now we need to search out the subplots. What else was going on? Do the secondary characters possess any outstanding characteristics that would encourage . . .” How is this even warranted as a curriculum for a third-year student? I can remember doing this when I was in high school. At least I know I’ll ace the class—not that it matters, anyway.

Before he has a chance to finish giving out the assignment, the majority of the class begins shuffling around, gathering their belongings and walking toward the door.

“Okay, I guess our time for today is done. Finish the last five chapters before we meet on Wednesday.” A few students groan as they’re leaving. I take this as my cue as well.

I’m surprised at how quickly time passes. When the room is completely empty, I gather all my belongings and toss them into my bag. Taking a deep breath, I slowly stand and move toward his desk. He’s watching me with a curious expression. I half smile, drop my bag to the floor, and sit on the desk in front of his . . . legs crossed like a lady, of course.

“So, Zara . . . that’s a rather unique name.”

“Is it?” I raise my eyebrows. “Nothing seems unusual anymore. The girl at the gas station on the way here had a name tag that said Joya. You have stars calling their babies things like North West. Zara is normal in comparison.”

“Fair point,” he says and laughs. It’s an engaging laugh that makes me want to smile, but I don’t. “So, your transcripts say you were taking classes at a community college and were supposed to transfer in at the beginning of the term. Why are you just now arriving?” His brow furrows.

“Personal reasons. I’m very lucky I didn’t have to wait until the beginning of the next term.” Truth be told, I barely mustered the courage to show my face here. I had panic attacks for weeks, my mom begging me to stay behind and go to a state school, but I remembered why I was doing all of this. So, I put my big-girl panties on, gave myself a pep talk, and drove across two states to get here. And I was very lucky. Had the admissions direction not known Karly I would have been sent packing, but the man felt pity for me, which worked out in my favor.

“Your high school transcripts have credits from all over the place. Why’d you move around so much?” he asks.

“Army brat,” I nonchalantly say. To anyone with common sense, that’s all the explanation needed. Service members don’t stay in one place for too long, and neither do their families.

“Ah.” He nods, getting it right away. “Must be hard packing your life up all the time?”

Back it up, sir. I’m here to get in your head, not the other way around.

I shrug, not liking where this is going. My life is just that . . . mine. I don’t need anyone poking his nose around where it doesn’t belong. Especially him. I’m here to do one thing, and I won’t let his attempts at kindness distract me from it. Gotta keep the target locked in the crosshairs.

“It gets easier. I’ve already read through the syllabus for this class and I’m pretty confident I’m going to rock it.”

He raises his eyebrow and leans back in his chair.

“Is that so? Don’t get too cocky. I’ve heard I can be a pretty hard professor.”

So I’ve heard, you perverted fuck.

“I’m not cocky. Just confident,” I say, my voice cool. “If that’s all, may I be excused? I’m supposed to meet with my counselor before she leaves for the afternoon.”

He stares at me for a moment and then nods. “We’ll be analyzing Pride and Prejudice on Wednesday. We spent last week reading the material, so if you need the extra time to catch up to everyone, that’s fine, just don’t take too long. There’s a few sheets that go along with the book to document the characteristics of each character. You’ll need to get with a partner for those notes. It will be required for the final at the end of the semester.” This is his version of hard? I’ll eat him for breakfast.

“Thanks, Professor Bain, but if I were being honest, Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books. I’ve read it at least five times. Thanks for the heads-up, though. I’m sure I’ll be able to help anyone else that falls behind. Who knows, one of these boys could end up being my Mr. Darcy.”

I wink at him and walk out of the classroom, leaving him behind, lost for words. Most twenty-one-year-olds don’t read, let alone read the classics. Or for fun.

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
Zara is attending Northwestern with the sole purpose of getting revenge, making Noah pay for what he did. We know this going in. We switch to Noah's point of view and he seems like a good caring guy living with a longtime girlfriend he now has no interest in.

As the relationship between Zara and Noah unfolds things heats up and lines get blurred. The dual point of view had me questioning everything the characters were doing. Do I know what I think I know? Did Noah really do what Zara thinks he did? Are we being lulled into a false sense of security with Noah?

There were times in this book I really didn't like either Zara or Noah and I detested some of their behaviour. But it didn't matter because this book had me sucked right in and I couldn't read it fast enough. I had to see what would happen next.

My only criticism with this story was I felt the ending was rushed. Otherwise this is really good read. If you are after a twist on student/teacher relationship give Breaking Noah a try.

Ashley Suzanne has been writing for as long as she can remember. As a youngster, she was always creating stories and talking to her imaginary friends. Angela – ☆☆☆☆☆
Wildcard: Volume Three is the final book in the Wildcard series and is full of drama. Full to the point that there was a time or two when I felt another Moonstruck moment coming on. You know the scene where Cher slaps Nicolas Cage, yelling at him to “Snap out of it!”? Yep, that’s the one. Scar and Ryder were seriously annoying the crap out of me. I understood the lying and the secrets. They were both trying to protect the other. But when they learned of the police investigation while they were in England – a whole ocean away from the mess – and were petrified, I actually yelled at my Kindle: “Hello…you’re in England. They’re not going to extradite you for questioning. Even if they had evidence, the US would look like the biggest arse in the international community for trying to extradite a single mother while her severely ill son is under treatment and that’s not gonna happen!!!” <= SEE!!! Moonstruck moment.

Sadly, I really thought the book wasn’t going to do the series justice. Thankfully Ms. Johnson proved me wrong with Scar’s epiphany in the hospital at about 74% into the book. While it may or may not have been the author’s intention to lighten the mood of the book, that’s exactly what it did for me. I burst out laughing and sailed through the remainder of the book. There was still plenty of drama and excitement to be had, but I found it much more palatable – likely due to the fact that by this time Scar and Ryder began to show more of a united front against Tony and his machinations. All in all, Wildcard: Volume Three was a great ending to the series and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Johnson’s work.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the third book in the series, and has to be read in order.

Great conclusion to a well thought out story. So many times a dual POV story can fail – but most certainly not here. The chopping and changing worked, keeping the reader's head moving as if watching a tennis match. I'm even excited at the prospect of catching up with my new friends when Callie gets her story. Possibly my only gripe is that I would have happily read it all in one sitting rather than having to wait – but now can reread in its totality.

Fun, cute, sexy and dramatic – this series presses all the right buttons – enjoy!

Veronica – ☆☆☆
The final instalment of Missy Johnson's Wildcard series is a little angsty. Both Ryder and Scarlett are hiding secrets, each of them afraid to tell the other what they've done – trust is an issue with this couple and it made me keep turning the pages.

While this is a romance series, as a tennis fan I particularly enjoyed the scenes where Ryder is coaching Cally but you don't need to be a sports fan to enjoy this book. It is a fun series and the author finished the trilogy off nicely.

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
Volume III is the final book in the Wildcard Series. I felt it was a very good ending to this series. I had a love/hate relationship with Ryder and Scar in this one but in the end it was well worth the read.

There was so much drama in this one that just one conversation could have stopped. The back and forth hiding secrets was seriously annoying. I get that they were trying to protect each other but lord. Ms. Johnson brought it all together when they finally did come clean with one another and it became a better read. I truly enjoyed the series and it is worth the read.

I can't wait to see what Ms. Johnson comes up with next!

I’m so fucking pissed off that she would do this to me.

I really thought we had something, but instead, I’m left feeling like an idiot.

All I want to do is go back home and forget the last few weeks ever happened, but I’m stuck in this stupid country teaching tennis to spoiled rich kids who care less about playing than I do.

All I want to do is forget about her.

But things are never that easy, are they?

Angela – ☆☆☆☆
As much as serials annoy me because of the cliffhanger aspect, Ms. Johnson definitely knows how to write a good serial. Thankfully, she also released part two in a timely manner so that I was able to read it without having to go back and reread part one. By that I mean that when the story opens with Ryder mentally cursing Scarlett I was able to recall the end of volume one with ease.

While Ryder does give Scarlett the opportunity to explain who “the guy” is, he doesn’t do it before taking his metaphorical pound of flesh. This brings me to the only issue I actually had with the story. I cannot imagine any woman, much less Scarlett, being able to rationalize Ryder’s behavior toward her and “forgive” him so quickly. Ryder, at least, has some residual mistrust of her once they’ve reconciled over the issue and that she refuses to explain the situation seems to justify his mistrust.

Wildcard: Volume Two ups the drama for the series. I want to know what Scarlett did that has her ex blackmailing her. I can’t wait to see what happens with the person at the other end of the cell phone. Is Ryder going to accomplish anything with the ex now that he’s involved himself? Can Scarlett and Ryder maintain the passion between them? Seriously, the sex between these two is HOT! So many questions. Fortunately all should be answered in two to three weeks when Wildcard: Volume Three is released. I am looking forward to it already – the sign of a successful serial.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This book, the second in the Wildcard adventure is a whirlwind read. The reader is catapulted backwards and forwards, changing allegiances as the story unfolds. I really enjoyed it – but I NEED the final episode asap!!

DO read these in order, and enjoy both a fun, moving and sexy tale of two people who (hopefully) will get themselves sorted out by the end of book 3. There is a lot more to uncover, I have no doubt!

Veronica – ☆☆☆
Wildcard Volume 2 is the continuation of Ryder and Scarlett's story. Ryder and Scarlett's story is fun mainly because Ryder is a great character. He is brilliant and flawed and amusing. In the end however volume 2 turned out a little more serious than the first instalment and I was left with a not so great impression of Scarlett.

This books answers some but not all of the questions raised in volume one and new issues arise which leave us with another cliffhanger. But no need to worry – book 3 is due out in less than 2 weeks.

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆☆
**4.5 STARS**

This was a super quick read. I wanted so much more, I have so many questions!!

I love Ryder. He's a bit of a bad boy, but sweet and sexy.

Ryder's hurt, pissed off, and thinks of himself as a fool. Ryder finally decided to open up to someone and she played him for a fool. Now he's stuck in the US for a month. He's surprised to see Scarlett at his door, will he listen to reason, listen to her explanation? Can he believe what she is telling him or is there more to her past than he realizes?

I can't wait to get the next volume. I need to know what is going on!!!!

Missy lives in a small town in Central Victoria with her husband, and her confused pets (a dog who think she’s a cat, a cat who thinks he’s a dog…you get the picture).

When she’s not writing, she can usually be found looking for something to read.
