On His Watch by Katie Ruggle

In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder...

Ice rescue diver Derek Warner never meant to be a hero. But when two little girls go missing, he's the first in line to bring them home-even if that means scouring the wilderness with the woman he once loved and lost, Artemis Rey.

Artemis has never stopped wanting Derek. Now, racing to find the girls before it's too late, minutes turn to hours. Night falls. Old flames rekindle. And a danger grows in the darkest wilderness that may be more than even the Search and Rescue brotherhood can hope to face...

On His Watch is the pulse-pounding prequel to the riveting Search & Rescue series by Katie Ruggle.

Mary☆☆☆☆
Derek and Callum are part of the Search and Rescue Team, their main job is water rescue. While at a demonstration for a group of school children, Callum assigns Derek and the new girl, Lou, the job of talking to the kids about what they do when they have to rescue someone. But they are not keeping the kids’ attention, one girl wants to know when the firemen are coming? Yeah, me too. But when one of the kids falls into the freezing water, Derek and the team has to go to work for an actual rescue. One of the teachers is Artemis Rey, someone that Derek has loved for years but let her go because he thought he wasn't good enough for her. So now they are watching each other and worried about the boys that fell into the water. After the rescue and the boy is taken to the hospital, two children are missing from the group. Now they must regroup and start a search team to find the missing girls and a snow storm is coming faster than expected. Will they find the girls in time? Will Derek and Artie get a second chance?

This is a novella and it ends about 87% in and you get a look at Lou's story, which is the next book. I would have liked more on Derek and Artie and maybe there will be more in coming books. This story is short but is packed with suspense, romance and even will make you laugh. This is a first for me from Katie Ruggle and I am looking forward to reading more from this series.

This is a short but action packed read – and I am excited to see where this series goes next. The set up to get us to know the characters that are likely to feature in upcoming books is really clever, and very natural. There is an outstanding mystery that will no doubt re-emerge in the future.

I liked the romance, as in a short story, it can sometimes be rushed, but by making it a second chance, and explaining the why, it is plausible, and for very little action in 'difficult' conditions, extremely sensual. I am looking forward to seeing where it goes next – and guessing that Callum may make a star appearance quite soon.

Will definitely be reviewing the next in the series when I can.

This is a short read, but don't let its length fool you. It's sexy and action packed. I also enjoyed the little bit of humor peppered throughout. I got a little taste of what this series offers and I can't wait to read how the rest of the series plays out.
