Catching Summer by L.P. Dover

Hailed by Heidi McLaughlin as a bestselling author who “knows how to create the men who make us swoon,” L.P. Dover returns with an edgy, emotionally gripping Second Chances novel about a beautiful widow who can’t resist a chiseled NFL player.

Former nurse Summer Jacobs has seen her fair share of suffering, but she never expected tragedy to hit so close to home. After watching her husband die in the MMA ring, Summer spends the next two years fighting her way through the darkness. The last thing she needs is another hardheaded athlete turning her life upside down. But that’s exactly what happens when she meets a gridiron star who’s as skilled at stealing hearts as he is at snagging passes.

Carolina Cougars wide receiver Evan Townsend usually has no problem winning fans, so he’s intrigued when Summer shoots down his go-to plays for winning a woman’s attention. Never one to back down from a challenge, Evan turns up the heat, setting off sparks that neither can deny. But as his slow seduction begins to chase away Summer’s pain, he gets the feeling that someone is desperate to keep them apart. Now Evan will do anything to protect her—because he never misses a chance to make a perfect catch.

I loved the Gloves Off series and I'm not sure how I missed the first 5 1/2 books in this series, but I did. You can bet I am going to go back and get caught up though. I read this as a standalone without any issues, other than being mad at myself for missing previous books.

Catching Summer is all about Summer and getting her life back together after the death of her husband, Austin, which basically happens in front of her. It's the battle to beat the depression that was pulling her under. With the help of her sister, Austin's brother Grayson, and her therapist, Summer is getting her life back and ready for whatever is thrown at her. That may or may not include Evan Townsend, a sexy NFL wide receiver.

Summer honors Austin’s dream and opens a very successful restaurant with Grayson, something he and Austin had always wanted to do. Summer thinks her life is finally on the right path to move to the next step, when Evan asks her out, she hesitates but agrees. Will Evan turn out to be exactly what she needs to finally move on or will worrying about his safety put her right back in that same position she was with Austin and his fighting?

I can't wait to read Derek's story. I was heartbroken for him. Out of anyone he deserves the happily ever after!

I love a good sports romance and this one definitely qualifies. It’s a hot page turner that has just the right mix of romance, angst, and intrigue, I loved it!

Summer Jacobs watched her MMA husband be brutally murdered right in front of her. The horrible experience has weighed heavily on her and she’s lived the two years after in a daze, disbelieving that she’ll ever be in another relationship again. With the unwavering support of her family, Summer starts to finally come back to the world, and when NFL star Evan Townsend sets his sights on her, she starts to believe that maybe finding a second love isn’t such a far off possibility. Evan has had the hots for his sister’s friend, Summer, for the last two years, but his sister warned him off since it was so close after the loss of her husband. Now, two years later, Summer is helping out at Evan’s football camp and the two spending so much time together has caused the sparks to fly.

I really loved how this story sucked me in and I couldn’t think about anything but finishing the story. I didn’t even realize it was part of a series until I finished reading, so it’s definitely okay as a standalone, but I will be going back and checking out the other books while anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!

This book starts rather slowly, but the heat and drama speed up and it is unputdownable from about 20% in – be warned!

Told from both Summer and Evan's points of view, we get a good understanding of their feelings and confusion through their inner monologue. Once they open up, the pace picks up and we are treated to some very poignant scenes. You should make sure you have a tissue or two to hand, and if you really tear up, maybe read in private! I really liked the twist, and the buildup was very effective.

If you like sports romances, then you won't be disappointed, but this is much more than that. Find yourself a quiet corner, a tissue box, and give yourself a treat.
