Footsteps of the Past by Felice Stevens Release Blitz

Do you ever really know the person you’re living with?

It was like in the movies: their eyes met from across the room and they fell in love.
Nine years later, Chess and André are the envy of all their friends.
But this is real life…. and things are never what they seem.

Still waters run deep—the better to hide Chess’s ugly past. He’s worked hard to bury the troubled teen he once was and is living a life he never imagined possible. André’s love is a gift that makes him believe in second chances, and Chess is grateful for it every day. The only thing he wants is what André finds impossible to give: his time. Six months apart might be the breaking point, even for Chess.

One horrible night changed André’s life forever. Formerly a party boy of the Hamptons social scene, André buries himself in work for years until he meets Chess and learns to enjoy the simple things. He’s tired of being away from home all the time and ready to step down from his role as CEO of the family business, no matter how they try and pull him back in. But old habits die hard… and so do memories.

Photos from the past and present surface, shocking Chess and André out of their carefully constructed dream life. They are forced to face the unthinkable: the love they thought would last a lifetime may be on the brink of falling apart. Secrets are exposed, opening a Pandora’s box both men hoped would stay locked forever. Now Chess and André face the hardest question: do you ever really know the person you’re living with?

This is the second book, and you need to read the first book before this one. I got all the feels from this book. There was so much love between this couple. Both Chess and André have gone through so much in their lives. They have secrets they didn't tell each other; they come to the surface in this book. There are flashback scenes, which I normally don't like, but it fit this storyline and was done well. Chess and André are perfect for each other, and I loved being on the rollercoaster ride with them in this book.

Tomorrow is always the second chance for the mistakes of today.

Intended for Bristol by L.P. Dover

L.P. Dover’s tantalizing Second Chances series scores once again as the Carolina Cougars’ infamous bad boy takes a shot at seducing a driven career woman who’s supposed to be out of bounds.

Trying to live down his very public indiscretions, Carolina Cougars kicker Jaxon Reed feels like the most hated man in the NFL. Fans and teammates alike treat him with the disrespect he figures he deserves. Unfortunately for them, Jaxon’s no easy target. As payback, he sets his sights on the quarterback’s sister: a sultry brunette who’s curvy, confident, and sexy as hell. But what begins as a revenge fling turns into so much more—a lesson in humanity, and in love.

Bristol Thomas doesn’t have time for games, especially those played by her brother’s Neanderthal teammates. A talented interior designer with lofty goals, she doesn’t know the first thing about football, or Jaxon—except that he’s exactly the type of man she usually avoids. But when his deep laugh and deeper kisses break through her walls, she becomes the target of a fan who’s obsessed with Jaxon. Now she needs to know that Jaxon has her back... because he already has her heart.

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
Jaxon Reed is your typical love 'em and leave 'em bad boy. He's arrogant, cocky, and knows with just a smile, the ladies will come running. He's also trying to win back the trust of his team. When he tried to sabotage Evan and Summer's relationship, the team didn't take it well and he became blacklisted basically. The team was against him, but they knew they needed him on the field. Derek was one of the only guys to go out of his way to be nice to Jaxon. Slowly but surely, the guys were starting to see that Jaxon wasn't as bad as he was made out to be. When Cooper Davis, the star quarterback, was injured severely enough to never return to the game, the coach made the decision to bring in another quarterback, Ryan Delaney. Ryan's bad attitude and arrogance is known throughout the league. No one is happy to have him on the team, least of all Jaxon.

When Jaxon sees a beautiful woman sitting alone at the bar he makes his move, not knowing who she is. He's mesmerized by her, especially since she has no idea that he is a football player. After he excuses himself, he finds out later find out she's sitting at a table with Ryan. Will Jaxon risk being in the team’s good graces to get back at Ryan by trying to steal his girl or will Jaxon realize he's getting too old for games?

Intended for Bristol was a definite page turner for me. I always end up rooting for the bad boy. I enjoy the sneak peaks we get into the lives of the other characters. I always miss past characters after their books have completed. Jaxon ended up to be sweet and sexy, and the chemistry between him and Bristol was off the charts.

I can't wait to see where Ms. Dover goes next with this team.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆
This is book nine of a series, they are all connected, and there is a thread running through the ones I have read, but it could be read as a standalone.

I liked the plot of this book – and even though I guessed the twist, I think that it worked pretty well.

The story is told from the two lead’s points of view, but their voices were not significantly different for me. At times, there was too much detail given, which gave the writing a slightly stilted style. I was not always convinced by some of the tempestuous emotions, which did not seem consistent with what the characters actually said. I was also confused when Bristol talked about him as Jaxon, when she knew him as Jack. The detail about the football was good and flowed really well – and the group events were fun too – especially if you have read previous books and were happy to get an update on everyone's relationships. Do be prepared to need a tissue, as there is a very moving event which cannot fail to cause a tear or three to fall.

Lee’Anne – ☆☆☆☆
Fantastic read that was hard to put down. Derek McLaughlin is a linebacker for the Carolina Cougars who turns to alcohol, drugs, and screwing around after his pregnant girlfriend is killed in a car accident. He’s gone away for a while to try to figure out his life and when he returns, he forces himself to visit the scene of the accident, which is where he runs into the intriguing Hayden. Hayden Hunter is a veterinarian whose life pretty much revolves around work. She can’t believe it when the sexy football player, Derek, shows interest in her, but she’s willing to give things a go. When odd things start happening at Hayden’s work, she realizes that someone is out to get her and Derek’s only focus is protecting her at all cost.

This is definitely an emotional read and the author does a phenomenal job keeping you reading with just the right amount of mystery and romance. I also love that we get a glimpse of some of the characters from other books in this series. This can be read as a standalone, however, this entire series rocks so I definitely recommend checking the other books out too. The writing is great and I love that I didn’t want to put it down once I started reading!

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆☆
Defending Hayden can be read as a standalone or within the series. Ms. Dover does an excellent job of explaining previous events that it doesn't feel like a full retelling of the past plots but just enough that you could read as a standalone; of course, reading the entire series is always better.

Derek was finally past his bad boy ways while he was in a relationship with Brianna. When the accident ripped her and his unborn baby from his life, he hit rock bottom. The last thing he wanted was to be playing for the Carolina Cougars. Walking away from it all, he escaped to Wyoming to get himself together. Two months wasn't long enough to move completely past what happened, but he had to get back to the team, knowing football was all he had left.

Hayden is veterinarian and good at what she does. She's a year out of a relationship that ended in the loss of a friend and a cheating ex. She isn't looking for a new relationship, but when she runs into Derek at every turn, a new friend isn't out of the question. Can Derek move past what he lost and onto what could be his future? Will Hayden be able to keep her heart from getting crushed?

I love this series; every book is instantly a page turner. I love the complexity of Derek's character. Even though the plot wasn't a shocking twist, I still couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what happened next.

I can't wait to read more about Jax!

His Second Chance by Stephanie Lake

The Seventh Viscount of Torring, Randall Blair is more than disgusted with unfaithful lovers. When his last lover announces his engagement to the current reigning belle, Randall decides to suppress his true nature and follow suit. He is determined, once and for all, to forget the dark sailor who slipped in and out of his life five years before.

Lady Prudence Wedgewood has, for a member of the fair sex, unquestioned beauty, and shows a surprising wit, which will entertain Randall, even if her well-proportioned body does not arouse his desires. The marriage should at least be bearable.

The Blair and Wedgewood wedding plans unfold flawlessly...until Lady Prudence’s brother returns.

Lieutenant David Wedgewood has always been beyond discreet with his unnatural attraction to men. An attraction, which years ago, nearly set Randall’s bed aflame for a blissful, torrid week. David returned for only one reason: to save his beloved sister from a marriage destined to bring nothing but pain. Marriage to a sod!

He will kill Randall if that’s what it takes to stop the wedding. And he is willing to seduce Randall, to prove that this marriage can only end in disaster and heartbreak.

Erica – ☆☆☆
3.5 Stars.
Stephanie Lake is a new-to-me author, and I found her writing style easy to read and the pacing fluid, offering a few stolen hours of guilty pleasure reading.

His Second Chance was a well-developed historical romance novella on the shorter side, featuring ex-lovers. A rich aristocrat, Randell is lonely, to the point he wishes to marry just so he can have someone to come home to. While he prefers men, they have never given him the stability which he seeks, especially with the hangman's noose hanging over his head should his affairs be discovered. With the help of his aunt, he seeks a bride.

David had freaked 5 years earlier, fleeing his lover's bed in fear, only to have the nightmare become reality when a fellow serviceman and lover is hanged, where he finds out the man had been cheating with many others, and upon interrogation, the man named David as another he had bedded.

Terrified, filled with self-loathing and need, David returns home when he finds out his ex-lover is set on marrying his sister. None of which is a spoiler, but I felt the need to set the tone. Angst. Angst. Hurt feelings and pride. More angst. All of which sets the tone for a deliciously indulgent read.

Why did I only rate at 3.5 stars? Novellas are difficult to write – so few pages means everything has to be at warp speed, the development of the characters and connecting the reader to them. I felt disconnected while reading, never emotionally checking in. This is my personal opinion, and it very well could have been my current mood. But with a novella, when I feel the need to skim, it must not be to my tastes. Also, I felt as if I had been dropped in the middle of an already established series, like I was missing something, but this is listed as book #1 in a new series, therefore something was off about the set-up, unless this is a spin-off.

Recommended for readers of MM historical romance.

Would I read more by this author? Yes, I am curious to read more.

Catching Summer by L.P. Dover

Hailed by Heidi McLaughlin as a bestselling author who “knows how to create the men who make us swoon,” L.P. Dover returns with an edgy, emotionally gripping Second Chances novel about a beautiful widow who can’t resist a chiseled NFL player.

Former nurse Summer Jacobs has seen her fair share of suffering, but she never expected tragedy to hit so close to home. After watching her husband die in the MMA ring, Summer spends the next two years fighting her way through the darkness. The last thing she needs is another hardheaded athlete turning her life upside down. But that’s exactly what happens when she meets a gridiron star who’s as skilled at stealing hearts as he is at snagging passes.

Carolina Cougars wide receiver Evan Townsend usually has no problem winning fans, so he’s intrigued when Summer shoots down his go-to plays for winning a woman’s attention. Never one to back down from a challenge, Evan turns up the heat, setting off sparks that neither can deny. But as his slow seduction begins to chase away Summer’s pain, he gets the feeling that someone is desperate to keep them apart. Now Evan will do anything to protect her—because he never misses a chance to make a perfect catch.

I loved the Gloves Off series and I'm not sure how I missed the first 5 1/2 books in this series, but I did. You can bet I am going to go back and get caught up though. I read this as a standalone without any issues, other than being mad at myself for missing previous books.

Catching Summer is all about Summer and getting her life back together after the death of her husband, Austin, which basically happens in front of her. It's the battle to beat the depression that was pulling her under. With the help of her sister, Austin's brother Grayson, and her therapist, Summer is getting her life back and ready for whatever is thrown at her. That may or may not include Evan Townsend, a sexy NFL wide receiver.

Summer honors Austin’s dream and opens a very successful restaurant with Grayson, something he and Austin had always wanted to do. Summer thinks her life is finally on the right path to move to the next step, when Evan asks her out, she hesitates but agrees. Will Evan turn out to be exactly what she needs to finally move on or will worrying about his safety put her right back in that same position she was with Austin and his fighting?

I can't wait to read Derek's story. I was heartbroken for him. Out of anyone he deserves the happily ever after!

Lee’Anne – ☆☆☆☆☆
I love a good sports romance and this one definitely qualifies. It’s a hot page turner that has just the right mix of romance, angst, and intrigue, I loved it!

Summer Jacobs watched her MMA husband be brutally murdered right in front of her. The horrible experience has weighed heavily on her and she’s lived the two years after in a daze, disbelieving that she’ll ever be in another relationship again. With the unwavering support of her family, Summer starts to finally come back to the world, and when NFL star Evan Townsend sets his sights on her, she starts to believe that maybe finding a second love isn’t such a far off possibility. Evan has had the hots for his sister’s friend, Summer, for the last two years, but his sister warned him off since it was so close after the loss of her husband. Now, two years later, Summer is helping out at Evan’s football camp and the two spending so much time together has caused the sparks to fly.

I really loved how this story sucked me in and I couldn’t think about anything but finishing the story. I didn’t even realize it was part of a series until I finished reading, so it’s definitely okay as a standalone, but I will be going back and checking out the other books while anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This book starts rather slowly, but the heat and drama speed up and it is unputdownable from about 20% in – be warned!

Told from both Summer and Evan's points of view, we get a good understanding of their feelings and confusion through their inner monologue. Once they open up, the pace picks up and we are treated to some very poignant scenes. You should make sure you have a tissue or two to hand, and if you really tear up, maybe read in private! I really liked the twist, and the buildup was very effective.

If you like sports romances, then you won't be disappointed, but this is much more than that. Find yourself a quiet corner, a tissue box, and give yourself a treat.

Little Moments by Madison Street Blog Tour

Think.

Think back to the exact moment when you fell in love for the first time.

That split second. That precise moment.

Can you remember it?

I can remember the day as if it were yesterday: from the light blue dress she wore, to her golden locks curved along her shoulders, down to the shocking tingle when our fingers touched. It was the happiest day of my life, and yet she didn’t even know I existed.

What if you had the chance to relive those moments? Would you take it?

I’ve waited almost ten years for her and my time has finally come.
This split second, this precise moment will change her life forever.

Chapter 1

Roman

THE SMELL OF SMOKE BURNS MY NOSTRILS. The faint cry of my mother’s screams echoes from behind the walls. Is this a dream? Mom, where are you?

Moving my sleepy fingers awake, I slowly open my eyes to darkness. The distant moonlight is grasping to shine inside my bedroom. As my eyes open wide, I see a haze of smoke surrounding me. Sitting up in bed, my hand reaches out to grab it. The siren of fire trucks grows louder.

My lungs begin to burn as smoke fills them. I buckle down and cough, gasping for clean air. Fear creeps along the back of my neck, as the hair stands still.

“Mom!”

I quickly jump out of bed and immediately feel the heat on my bare feet. Whoa, that’s hot! Remembering what I learned in school, I try to stay low to the ground. Slowly crawling to the window, I try to open it, but the lock is too tight for me to pry.

The heat from inside is getting hotter and hotter. Beads of sweat start to trickle down my face. I can’t see anything. It’s too dark.

The panic builds inside. Banging on the window, “Somebody help me!” The heat on the window burns slightly, but I ignore the pain.

I look out the window to see three fire trucks pull up beside the apartment building. Firefighters race to the hydrants, connecting the water hose, as others rush into the building. Police cars make their way alongside the building as well.

Sudden screams startle me, jolting me away from the window. Mom?!

Keeping low, I crawl to my bedroom door and tap the knob to see if it’s hot. Sudden heat tingles my skin, so I turn around to try and find something to protect my hand. Feeling my way along the floor, I pick up what feels like a t-shirt and head back toward the bedroom door.

The smoke in my room gets thicker and harder to breathe. Constantly coughing, I make way to the door to twist open the knob. Pushing it open, I see flames cover the living room and its walls.

Pictures of my mom and me, plants, furniture; everything I see is burning. Standing up quickly and shielding myself, I yell out, “Mom! Where are you?”

“Roman! Oh, thank God you’re alright?”

Frantically, I look around to see her, but the flames blind my vision. “Mom, I can’t see you.”

“I’m in the foyer; I’m coming to get you! Stay where you are. Keep low baby, keep low!”

Bits of the ceiling above, crash into the living room, engulfing in flames. Heat rises, flames grow higher; panic builds inside. I’m scared.

A heavy pounding crashes onto the apartment’s front door. The muffled sounds of deep voices carry from the other side of it. The pounding continues until a firefighter crashes through the door. I can’t help but scream.

The firefighter grabs hold of me, “Are you okay kid?” Where’s your family?” He quickly inspects my arms and legs for any signs of injury and burns.

Pointing toward the back of the apartment, “My mom is back there and she’s on her way.”

Nodding his head, ‘Let’s get you out of here.”

He talks into his radio, “This is Rivera. I have two residents on the sixth floor in need of extraction. I have the boy with me now.”

Another voice responds through the radio, “On my way, Rivera.”

He wraps what looks like a blanket around my body, “This will prevent you from getting burned.”

I nod my head, “Thank you.”

“Roman!”

Turning around, I see my mother reaching us. She pulls me into her arms, “Oh, thank you, thank you. I’m so happy you’re alright.”

I see tears spill out of her eyes, “what took you so long Mom?’

“I got stuck in the foyer. Some debris from upstairs fell. I’m okay though.”

The firefighter wraps a blanket around her, “Are you all right Ma’am? Anyone else in the apartment?”

“Yes, I’m okay. No one else lives here.”

At that moment, another firefighter comes barreling through the front entrance. “We need to get out now before it crumbles!”

Rivera picks me up, “Hold on kid,” and races off into the stairwell of the building. I look behind me and see my mother being carried by the other firefighter.

Smoke and flames surround us, and the unbearable smell fills my nose. I use the blanket to cover it, hoping I can breathe easier. Racing down the stairs, the building trembles and I hear debris falling.

As we pass each floor, cries for help echoed throughout the stairwell as I see firefighters attempt to complete their rescues. The building shakes again, and Rivera stops suddenly, grabbing onto the banister.

“Shit! Hold on to me, kid!”

As our bodies sway along the banister, I see the pieces of the stairwell beneath us crumble and fall into the darkness below. My eyes grow wide, and my breathing stops as fear of falling seeps in.

Rivera looks behind and yells, “We need to turn around! The stairwell is gone! Go back up to the fourth floor, and we’ll jump for it!”

As we turn around, I can see Mom wrapped safely in the firefighter’s arms, and she gives me a warm smile.

We follow closely behind until we reach the fourth floor. My mother’s rescuer runs to the nearest window, but suddenly debris falls in front of them. I hear her scream and the firefighter curse.

Rivera holds onto me tight as he radios for a jumping point. As he’s given his orders, he yells back, “We’re jumping off the west hallway! Follow us!”

He turns to race down another corridor, as I look back to see my Mom in the distance, “Mom!”

Rivera assures me, “Don’t worry kid. He’ll get her out.”

The building trembled again as we rush to the jumping point. I can hear Rivera’s heavy breathing through the oxygen mask, and he squeezes me tighter.

“Almost there. Hold on!”

I see light shine from a busted window casing as we get closer and closer. And as we approach for the jump, I hold with all of my might. Rivera leaps out, pulling me closer.

My eyes shut tight and loud screams from within escape me as we fly through the air. Until suddenly, we are bouncing up and down on a trampoline. As our bodies settle onto the trampoline, I look up at the building. It’s completely covered in flames. Smoke escapes broken windows; firefighters spray water to calm the fires while others are jumping out of the building into safety.

An explosion blasts from inside the building and it immediately begins to crumble into dust.

My heart sinks as I jump off the trampoline and rush toward the building, “Mom!”

Rivera grabs hold of me, “No! Don’t!”

I struggle in his arms, “No! My mom is still in there! She needs my help!”

I continue to struggle as tears trickle down my face as he holds onto me. What feels like forever is probably only a few minutes, my aching body surrenders in his arms.

I look back at the crumbled building as my body shudders. “She didn’t make it, did she?”

“No. I’m sorry son.”

Jacki – ☆☆☆
This was a sweet, easy read for me. It was a mostly clean, sweet romance story. I had read Little Things and thought it was pretty good, so I continued on with the series. First off, I like the cover. It fits Melanie pretty well, but I think this book was all about the male lead, Roman.

Roman's story begins in childhood with a devastating bang that draws you to him right away. Despite his agonizing past, he is able to move on and have a loving childhood, even developing a crush on a pretty girl during his teen years. He grows into a pretty amazing, somewhat shy man.

Melanie is a loving, caring woman who works as a nurse and tries her best to take care of her patients like she'd like to be taken care of. She hasn't had the best luck with romance. First, her boyfriend and best friend (Duke and Raya from book one) fall in love. Then, her colleague comes on to her and they start a sexy fling, only for her to find out he's already taken. She tries to focus on herself and makes some changes in her life.

When circumstances land Roman in Melanie's care, they both remember the past and realize that the feeling is still there, but they aren't sure where to go from here or whether a relationship between them could actually work.

Overall, I think that Roman's character out-shined Melanie's, but their relationship was sweet to "watch" unfold. Roman's story was surprisingly emotional and deep. I thought that there were quite a lot of "filler" moments that seemed to stretch the storyline longer than necessary, but even with them, it ended up being a solid plot. I did enjoy the book and would recommend it to anyone who has read Little Things and anyone who is into romances with sexy fire fighters and nurses.

Turn Up the Heat by Serena Bell Blog Tour

For readers of Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery, Serena Bell teases all five senses in this poignant, tantalizing novel of fantasies long hidden . . . and finally indulged.

Aspiring chef Lily McKee noticed Kincaid Graves the first time he walked into the dingy diner where she waits tables. With his ice-blue eyes and primal tattoos, his presence puts Lily on edge—and reminds her of all the unfulfilled longings she isn’t pursuing while she’s stuck in this dead-end job. Without a doubt, the man is dangerous to her long-term plans of leaving town and hiring on at a real kitchen—and yet, she hungers for him, if even for just a taste.

Kincaid didn’t come back to his coastal Oregon hometown looking for a good time or a good meal. The ex-con has a score to settle, old wrongs to set right. But Lily, equal parts innocence and insight, brings out an impulsive side of him he thought he’d left behind in the past. And it only takes one intense moment of weakness between them to make him consider the possibility of an entirely new future—and the promise of passion beyond either of their wildest dreams.

In prison, you perfected the art of watching without seeming to watch. You learned to keep an eye on everyone and everything, to monitor subtle shifts, the changes in weather that warned of coming disaster.

You didn’t lose that habit overnight. Kincaid Graves could sit in his booth in the diner, read his book, and see and hear everything. He knew where she was, every second. He’d watched when the burly Greek had invited her to cook, seen the way she danced behind the counter, graceful and efficient. He’d monitored the movements of the other cook, too, so he knew the guy had been in her space, had messed with her grill.

He’d watched her scrape the grill and start over, and he’d watched her wield a hot spatula against her oppressor the next time he’d messed with her. She’d eked a smile out of the guy, even—the guy knew toughness when he saw it. She might not be from around here—something Midwestern in her accent said she wasn’t—but she had good pioneer spirit. Build, burn it down, rebuild.

She was beautiful, this close. Huge green eyes, arched eyebrows, pixie face, pointed chin, wide, full mouth. Those eyes. Hadn’t he read that people were programmed to go nuts for big eyes, something to do with the urge to care for young, vulnerable creatures?

This was all apart from how bad he wanted her. She was tall and slim, with small, high breasts and a tiny waist, and he wanted to pick her up and wedge her against the wood paneling and surge into her under that absurd little skirt.

He couldn’t trust those impulses. He’d been the better part of a decade without sex with anything other than his fist. He was hyperaware of all the waitresses, dressed to bring in tips in short skirts and booty shorts and teeny-tiny tops. His cock was decidedly unpicky these days, willing to get hammer hard for any halfway appealing visual.

Her eyes were another thing entirely. Always moving, taking everything in. Sad all the time, sadder still after she’d been booted out of the kitchen. He’d wanted to shake the asshole owner, to make him see: She’s the only one around here who knows what she’s doing. Listen to her!

Those eyes took people’s measure, were thoughtful without being calculating. She spent time at each table, never seemed rushed, talked earnestly with customers, advising them. Getting to know them.

Those eyes, when they looked at him, held something speculative, something greedy. His cock hardened. Ever-hopeful idiot.

“I’m Lily,” she said.

He already knew that. The waitresses here didn’t wear name tags, but he’d heard her say it to other customers. Still, it was different, hearing her say it to him. Introducing yourself, that was the beginning of something. A friendship, a relationship.

He didn’t need or want either of those things. For one thing, he had a job to do, a mission. He was going to find a way to get his grandmother’s money back and make sure it went to the kids she’d loved so much. For now, that was where all his energy needed to go. And besides, even if there might at some point in his life—if he could remake it—be room for a woman, it wouldn’t be a woman like Lily. It would be someone less refined, angrier, more worldly, someone who had already set aside bright, innocent dreams. The other waitresses were closer to it. A single mom with a deadbeat ex-husband—Grant had told him—who’d done time for cooking meth. Another, thirty-something, chronically single, her age showing in every line of her face and in her dead eyes. It would be harder to scare away a woman like that. To disappoint her.

This woman, this Lily, did not seem like the sort who would be able to assimilate Kincaid’s life story. In a rage, I held a knife, a knife I’d used to chop onions since I was eight years old, to a man’s throat, and I told him if he hurt my grandmother again, I’d kill him. I cut him. Not deep enough to kill. But deep enough.

“I’ll take the check,” he said, instead of answering her implicit question. “Get out of your way.”

Even though he wanted to stay. Because it was a place to be, because there were people here and that felt like company, even if he didn’t interact with them. Because he was used to constant clamor, to being surrounded by human life and foible, and if he went home now it would be another night in that small, dark, lonely cabin. His P.O.—parole officer—had strongly advised him against spending time in bars (“Shit happens in bars”), which left him only a few options for hangouts. This was his favorite.

“You want to stay? Sit and read?”

It was as if she’d read his mind, and the way those green eyes bored into him, maybe she had.

“He’ll be pissed at you.” He gestured with his head at the tubby Greek owner.

“He’s already pissed at me.” She smiled and shrugged.

Brave girl. “You’ll lose tips.”

“I’ll live.”

They both knew he’d tip her well. He’d gone out of his way to tip all the waitresses here generously, in hopes of a favor like this one coming his way. The chance to sit a little longer where the noise in his head wasn’t louder than the noise outside.

“But you do have to tell me your name.”

She’d noticed his evasion, then. “Kincaid Graves.”

“Kincaid,” she repeated. “Nice to meet you, Kincaid.”

“Nice to meet you, Lily,” he said.

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
This is the story of Lily and Kincaid. Kincaid is a regular at the diner Lily is waitress at. They are desperately attracted to each other and a hot back alley encounter proves they have great chemistry. The problem is neither of them wants a relationship. Lily is trying to focus on saving money to move back to Chicago to get her dream job as a chef while Kincaid, a parolee, is trying to stay out of trouble and find his grandmother's lost will.

I particularly liked the parts of the story told from Kincaid's point of view. The kinds of things he has to consider about his life and activities as a parolee were interesting and his predicament in life really pulled on my heart strings.

There is a good amount of heat and emotion in Turn Up the Heat, but this story also has a backbone a calmness and strength that pulled me in and kept me reading. A very good read.

This is the second book this month I’ve added to my review schedule at the last minute because of the excerpts I read while preparing the blog post. Fortunately I had a little play in my schedule, but even if I hadn’t Turn Up the Heat would have been well worth getting behind for. The series title is very appropriate for the book as it is a second chance romance like none I’ve ever read before. Yes, Kincaid’s status as a parolee is not new to the second chance genre nor was Lily’s return home from the big bad city after being wronged by a man. And while I absolutely loved how Ms. Bell made each of those situations unique for her characters, what was new for me was the underlying reason that drove Lily’s sexual second chance and I found the way the author dealt with it perfect for these two characters.

Ms. Bell does an amazing job of setting up the story within the first two chapters – with the first being used to introduce the reader to Lily and provide enough info that I felt as though I had become friends with her and was privy to her secrets, hopes, and dreams…and her attraction for Kincaid. In the second chapter we learn about Kincaid – where he’s from, what he’s done, and the plans he has…and what he sees as his ill-advised attraction to Lily. By chapter three I was completely invested in both of the main characters and because it was apparent that the two had been denying their mutual attraction for a while, the sexual encounter that occurs is not only expected but hot as heck. It gets even hotter when Kincaid realizes that the sweet and innocent looking object of his affection has a kink that aligns perfectly with his – Lily not only likes it rough and dirty, she harbors what I can only describe as rape fantasies. This is not to be confused with dubious consent because Lily fully consents, nor is it simply an issue of being restrained during sex either. Rather Lily responds to Kincaid’s ability to hold her down, to be unrelenting and not give in to her struggles, and to “take” what he needs from her without holding back, without checking his impulses and strength, yet doing it all with the ability to safeword out should either of them need it. While Lily is hoping for a repeat, Kincaid doesn’t want to risk his newfound freedom and avoids Lily until he no longer can and both agree to keep it strictly sexual as neither is “relationship material.” The sex is hot and the lines begin to blur as they spend more and more time together until Lily reveals her secrets to Kincaid but he does not with Lily none the wiser. All is well until Lily learns Kincaid’s secret and the sense of betrayal makes what she endured in Chicago pale in comparison as they both see the door slammed on their happy ending.

Although this is not the first book I have read in which the lead female character has rape fantasies, it is the first one that wasn’t a BDSM-themed book. I liked how the author used the book to show that just because a woman might have such fantasies doesn’t mean she wants to live a BDSM lifestyle. Yet the same rules apply in the relationship she develops with Kincaid – trust is paramount and when that trust is broken, the relationship is over. I found the way their relationship progressed to be realistic as they both held back in the beginning and opened up gradually over the course of the book. It was easy to understand why Kincaid kept his secret and while I completely understood Lily’s reaction, it didn’t make my heart hurt any less for Kincaid. While there are some darker undertones to the book due to Lily’s rape fantasies, Turn Up the Heat is ultimately a second chance romance and I absolutely loved the resolution Ms. Bell provided for Lily and Kincaid. This is the first book in the Second Chances series and I’m looking forward to book two already.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is a very hot and steamy read, with some fabulous kink – but it is also a lot more than that. The way that the desires and demands were written made everything both real, but also intensely erotic.

Lily and Kincaid are so well drawn that I would recognise them in the street, and so appealing that I would want to spend the evening with them. In short order, Ms. Bell paints their lives and wishes so clearly that it is impossible not to get totally invested. I had a few heart in the mouth moments ... but it was well worth the journey.

USA Today bestselling author Serena Bell writes stories about how sex messes with your head, why smart people sometimes do stupid things, and how love can make it all better. She wrote her first steamy romance before she was old enough to understand what all the words meant and has been perfecting the art of hiding pages and screens from curious eyes ever since—a skill that’s particularly useful now that she’s the mother of two school-aged children.
