Deep in the heart of the Rockies

She needs help, stat.

“Where’s the bathroom?”

“All the way down the hall,” she answered automatically, her brain caught up in the overwhelming proximity of him. “Last door on the left. Why do you smell like bubble gum?”

He blinked. “I do not.”

“You do.”

“I do not smell like bubble gum. I’m not a sticky six-year-old.”

Suddenly realizing the ridiculousness of their argument, she shifted back and mentally changed gears. “Fine. You don’t smell like bubble gum, even though you really do. Hurry up in the bathroom. As soon as you’re done, I want to take a shower. Dutch’s and that empty warehouse left a film of grossness on me.”

He scowled at her, looking like he was dying to continue their discussion, but he clamped his mouth closed with a tight nod and moved to the door instead. At the last second before he disappeared down the hall, he turned back toward her. “Leave those sheets on,” he said, a trace of his usual smirk back in place.

He waited, so she held her hands up in the universal I won’t do anything gesture. “Fine. If you want to sleep in my stink, I’m not going to stop you.”

“I do.” He gave her a wink—which should’ve looked stupid, but because it was John, turned out stupid hot instead—and headed to the bathroom.

As soon as he was out of sight, Molly let out a deep breath and started to sink down onto Felicity’s bed. The squishy mattress called to her, tempting her to lie down and close her eyes, just for a moment. With a groan, she forced herself to stand again. Once she was down, she’d be out like a light, and she’d been telling the truth about needing to wash off this terrible night.

She headed out into the hall, figuring that she might as well check on Norah while she was attempting to stay awake. Cracking her sister’s door, she saw that her room was lit by dim blue light from her sister’s computer screen. Molly knocked softly, pushing open the door the rest of the way when Norah made a quiet sound that she took as an invitation to enter. Norah was sitting on her narrow bed, her legs curled underneath her and her laptop open. The rest of her bed was taken up by a snoring Warrant. Norah’s face was bathed in the bluish light from the screen, making her look even paler than usual. Even though Molly knew it was just an illusion, she still couldn’t stand to see her sister look so sickly. It reminded her too vividly of the many emergency-room visits when they were younger and Norah’s asthma wasn’t controlled. Molly flicked on the floor lamp to its lowest setting, bathing the tiny room with warm yellow light, and Norah instantly looked healthier.

“I know we need to find Mom as soon as possible,” Molly said, leaning on the dresser. She was tempted to plop down on the bed next to her sister, but she knew it’d be just as easy to fall asleep here as it would be in Felicity’s bed. Besides, the thought of waking Warrant and getting him to move was too much effort at the moment. “That doesn’t mean you can’t take a few hours off to sleep.”

Norah finally glanced up to meet Molly’s gaze. “I know. I just keep falling down research rabbit holes.”

“I get it. Find out anything interesting?”

“Maybe.” Norah’s voice was hesitant, cautious as always, and Molly knew not to push. Her sister never liked to share information until after she’d confirmed and reconfirmed her facts.

“John’s staying over tonight.”

That caught Norah’s attention. “He is? With you?”

“Uh… no.” She hated that she’d hesitated on her answer, but the mental image that had sprung up in her head had been very distracting—and, despite knowing it was a bad idea, very tempting. “We had to slip away after Dutch’s exploded.”

Exploded?” Norah stared at her, eyes wide, her ignored laptop tilting to the side.

“No one was hurt.” After pausing, Molly corrected herself. “I’m pretty sure no one was hurt. We were out of the building at that point. You might want to add getting the police and fire department reports to your to-do list, though.”

“Okay. You’re not hurt? What about John?”

“I’m fine. John’s a little banged up, but I did a beautifully executed dive roll. You should’ve seen it.” Now that the sense of urgency and danger had faded, she wished that move had been recorded.

Norah’s small smile disappeared a moment after it touched her lips. “You need to be careful, especially when you’re dealing with Sonny Zarver.”

“I know, and I will.” Molly made the words a solemn promise.

From Norah’s nod, she understood and accepted it as such.

“Don’t forget to sleep.” Straightening from her leaning position, Molly turned off the light and slipped into the hall before sticking her head back in. “All the rabbit holes will still be there tomorrow, and everything will probably make more sense.”

Although Norah made a sound of agreement, it was absentminded, and her attention was completely focused on her screen again.

“Good night.” Molly pulled her sister’s door closed as she withdrew, knowing that all the well-intentioned nagging in the world wouldn’t get Norah in bed any sooner. She’d finish when she was done researching, and then she’d sleep until noon.

Turning away from Norah’s bedroom door, Molly found herself face to bare chest with John. She couldn’t stop herself from taking in the broad, muscular expanse before resolutely tipping her head back to meet his gaze. She wasn’t sure why she’d thought that looking up would be any less distracting. His beautiful face—with his mile-long dark lashes and full mouth and those tempting dimples—was just as drool-worthy as the hard planes of his chest. He, of course, noticed her looking, and his teasing grin was fully in place.

“See something you like?” he asked, flexing.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
4.5 stars of slow burn magic.

This is the first of a new series, and you will need to read this one before the next as we are left very much with an unfinished underlying plot – let alone the sisters who are still in need of finding their happily ever after – and there will be so much more to enjoy from Molly, no doubts at all.

We are pitched straight into the Pax sisters bounty hunting business and I love how we get to meet the sisters and their foibles. Molly is the eldest and the centre of this story – although I won't be surprised if she is the centre of every story as she has been bringing up her sisters from a very young age. Her mother definitely abdicated responsibility a long time ago – and ever since has been a liability. In this story though, she goes one step beyond anything done before, and causes the women a really serious problem.

The fun, though, is between Molly and local rival Bounty Hunter, John Carmondy. It is evident immediately to the reader, clearly also to her sisters, but certainly not to the oblivious Molly, that John has very strong feelings for her. He has been around keeping an eye and subtly ensuring her safety for a long while, but recent events mean he needs to be more obvious. Even then Molly doesn't get it... I loved it! In fact, if you like a slow burn you are definitely in for a treat in this book! It is true to say that the mystery takes front and centre for most of the book, with the romance being a low hum which has to take second place... until finally she wakes up! So much fun, I couldn't not stop chuckling and admiring John's consistency!

For a planner and an observant woman, Molly is just the funniest character I have read about in a while when it comes to not understanding why John is there by her side. Can't wait to see who catches the attention of the other Pax sisters.

M/F Romance

Molly is a kick-butt, take-no-prisoners bounty hunter. She is great at her job but has to contend with a mom who is a criminal and siblings whom she looks after. She's snarky, but somewhat clueless in her own love life.

John is also a bounty hunter who has held a candle for Molly forever. He is a constant in her life and he will stop at nothing to protect her. When a situation arises and Molly asks for his help, he jumps at it.

Molly and John had almost a young adult romance going. They didn't have great chemistry, nor was their dialogue profound. It was a sweet story, but I didn't really get the romance vibe from them. I hope that Molly's sisters get their own story, as they are all awesome.

Mary☆☆☆☆
I had not heard about this series but I do love this author’s other series and when this one came across my review feed, I didn't even think about it, I knew I wanted to read it.

Molly Pax and her four sisters are bounty hunters trying to keep their business alive and keep their mother out of jail because she is using them for money, a free place to stay, or a guilt trip any chance she can. Then there is the slimy bail-bondsman who wants Molly to catch a bail jumper. And he will use anything he can, and what her mother gave him to post her bail. Molly only has one chose, to catch the jumper or lose what her and her sisters have.

And you can't forget John Carmondy, a rival bounty hunter that seems to turn up each time Molly is working and close to catching a jumper. While Molly thinks her is trying to steal her bail jumpers, he has another thing in mind. John wants to get to know Molly better and in a more personal way.

Will Molly and her sisters find Sonny, the bail jumper, in time or lose it all? Can she trust John to help or will he steal her jumper? Can they trust her mother to return in time to set the record straight? Will there be a future for Molly and John?

This is a great beginning to a new series that gives you the insight to the sisters, what they do, and a little about how their life is. And don't forget that ending, wow, what is going to happen. I need the next book now.

Katie Ruggle usually has strong alpha males and women who love them in her stories and this series has strong females and the men they claim, which at times they clash but it makes the story even better. So read this new series and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Steven is a widower and he has several kids in tow. When he decides to move back to his home town, he moves back to his tree farm and his three brothers. The kids that he's raising are hilarious and curious, shy and intelligent. I loved that the kids played such a major role in this story. Steven's brothers were somewhat underdeveloped in the story for the large role they played. You were kept guessing about what was going to happen next, for sure, but I also felt slightly lost since they were not really the main characters.

Then you have Camille. She is the quirky resident artist. Despite being kind of a shut in, she does venture out every once in a while. She also has a hilarious, too nosy neighbor. When she sees that Steven is back in town, despite the town gossip and years of people saying that the other brothers were better looking, etc., she can't help but feel like a 12-year-old again.

Steven and Camille are a great couple. They don't have much in common, but their ability to dance around each other was definitely an art in this story. While at times, I wished they behaved less young adult and more adult romance, this was a sweet story and the kids were just icing on a really great story. I am excited to see what everyone gets up to next.

Kit Jernigan and her K9, Justice, are starting a new job in Monroe, Colorado, but when they reach the town, she can't believe her eyes. It looks like a blown-up movie set; the town looks deserted. She notices some people at the VFW and when she goes inside, she sees a few fellow officers. But the offices are kinda stand-offish. They don't really know her and after what happened with their last lieutenant, who can blame them.

Wes March is the local fire spotter, when he sees smoke, he calls it in. But they can't save the house. Wes is interested in getting to know more about Kit. He even calls his sister about dating and advice about girls.

While Kit is keeping an eye on Elena, the latest of Jules "friends," everyone else is trusting her. But Kit has a gut feeling that Elena is not telling all of the truth.

Can Kit get the evidence she needs to make everyone see that Elena is not who she seems? Will Wes ask her out on a date? Will the other officers give Kit and Justice a chance?

I love this series and I think Kit, Wes, and Justice might be my favorites so far. While this series gets better with each book, I wonder how much more the town can take? If you like a story that is a great romantic suspense, then this series is for you. So sit back and enjoy, I hope you love it too.

This is Otto's story and it didn't disappoint. He has been the calm one throughout the series. You don't necessarily need to read the previous books, but it helps because the characters from the previous books do make prominent appearances in this story. However, you do get the backstory.

Sarah is running. She has lived a life of captivity. Her father was a horrible person and her brother is even worse. When she realizes that her life is literally hanging in the balance, she finds a single ray of hope.

When these two characters first meet, it's hilarious and sweet all wrapped in to one. I loved how Otto worked around Sarah and let her have her space when she needed it. Their relationship was so sweet and gentle. Despite his desire to want to hold Sarah and never let go, he allows her to become more comfortable with him. He knows that his presence can be intimidating.

Sarah is so strong and gentle. She is immediately drawn to Otto. When things get dangerous, she learns to trust him quickly, despite her reservations. I loved how she played with Otto and was so quick to bond with the other women in the story.

This story was fast paced and more thriller than romance, but the romance was intertwined nicely in the story. There was a sweetness to the relationship. I can't wait for the next book!

Mary☆☆☆☆
Alice is tired of being treated like a child and held prisoner in her own family home, and now she finds out that her brother plans to marry her off to make himself the leader of both crime families. With the help of a mystery man that helped rescue her, she ends up in Monroe, Colorado. There she meets Jules and Grace, both know exactly what she is going through and will help her and keep her safe.

Otto Gunnersen is a K9 officer with the Monroe PD, he is a gentle man, animal lover, and has a big heart for anyone in need. Watching his partners and friends – Theo and Hugh – fall in love with Jules and Grace, Otto wants to have that too.

When the three officers find out that an "old friend" of Jules is staying for a little while, they all want to know more about her. When Otto sees her for the first time, he is struck speechless, not a single sound made. Alice aka Sarah doesn't know if she can trust these officers because her brother has cops in his pocket.

When Sarah's brother and his army of bad guys show up, all hell breaks loose. And not to mention the snow storm pelting the town. They block the roads in and out of town, helicopters are bombing everything, people might die because Sarah is hiding in this town.

I love this series and this story did not disappoint me, although there were a few slow parts at the beginning, but once I got past that, it was fast paced who is coming after them next. Although Otto and Sarah were sweet and a little slow getting together, they had gone through a lot in a short time and knew what they wanted.

If you are looking for a great romantic suspense, I recommend you read this series in order, because you have to read Jules & Theo and Grace & Hugh's stories first.

This is a great second book in this series. I do suggest reading the previous book as there are several characters that show up again from that story and I reference things from book one in this review.

Kaylee finds herself in such a mess. She has to drop everything and run. Her good friend Penny gives her the name of a mystery man who will help her disappear. Kaylee becomes Grace and lives a life that she didn't know she wanted.

Hugh is hurting – physically, he is injured from helping save Jules and her kids. What he's not looking for is someone to fall in love with. He's all about the job. However, now that he sees Theo with Jules, he begins to think that he wants that too. Lexi, his companion for years, is someone he trusts with his life.

When Hugh and Grace meet, it is hate at first sight and hate even more when Hugh opens his mouth. Grace isn't looking to meet anyone and definitely doesn't want to stay in this hidden life. However, the more she's targeted and the more that Hugh saves her, feelings can't help but develop.

I did think that Kaylee/Grace did give her story fairly quickly in the story, which was kind of sad. However, the back and forth banter between Grace and Hugh was hilarious and playful. I really enjoyed this story and can't wait for what comes next.

This book is funny, emotional, and just dangerous enough.

Mary☆☆☆☆
I found this second story in this series to be funny, suspenseful, and the banter between Hugh and Grace/Kaylee made me laugh many times.

Kaylee was living the life – she had her dream job, a nice condo, and living in LA. One night while having dinner with her boyfriend at his uncle's house, she takes a wrong turn and witnesses something that puts her life in danger. Now she is on the run and ends up in Monroe, Colorado. The place where everyone that needs to hide seems to end up.

Hugh Murdoch is a K9 officer with the Monroe Police Department, along with his K9, Lexi, they are on medical leave because Hugh got shot. But he can't stay away from the job and heal. He is ready to go back to work and when he meets Grace, he wants to learn what he can from her because he can tell she is lying. So he will do a background check to find out who she really is.

But there is someone after one of them, is it Hugh or Grace? So Grace has to tell Hugh who she really is and he vows to keep her safe. But who will keep him safe? Will they find out who is after them? Will Hugh and Grace give in to the feeling they have for each other? What happens when they solve the case, will Grace go back to LA?

I am enjoying this series and can't wait for the next one. Katie Ruggle has a way to bring out these K9 officers and their partners that makes the stories great. I hope you give this series a shot and enjoy it as much as I have.

Run to Ground by Katie Ruggle

He lost his mentor.
He lost his K9 partner.
He almost lost his will to live.
But when a ruthless killer targets a woman on the run, Theo and his new K9 companion will do whatever it takes to survive—and save the woman neither can live without.

Grieving the death of his partner, Theo Bosco has no room in his life for distractions. Though his instincts scream that he should avoid Juliet 'Jules' Jackson, he can't seem to stay away. It doesn't help that Theo's new K9 companion has fallen head over paws with Jules's rambunctious family.

Or that when he's with her, Theo finally knows peace.

When Jules rescued her siblings, whisking them away to the safety of the beautifully rugged Colorado Rockies, she never expected to catch the eye—or the heart—of a cop. Yet as Jules struggles to fight her growing attraction to the brooding K9 officer, another threat lurks much closer to home...

And this time, there's no escape.

Rachael☆☆☆☆
This is my first book by this author, but the blurb was too interesting for me to pass up. What can I say, a K9 story gets me every time. While I will say that I absolutely adored the storyline with the dog and Theo and how the kids help, I do have to say that I wasn't as invested in the love story or how Jules got to where she was.

I felt like the whole thing with Jules and her siblings and her past employer was all too hastily thrown together because I never really understood how all of it came together except for the small mentions in tiny passing comments the characters made or thoughts that were shared. I would've really liked to see that part of the story expanded upon so that we could really connect with Jules more.

Theo was... interesting. I can see how he let his attraction and curiosity for Jules lead him toward her when he feels like he should be running the other way. I really don't ever get how he could simply say what he does at the end. It really didn't fit for me, not with his profession and who I came to think of him as.

However, when it came to the drama and the kids, I did enjoy it. It was different and interesting and well written and for that, I have to ultimately come to the conclusion that it was a good book.

Mary☆☆☆☆
Theo Bosco lost his K9 partner and his mentor, and now is working with Viggy, his mentor's K9, who doesn't want to work with anyone. Viggy knows his partner is gone and can Theo help him survive?

Jules takes off with her siblings to save their lives. They end up in Colorado and Jules catches the eye of a local cop. Just what they don't need. When things start happening, like Jules seeing something or someone outside her house, Norman showing up at her house and other strange things, she has to wonder if they have been found. But Theo is always there to save them.

Can Jules tell Theo what she is running from? Will Theo finally let someone in and be happy? Will Viggy finally become the happy and confident dog he once was?

I loved Katie Ruggle's Search and Rescue series and couldn't wait to see how this series would begin. It was interesting, but I would have liked to have had more from Jules’ past to get to where she was. It seemed to be missing some parts. And Theo's past was heartbreaking and poor Viggy.. Altogether though, I liked the story and can't wait for more in this series.

Theo is a great cop. He has been sort of surly, but overall, he is well liked and knows when something is amiss. Because he lost his partner to a suicide, he is kind of floundering. Viggy is his fallen partner’s K-9 police dog and both of them are having a difficult time. Theo needs to find a way to get Viggy to come out of his own depression, but with Theo struggling too, it’s not an easy request. When he’s hanging out at the local diner, he notices a new waitress. He is instantly drawn to her, but he is also suspicious of her too.

Jules is on the run. She’s running with her siblings, but she’s on the run and so scared that they will be found out that she’s very jittery. Because cops frequent the diner that she works at, she just has to get over her fear and try to behave like everything is normal.

When things begin to happen around town, Jules and Theo form a unique bond. Theo is able to help Jules with her siblings and gain her trust. The kids who are staying with Jules are able to help Viggy come out of his depression and help Theo create a new bond with him.

Overall, this was a great mystery and budding romance. There are still a lot of questions left unanswered at the conclusion of this story, but I can’t wait to see what happens next.

In Safe Hands by Katie Ruggle

In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder...

He was her hero,
But one wrong move ended their future before it could begin.
Now he'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe,
Even if that means turning against one of his own.

As a member of the Field County Sheriff's Department, Chris Jennings is used to having it rough. The Colorado Rockies aren't for the weak-of-spirit, but he's devoted his life to upholding the law-and to protecting the one woman he knows he can never have. He'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Daisy Little has lived in agoraphobic terror for over eight years. Trapped within a prison of her own making, she watches time pass through her bedroom window. Daisy knows she'll never be a part of the world...until the day she becomes the sole witness of a terrible crime that may finally tear the Search & Rescue brotherhood apart for good.

Daisy Little is the girl everyone thinks has gone completely crazy. After she witnessed her mother being shot at the age of sixteen, Daisy has refused to leave her home. All windows sealed and she hasn't been outside in over eight years. With her father bringing groceries and other things she might need and Deputy Chris Jennings, her best friend, stopping by to check on her, Daisy doesn't see a need for anything else.

While Daisy can't sleep most nights, she looks out her bedroom window to see what her neighbors might be doing, when she notices someone moving near the empty house across the street. The person is moving something in a tarp and when they place it in the back of one of the sheriff’s SUVs, a boot falls on the ground. She calls Deputy Chris and the sleuthing begins.

Chris brings Lou and the rest of the gang over and the girls discuss the random fires and killings. When the guys are there, they all use Daisy's home gym for Chris to show them a few self-defense tricks.

Will they figure out who is behind the murder and fires before it is too late? Will Daisy and Chris finally let their feelings for each other blossom? Can Daisy conquer her fear before it is too late?

I loved each story, but I think Daisy and Chris have stolen my heart. Her past broke my heart and Chris was there to save her in the end. This series is fantastic and I loved everything about it. It has the right amount of romance and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat and to keep you guessing because I never guessed who done it. Awesome job Katie Ruggle.

Sarah☆☆☆
My reaction to this series has been lukewarm from the start. I really, really hate cliffhangers and I’ve struggled to warm to some of the predictable chick-lit styled women in the series. After three consecutive cliffhangers, I was hoping for a really satisfying end to the story, but after a dramatic and explosive climax, this book just sorta limps to the end. I wanted resolution, but motives weren’t properly explained and loose ends from previous books were left hanging.

I struggled with Daisy’s character. Her agoraphobia is an interesting twist but the housebound woman really didn’t keep my attention for the whole novel. I struggled to believe that the paranoid self-defense expert suffering from insomnia was also a chatty, junk-food binging girl who loved hanging out with her new girlfriends. She felt older than her years until I had to endure her preteen girl dating anxieties later in the story.

Deputy Chris is handsome, kind, and infinitely patient. But there isn’t really anything interesting about him. He is perfect but more than a little boring. The friends-to-lovers romance seems to drift in the friend zone for most of the story before rushing straight to committed, serious, and monogamous.

I can’t say much about the actual plot of the story because it is the much awaited conclusion to the three previous books. The action in this story is more realistic than the action scenes in book three. I’m still not sure I wanted to know the identity of the bad guys from the start of this book. Knowing built tension in some parts but it ruined the suspense in others.

We see all of the previous couples together, bonding, eating, working out, and sleuthing. By the fourth book, all of the men and women seemed interchangeable to me. The men are muscular alpha males and the women are their clever, beautiful helpers.

My response is completely personal preference. This series wasn’t a great fit for me, but the cliffhanger endings kept me going to the end. I’m sure other readers will have their own responses to the books.
