Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis

Meet cute...

Run for the hills—temporarily. That's Colbie Albright's plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbie's so over it that she's under it. She's also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But she's pretty sure Spencer Baldwin won't be a stranger for long.

Make merry...

Spence's commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesn't have to worry about the powerful—okay, crazy hot chemistry—he's got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself... just because she's gorgeous and a great listener just because she gets Spence immediately doesn't mean he won't be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

…and hope for a miracle.

Now the clock's ticking for Colbie and Spence: Two weeks to cut loose. Two weeks to fall hard. Two weeks to figure out how to make this Christmas last a lifetime.

To escape her demanding family and the looming deadline of her next book, Colbie heads to the airport to get away and winds up in San Francisco at the historic fountain in the court of Spence's building. When a dog Spence is walking knocks Colbie into the fountain, she meets Spence, who gives her a room in his building to stay in until her plans return home on Christmas Eve.

Spence and Colbie embark on a romance knowing that it has an expiration date of Christmas Eve, only a few weeks away. Neither of them has had great success with love in the past and Spence puts his work before everything else in his life. For the first time, he is finding balance between work and life thanks to Colbie. Neither is looking for love, but it finds them anyway.

The fourth instalment of the Heartbreaker Bay series includes characters we already know and love from previous books and we finally get the story behind Eddie, the homeless man who lives in the alley. But you don't need to have read the whole series to read Chasing Christmas Eve. Each book can be read as a standalone.

I loved everything about Chasing Christmas Eve. This story made my heart happy and gave me exactly what I want from a contemporary romance – a great story with a happy ending. If you are a contemporary romance lover like I am, this is the perfect book for you.

This is the fourth in the series – and really just brought everything together for me. DO read these in order, as they are such fun reads, and super sexy too. Both the men and the women in this series are just the people you would want to surround yourself with, if you could!

Spencer is the mad professor of the gang – and the only one who beats Elle on poker night. He has accepted that he is better off alone – and dedicated to his work – than failing at a relationship, as his Grandpa did. (...and wasn't that revelation a lovely element to this book!)

However, when Colbie is pitched into the courtyard fountain of his building, thanks to his canine charge, he discovers that maybe there is someone who will change his mind. His friends are terribly protective of him, and Elle in particular is very cautious of his obvious interest. But, as he points out, all of them were avoiding a relationship until the right person came along!

Inevitably they do spend time together, accepting the expiration date of Christmas Eve. But whereas they both liked the idea of having an out, as they get closer, this becomes a silent barrier between them, that neither dares address. I found the use of the mobile phone interruptions a very effective vehicle for the real world pulling them apart. Of course, Ms. Shalvis weaves her usual magic and what seems hopeless is transformed into the ending that every romance reader desires.

For a fun, sexy, cute, and memorable story with delicious characters and heartwarming throughout, this is a must buy! Be warned though, if you start this at bedtime you may still be awake when the sun rises.

Spence is tired of being the center of attention due to his wealth and looks. Since the story a supposed friend wrote about him, he’s been under siege from women of all kinds. The phone calls, packages, and naked pictures are overwhelming. Spence is brilliant, yet awkward. Skipping grades, entering college early and graduating with his masters at 22, made him a little boy in an adult world. In an effort to protect his privacy, Spence has surrounded himself with friends who would do anything to keep him from being hurt.

Colbie can relate. She’s running away from home, away from her needy family, her editor, and her agent. Everyone has ignored her cries for help and not knowing what else to do, she hops a flight to San Francisco in hopes to find some peace and her muse.

When Spence and Colbie meet, a connection is formed between them. Spence does something he never does, he lets her in and gives her a place to stay in the building he owns. Both know that there is an expiration date on this relationship and agree that it’s for the best to adhere to it. After all, neither is good at relationships.

Is it hereditary or something they tell themselves to avoid being hurt? Only time will tell.
