A Cowboy's Home by RJ Scott Blog Tour

One burned and broken man finds his way home. Can he find peace in the arms of a man easy to love?

Justin made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, battling domestic terrorism, never the man he really was, using hate to avenge the death of his best friend. The friend he'd killed.

What he doesn’t count on is getting shot, and if he's going to die he wants it to be on Crooked Tree soil. Home.

Sam is as much a part of Crooked Tree as any of the families, and the offer to buy into the ranch is a dream come true. But falling for a hidden, secretive, injured man isn’t the way to keep his head in the game.

This series is so much more than m/m romance. There is intensity and passion in the relationships between all the characters on Crooked Tree Ranch and I love each new installment.

In the third book, Justin is the very damaged prodigal son who returns to the ranch to die quietly. And Sam is the chef who finds him in an isolated cabin. I loved the quiet chemistry between these two men, but I also loved seeing the relationships heal and rebuild between Justin and the friends and family he left behind.

If Ariel Tachna’s Lang Downs series is my favourite all-time cowboy m/m series, this Montana series is starting to tick all of the same favourite boxes: complex characters that develop over the course of the series, a sense of community on a working ranch, intense love connections, and a helping of mystery, intrigue, and excitement.

With Justin’s story, this third book veers slightly off-ranch. I felt plausibility slip a few times during this story as Justin’s history is revealed. I found this darker than the previous books and I am still a little unsure about the pace of Sam and Justin’s romance.

But when RJ Scott writes, I am able to overlook just about anything because she always drags me in, drags me under, and makes me truly feel her characters. I loved both Sam and Justin and I thoroughly loved their story.

I love this series and I have been waiting for this book. I'm telling you it didn't disappoint.

It’s a lot darker than the rest of the series. We find out what happened to Justin all those years ago and where he has been.

I have always liked Sam, but I really loved his fierceness in this book. He knew that Justin needed him and he wanted to protect him.

As always, it’s great to see the other characters back again.

I honestly can't wait for the next one.

Let me start by saying you need to read the previous two books in the series before reading this one, you will miss so much back story if you don’t. That being said, I freaking LOVED this book. At the end of the second book, I was so upset that we were going to have to wait until October to get this book. I thank the author for releasing it early, and DAMN was it good. I don’t want to give anything away, but let me tell you it would have been worth the wait until October. Sam, gosh, what can I say about him other than he is an amazing man. Justin, we learn so much and find out so much and you can’t help but cry about everything he has been through. The author said there will probably be another book and I can’t flipping wait! If you loved the first two books, you will love this one too!

Characters: Well written
Sex: Yes
Religious: No
Would I recommend to others: Yes
More than one book in the series: Yes
Genre: M/M Romance
Would I read more by this author: Yes

As a newer member of the team at the Crooked Tree Ranch, Sam hasn't met Justin but knows of his disappearance. When Sam discovers an injured man in one of the unused cabins, he doesn't realise that man is Justin.

Justin struggles to recover from his injuries and dealing with the emotions that arise as his family and friends learn of his return. He holds on to Sam for comfort. Sam takes care of him and doesn't judge. My favourite thing about A Cowboy's Home is the way that Sam and Justin make such a strong connection using actions more than words.

Even through this story deals with Justin's violent past and the accident that took him away from his family, I found A Cowboy's Home to be comforting m/m romance. I devoured it too quickly because I felt like it was over too soon. I'm really loving this series and I was pleased to discover that there will be a fourth book. I look forward to reading it.

Wow! I thought the previous book in the series was moving, but this is heartbreaking in places...starting from page one in fact!! You must read the first two books to get the background to the story, and then delve in with your heart in your mouth as we discover just what is in store for Justin.

In a way, it is difficult to say more without spilling the beans, so I think that you should trust that Ms. Scott does this story justice, and satisfies everything that a reader could wish. It is deeply moving, poignant, and sensual. We get to catch up with the whole Crooked Tree family, and move everyone's story forward. There are so many lovely touches that just fix you firmly in the characters' midst, from Sophie's support for Marcus to Sam designing Josh's cake; and many more besides. Sometimes detail is fixed on the furniture, but here it is smalls acts, and gestures which just bring the place to life.

Thank you Ms. Scott for giving us a degree of closure on the story of the missing boys, and for giving Sam the kind of family that he was denied at birth. He deserved it, and so did we. How long do we really have to wait until you can give us another treat? Hopefully not too long!

I’m not sure whose story I was looking forward to more – Sam’s or Justin’s. So I guess I’m lucky that Scott decided to make a match between the temperamental chef and the coerced assassin. What’s even better is that A Cowboy’s Home was a believable storyline in light of the events from book two, The Rancher’s Son. And yes, you do need to read this series in order so that you can understand what’s going on at the ranch and why Justin’s return is so significant. My review assumes that you’ve read the previous installments, so if you haven’t, do NOT read on as it does contain spoilers for book two.

With the encounter at the end of The Rancher’s Son indicating that Justin was indeed alive, but he’d been led to believe that Adam had been killed on that fateful night – the same night that Adam believed Justin had perished on – I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. Just like everyone else on the Crooked Tree Ranch, I had to know where Justin had been for the past twelve years and what he had done that prevented him from returning home. None of my theories came close. Preying upon Justin’s grief and guilt over Adam’s death, Justin was recruited to a black ops team whose primary focus was combating domestic terrorism, including the men who were responsible for his injuries and Adam’s death. Upon discovering that Adam wasn’t dead and that the past twelve years of his life had been based on a lie, Justin wanted out. However, the people he worked for aren’t keen on employees resigning because they know too much. Without revealing how he achieved his departure, by the time Justin makes it to Crooked Tree Ranch, he’s suffering from lead poisoning and infection, so he’s just looking for a quiet place to die because he knows it’s not safe for his family if he’s found there. But Justin proves to be tougher than even he expected, and while he might be knocking on death’s door, carelessness in his movements around the ranch lead to his discovery by Sam. So as not to spoil the book for you, that’s where the details stop because as the story continues and Justin gets better, he and Sam get closer, and we learn a lot of devastating information about what Justin did while he was gone. Yet even as he heals the breach between him and his family, Justin still has a name on his list and feels he cannot rest until his final mission is complete.

Due to the covert nature of Justin’s black ops involvement, there is quite a bit more suspense in this installment than the previous books. Yet the bond that he forges with Sam while he’s recovering from his injuries insures that the romance aspect of A Cowboy’s Home is strong. Because we get to spend time in Justin’s head, I found his self-assessment to be quite sad. It’s clear that he’s bought into the assassin label and, even though his actions saved thousands of lives, he feels he’s undeserving of family and happiness. Fortunately for Justin, Sam knows he is deserving of happiness – especially in light of what we learn about his family – and Sam considers a future with Justin in it as the key to his happily ever after. So while Sam might be known as an unrepentant flirt, he’s also a man who recognizes what he wants and has the patience and persistence to get it – if only the object of his desire will cooperate. I thoroughly enjoyed A Cowboy’s Home and was quite excited to read the author’s note at the end revealing that another book is in the works for the Montana series. I don’t know who it will feature, but you can be sure I’ll be looking out for it. Thanks for another great read, Ms. Scott.
