The New York Times bestselling Elemental Assassin
series continues with a new e-novella--from the point of view of Finnegan Lane,
the foster brother of Gin Blanco, and a fan favorite of readers of the series.
The fallout from his disastrous “family reunion” in Bitter Bite has left Finn feeling hurt, angry, and depressed. He can barely stand to look at himself in the mirror, much less eat any of the delicious barbecue from Gin’s famed Pork Pit restaurant.
But when the funeral for a slain security guard at his bank turns into a showdown with some nasty underworld giants, Finn knows that he must act in order to protect an innocent family.
Finnegan Lane might be the most unwanted man in Ashland these days, but he’s determined to try to make amends for his past mistakes...

I believe this goes without saying, this is not a standalone, as it's 14.5 in the Elemental Assassins series. Jennifer Estep has created a fascinating urban fantasy world – start at the beginning (Spider's Bite) with kick-butt Gin the assassin.
Unwanted is a short story narrated by Gin's brother, Finn, showcasing the aftermath of earlier events. Finn is suffering from guilt and a healthy dose of self-loathing after his mother tried to rob the bank where he is employed. After a few of his fellow employees were killed, his current coworkers not only refuse to trust him, they blame him. But he blames himself too...
Attending a funeral, Finn overhears something he shouldn't featuring the widow of a fallen coworker negotiating with the local muscle over gambling debts amassed by her brother-in-law. To assuage his guilt, Finn becomes involved.
The first 15 – 20% of this short story had a lot of info dumpage, where Ms. Estep backtracks to play catch-up so the reader wouldn't be confused to the rest of the events of the story. I found myself skimming those portions, but read every word thereafter. If you aren't current in the series, please note this short story will be a spoiler then.
Many were undoubtedly upset with Finnegan after the last installment, and Unwanted gives his version of events, causing the reader to empathize while he tries to make amends.
Jennifer Estep is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
Her Elemental Assassin series follows the life and times of Gin “the Spider” Blanco, a barbecue restaurant owner who also happens to be an assassin with magical control over the elements of Ice and Stone.
The Mythos Academy series focuses on Gwen Frost, a 17-year-old Gypsy girl who has the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. She studies at Mythos Academy, a school for the descendants of ancient warriors.
Her Bigtime paranormal romance books feature sexy superheroes, evil ubervillains, and smart, sassy gals looking for love.
Estep’s new Black Blade series is about 17-year-old thief Lila Merriweather, who has a Talent for sight, along with the ability to take magic others used against her to boost her own powers. She tries not to get involved with the Families who control much of the town, but ends up in the middle of a potential turf war.
