Wind Chime Café by Sophie Moss Audio Tour

When single mother, Annie Malone, purchases a quirky Main Street cafe on Heron Island, she thinks she's finally turned her dream of opening her own restaurant into a reality. Hearing rumors that a developer is about to build a five-star resort on the sleepy Chesapeake Bay island, she plans to transform the cafe into a premier upscale bistro. But Navy SEAL, Will Dozier, has no intention of selling his grandparents' property to a developer. Back on Heron Island for the first time in ten years and secretly struggling with PTSD, Will decides that a fling with the new girl is the perfect way to help him "get his head straight." The last thing Will expects is to fall in love...with his hometown and with Annie. But Will's life and career are in San Diego with the SEALs. Can Annie's love and the healing magic of the island be enough to convince him to stay?

I wanted to like this book more than I did. Will is a Navy SEAL on leave who returns to Harran Island to sell his grandparents’ home and property. Will enlisted in the Navy after the attacks on 9/11 killed his mother and sister and has been fighting the good fight ever since. Six months ago, his squad came under attack and he was the only member to come out uninjured. Now, the memories and nightmares are unrelenting.

Six weeks ago, the unthinkable happened. Annie's daughter was in a classroom where a school shooting occurred. The eight year old Taylor had survived, but has been left with nightmares and survivors’ guilt. Moving to Harran Island, Annie hopes the new environment and small town will make Taylor feel safe again. Doing the right thing for her child isn't always easy especially when all of Annie's savings is tied up in the new restaurant she wants to open in anticipation of the new resort opening.

The story is sound and relevant in today's climate. However, I wished the author would have addressed Will's PTSD more thoroughly other than the brief plot point that was raised and never fully explored or addressed. There were other plot points that were introduced, briefly explored and settled rather quickly. I wish the ending could have been expanded a little more to address a few of these points.

This is a solid romance and I would listen to other books by this author.

It is rare for me to listen to an audiobook, but after this, I may indulge more frequently! Sometimes being locked to the written word means that reading time is limited. Instead I was able to slip my audible device in my pocket and headphones on, whilst getting on with some chores. The story was the perfect distraction, and made the duties pass in a flash. I have also listened in my car, but sometimes I did realise I had been concentrating too much on the story, not the driving!

I really enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next book being released. The characters are a wonderful mixture of small town, and also world weary. How Annie has had to cope with her daughter's trauma, and how Will deals with what he has seen whilst at war, and why, are just the start. Their dance around each other is beautifully played out, and both of them have a change of heart, and mind that is very satisfying for the engaged reader. Lovely, sweet, and yet clearly passionate romance, that I would think should appeal to almost any reader of romantic fiction. And more than that, it brings to life a sheltered, special place in the world that deserves recognition and appreciation. Being able to hear wind chimes, as there is no roar of traffic, and walk through meadows of butterflies sounds pretty much like perfection to me!
