Twenty-Nine Hours to Eternity by Elizabeth Noble – Warmest Wishes

Being gay and pagan can make for a lonely holiday season, as Ian knows well. He’s used to celebrating alone. The last place he expects to meet a like-minded guy is at LAX during a twenty-nine-hour layover.

Ian’s never felt so comfortable or compatible with another man, even if there is an air of mystery to Race.

Race is no stranger to holiday isolation, and he decides they should seize the opportunity they’ve been given and observe the Saturnalia the way it was meant to be. A grand celebration ensues, where every moment is special and every meal a feast. The ancient traditions take on new meaning as the men find meaning in each other. But each of them has a destiny and for their paths to continue together, it’ll take a kind of magic that hasn’t been seen in centuries.

Twenty-Nine Hours to Eternity is another one of my favorite advent calendar stories from this year’s collection. Growing up in the Southern Bible Belt, I wasn’t exposed to many pagan rituals – at least, not the ones that weren’t co-opted into holiday traditions while ignoring their roots. Fortunately for me, my family were transplants and open-mindedness was encouraged, including my fascination with Greek mythology. I’m not sure why I never delved into Roman mythology, but my limited knowledge of the subject is part of what made this particular story so interesting to me as I can’t actually recall ever hearing about Saturnalia. But it was Ian and Race who really made the story. Well, and that beginning.

I’m a sucker for well-written stories that show a glimpse of the end of the tale to build suspense over the weeks, days, or hours leading up to that fateful event. Granted, the countdown style format of storytelling doesn’t often lend itself well to romance and I wouldn’t expect it to work in a novelette. However, Elizabeth Noble did an outstanding job of opening the story with an extreme scene, backtracking twenty-nine hours to show how Ian and Race met, then showing how their short time together was spent, and how a bond was formed over the course of hours. Not only did I find myself invested in learning more about Ian, but I had to know what had happened in the preceding twenty-nine hours that had led him to the heartbreaking scene at the beginning. And while I enjoyed watching Ian and Race meet and spend time together, I was awestruck when the twist was revealed and Ian was offered the choice of a lifetime. It was one of the most unexpected happy endings I’ve ever read, which is probably why I loved it so much. The mammoths were a nice touch, too.

Mystery, action, chills and thrills spiced with romance and desire. Elizabeth Noble started telling stories before she actually knew how to write, and her family was very happy when she learned to put words on a page. Those words turned into books and fanfiction that turned into a genuine love of M/M romance fiction. Being able to share her works with Dreamspinner is really a dream come true. She has a real love for a good mystery complete with murder and twisty plots as well as all things sci-fi, futuristic, and supernatural and a bit of an unnatural interest in a super-volcano in Wyoming.

Elizabeth has three grown children and is now happily owned by an adorable mixed breed canine princess, a spunky Welsh Corgi and their sidekick, tabby cat. She lives in her native northeast Ohio, the perfect place for gardening and winter and summer sports (go Tribe and Cavs!) and stargazing all year long. When she’s not writing she’s working as a veterinary nurse, so don’t be surprised to see her men with a pet or three who are a very big part of their lives.

Elizabeth received several amateur writing awards. Since being published several of her novels have received Honorable Mentions in the Rainbow Awards. Jewel Cave was a runner up in the Gay Mystery/Thriller category in the 2015 Rainbow Awards. Ringed Love was a winner in the Gay Fantasy Romance category of the 2016 Rainbow Awards.
