Hero for the Holidays by Charles Payseur – Warmest Wishes

Cody travels from Metro City to the Caribbean island lair of Dr. Devious to look after the place while the supervillain is in space for the holidays… and maybe to mend his broken heart. With Christmas fast approaching, Cody is desperate to avoid reminders of his recent disastrous breakup, and a few weeks of sun and relaxation sound perfect—until a drunk (but very cute) superhero crashes the party by literally crashing onto the beach.

And that’s just the start of Cody’s problems—angry shark-men, mysterious lava creatures, and a malfunctioning AI all make his holiday getaway anything but relaxing. Amid the chaos of his adventures in lair-sitting, though, Cody might find just what he needs—a new chance at love.

Angela☆☆☆☆
Having read The Werewolf before Christmas as part of last year’s advent calendar, I was better prepared for Payseur’s writing style and the over-the-top characters in the Spandex and Superpowers series. With that said, I enjoyed Hero for the Holiday and found the broken-hearted Cody impossible not to like. Hoping that time and distance away from the painful reminders of his ex, Cody jumps at the chance to lair-sit for his best friend’s supervillain boyfriend for a month while they take an off-world vacation for the holidays. See? It’s an over-the-top setup that just gets more and more ridiculous as the story progresses, but in all the ways a comic book inspired, Saturday morning cartoon should. I really hope that if the author reads my review that he doesn’t take offense at my inadequate frame of reference of comparison for potential readers because, despite my badly worded comparison, Hero for the Holiday is a gem of a read. It’s not my typical fare, which makes its inclusion in the Advent Calendar perfect because it gives me just enough story to entertain me and make me grin as Cody rescues an inebriated superhero, bests a group of shark-men, befriends a lava being, and defeats a power-hungry AI program, all while becoming enamored with the mender of his heart. I’ll admit, I’m a bit curious about the other stories in this series and suspect they’ll be joining my library soon.
