The diagnosis of a chronic stomach condition leaves
thirty-two-year-old Sergeant Jed Cooper with little choice but to call time on
his Army career. Then on the dusty streets of Kirkuk, an ambush gone tragically
wrong decimates his team, and he returns to the US with a shattered leg and the
memory of his best friend dying in his arms.
Life in his sleepy hometown proves intolerable until he finds solace in a lakeside cabin with vivacious young carpenter, Max O’Dair. In the shadow of the epilepsy that periodically plagues Max, he and Jed form an unspoken bond. After a late night episode, Jed realizes how much Max means to him, and life has taught him not to waste time.
But the lines between contentment and complacency are blurred. Things left hidden resurface to tear through their world, and before they can repair the damage, death comes to call again. Faces, past and present, rally around them to weather the storm, but before long, they are left with only love.

I adored this story. I was drawn in at the beginning by Jed’s quiet strength. Jed leaves the Army having developed gastroparesis and is recovering after being shot in the thigh. Even though he is staying with his brother and his family, it felt to me like Jed was alone and adrift and I wanted someone to take care of him.
I got my wish when Jed moves in with this sister-in-law’s brother, Max. Max, who has epilepsy, lives in a lake side cabin with his service dog, Flo. He lives simply, growing his own vegetables, keeping chickens, and running a small business. This simple life really appealed to me, and Max’s simple life and understanding is exactly what Jed needs.
There is a lovely slow build up to the emotions between the men. I love the focus on their emotional and physical well-being and that any physical intimacy they share comes long after emotional intimacy has developed. Both men have experienced loss and had difficult pasts which, to me, made what Jed and Max go through to get their happiness just that bit sweeter.
Only Love is a beautiful and emotionally satisfying story and it gets five stars from me.

This book gave me the feels. Ugh... I felt like I was there in the story, living it as Jed and Max were. I loved both men and I loved reading their journey. Jed and Max both have issues that they deal with daily. Max even has a support dog, Flo, who is with him all the time. It made my heart melt when Max said he sometimes gets someone to take Flo for a night so she can just be a normal dog. Jed and Max had a lot of things to work through. Their relationship built slowly and was worth the time it took to get there. This was a beautiful story, there was no instant this or instant that, it was truly a wonderful book.
