Home for Christmas by RJ Scott Blog Tour

Can Connor show River a real family Christmas?

When Connor finds River on the roof of the campus admin building, he doesn’t know what to do. His friend is drunk, and shouting into a snowstorm, a bottle of vodka in his hand. The easy part is getting River down; the hard part is insisting River comes home with Connor for Christmas.

River doesn’t have a family, or any place outside of college that he calls home. Not that it matters to him; he’s happy being alone for Christmas in his budget motel, watching reruns of Elf. Only, Connor keeps telling wildly improbable stories of the perfect family celebrations at his parents’ ranch in Texas, and it’s wearing River down. He didn’t ask to be kidnapped. He didn’t want to fall in love with the entire Campbell-Hayes family. But he does.

From one Christmas to the next. This is Connor’s year to rescue River, and himself, for them both to mess things up, make things right, fall in lust and finally, for Connor to show the man he loves what being part of a family can mean.

M/M Romance

Connor and River have a somewhat complicated relationship. They are friends first – study partners. Connor is a whiz when it comes to math and helps River with their statistics class. While they form an amazing friendship, feelings begin to develop. One crazy night, those feelings bubble to the surface. However, after that encounter, neither really knows what's happening or what they should do next.

When Connor comes across a drunk River – a River doing some risky things – it creates a worry within Connor so deep that he decides he can't leave River alone right now.

I loved getting to know River. While he comes from a difficult past, he knows that moving forward is the only way. He has his own issues that he works through with the help of Connor and Connor's family. Connor is also working through his own "growing up." I liked seeing Connor growing and changing. Jack and Riley were the ever in love couple and supportive parents. They even were sounding boards for both men.

This was a fantastic addition. My only tiny issue with it was the very ending of this installment. It felt incredibly rushed. I wished we would have had more time with them. Seen their accomplishments and shared in them. But overall, I loved this story.

This is the ninth book in the Texas series, and continues the story of the Campbell-Hayes dynasty. In this book, Connor, Jack and Riley's son, is the central character – well as much as anyone can try and overshadow those two!

Connor is coming to the end of his college life and has made an unlikely friend in a college team diver called River. They had a one-night encounter, conversations about which have been avoided by both of them, embarrassed and worried that the other didn't feel it meant anything. Of course, they do in fact both really like each other, and it takes some Christmas magic at the D to help them realise the truth.

We get the bounty that is the festive season with the family, and watch as Connor grows up emotionally. He has a sharp reminder of just how little support some people have, and just how much family makes a difference.

From page one to the end of the epilogue, I was happily transported back to the wonderful world created by RJ Scott, and will happily return every time I get the chance!

This is a very sweet Christmas romance and fans of the series will love catching up with the Campbell-Hayes family. I couldn’t quite believe that Riley and Jack’s twins were grown and at university, but I did enjoy the shift in family dynamics. And I loved River, the troubled stray that Connor brings home for the holidays

Connor is wonderfully warm in this story and I love his quiet, earnest nature. As Riley and Jack’s son, Connor has had a much gentler life than most of the men in this series. River balances him out and his past makes him more like the other men on the ranch. These two are sweet together and I love the friendship at the heart of their relationship.

With some of the focus of the book on catching up with Riley, Jack and the others at the ranch, I felt that a little bit of Connor and River’s story gets lost. I’m not sure we see River fully work through his past and I felt like the ending was a bit too easy and a bit too quick.

This series has always been a little bit more miss than hit for me. It starts as a Texan soap opera in true Dallas style and while it has become a little bit more realistic over the nine books, the series is still very much traditional romance and I’ve always found it a little over the top for my tastes. I think the writing is definitely stronger in this story than it was in the first book but there are other RJ Scott series that I much prefer.
