A Way With Words & A Way With You by Lane Hayes Audiobook Tour

Two brothers and two stories in the big city…

A Way With Words

Tony De Luca is a simple guy. He works for his uncle’s Brooklyn-based construction firm. And he knows from experience that keeping his head down and doing his job is the best way to deal with the meddlesome family members he sees daily. They think he’s quiet and maybe a little awkward but the truth is more complicated. Tony has a secret he isn’t ready or willing to share. He’s an expert at avoiding familial scrutiny. At least he was until the sexy guitar player showed up.

Remy Nelson is a small-town, free-spirited guy looking for a new life in the big city. He stays busy by playing his instrument on a Manhattan street corner during the day and bartending at night. Remy is more interested in finding steady employment than a mate, but he can’t deny his attraction to the dreamy construction worker with soulful eyes, a kind heart, and a unique way with words. Falling for Remy wasn’t what Tony expected, but he knows keeping him will require courage. And truth.

A Way With You

Reeve Nelson is determined to make it in Manhattan. He’s hardworking, dedicated and willing to put in the extra hours required to be successful at his new job at a prestigious real estate firm in the city. There’s no way he’s going back to small-town living and an ex-girlfriend who won’t let go. But his boss isn’t making it easy.

Leo Rodriguez enjoys his reputation as a ruthless businessman. He’s a lone wolf who’s scraped his way from the gutter to rebuild his life and launch a distinguished career on his terms. When an opportunity to expand in the market comes up, Leo wants the eager new agent with a sense of wonder on the project. However, nothing goes quite as planned. Reeve expected to be intimidated and overwhelmed by Leo, but the explosive mutual attraction and fierce desire between them is a big surprise. Neither man is looking for love and yet, something special just might happen if they can find their way… together.

I think what I enjoyed most about this audiobook is that the two stories have tones that are just as different as the two brothers. Remy is an easy going, free-spirited musician and his romance with Tony is sweet and measured (bad musical pun, huh?). But seriously, I loved how accepting Remy is of Tony’s situation and his willingness to move their relationship forward at Tony’s pace. It’s not always easy to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and understand their familial struggles, especially when your own family is accepting, so I appreciated that Remy didn’t add to Tony’s emotional turmoil by pressuring him to come out and/or introduce him to Tony’s family. It was certainly another level of angst the author could have added to the story, but I’m glad Hayes opted not to pursue that storyline since I think it would have detracted from the sweetness of Remy and Tony’s journey in A Way With Words.

Whereas Remy’s story was sweet, his brother’s story was more intense and driven. Reeve is a goal setter and a goal achiever. He’s a man with a plan, but he’s also a man who’s starting over in the big city since his last plan fell apart. Reeve’s willingness to step back, reassess his plan and current trajectory, and make changes as needed was refreshing. That he could be rather dramatic when making said changes made him that much more adorable – which seems odd to say when the course corrections were accompanied by some seriously steamy scenes. Oh yeah, Reeve and Leo’s interactions are aggressively intense, which made me glad I was listening at home and not at work. I do believe that Hayes may have funneled the unused angst from Remy’s story over to his brother’s because Reeve seemed to court extra drama in A Way With You. Fortunately, the author delivered the promised happy ending that was just right for this duo.

As for the narration, I was quite the happy camper. It wasn’t until I consulted my Audible library that I learned this is not the first time I’ve listened to Alexander Cendese’s narration… it’s the second time. But it won’t be the last because I absolutely enjoyed his performance. I loved how he brought Hayes’ characters to life, giving the Italian New Yorkers just enough accent to make it clear where they hailed from but not so much as to be overwhelming (which, as a quiet Southern girl in the midst of a large New York Italian family reunion, it can be very overwhelming). I especially adored how he captured Tony’s layers – his sweetness, his machismo, his confidence, his insecurity, his swagger, and his love of family. This was a great duet that left me with a smile on my face and a desire to check out Felice Stevens’ The Breakfast Club series as that’s the world these two stories were set in. I have to hand it to Lane Hayes, it’s not often that an author manages to revive my appreciation of a narrator I’ve neglected and send me off to check out another author’s books, all while making me fall in love with their own characters.

Lane Hayes is grateful to finally be doing what she loves best. Writing full-time! It’s no secret Lane loves a good romance novel. An avid reader from an early age, she has always been drawn to well-told love story with beautifully written characters. These days she prefers the leading roles to both be men. Lane discovered the M/M genre a few years ago and was instantly hooked. Her debut novel was a 2013 Rainbow Award finalist and subsequent books have received Honorable Mentions, and won first prize in the 2016 and 2017 Rainbow Awards. She loves red wine, chocolate and travel (in no particular order). Lane lives in Southern California with her amazing husband in a newly empty nest.
