Wonder by Erica Chilson

Dr. Bethany Essex is looking for a Christmas miracle.

After spending her youth reaching goals in her academic career, everything was falling into place. Bethany was finally in a place where she felt safe to build her family, looking forward to a home to share with Rory.

Years of infertility took its toll, both emotionally and financially.

All around Beth, life’s joys are being realized for her friends and family, but with the envy comes the guilt. Guilt over taxing her husband with endless tuition, office space, and fertility treatments, to the point they can’t afford the home Beth so badly wishes she could fill with children.

Devon, Essie, and Rory make sure Bethany never has to wonder what might have been, if only she’d open up by placing her trust in them.

Seeing the results of Beth and Rory’s struggle to have a family is heartbreaking, as what seeing what it did to Beth’s self-esteem made my heart hurt. But Beth and Rory have so many people around them who love them, and we get to see them all at the Christmas Eve celebration of the Blended families we know and love.

The sadness at the beginning of this novella makes way for Christmas crazy and lots of love. It was fantastic to see a glimpse into the future when everyone is a little older, in some cases seeing them with their own children. It has me eager to read more of the stories of these characters to see how they get to where are this Christmas. But for me, the most exciting moment of Wonder is the glimpse of Sage and Weston. I cannot wait for their story.

I loved every minute of Wonder. Just thinking about it brings happy tears to my eyes. I’ve already read it twice and I know I’ll re-read it again and again.

This novella is the ninth in the series. I was going to say that you really do need to have read all the previous books to enjoy this one... but actually, if you are new to the series, then this will seem like a moment in time in the lives of many characters, with the focus on Bethany, and her deepest desire to have a child. It will hopefully entice you to reading an amazing series.

It was such a treat to catch up with many of the Blended family, even if initially we get to experience the deep sadness of Beth at her inability to conceive with her husband, Rory. Her reflections on how they had assumed it would just happen, then spent all their savings on IVF, and now, giving Devon the chance to bring their family closer together. As faithful readers will know, Devon has faced his own demons, but as part of the polyamory relationship with his wife Essie, Rory, and Beth, he has a mission to blend their family forever.

A very thoughtful and evocative episode, by the end I felt that I had just been to the party and caught up with a group of old friends. Can't wait to see how the new living arrangements settle down.

Wonder is book nine in the Blended series. This series cannot be read as standalones and should be read in order as the author intended.

Beth has worked her butt off achieving what she's needed to to have the career she's always wanted while everyone around her has started their families. She's always thought she and Rory had time for buying a house and filling it with children but after months of trying and IVF treatments, she's left not pregnant and feeling guilty. Rory, Devon, and Essie will do everything in their power to make Beth's dreams come true, she just has to trust in them to achieve it.

Watching Beth, a woman who has been so sure of herself, crumple, rings true with so many women in this position. She felt like a failure. Rory, through it all, was her rock and unexpectedly, so was Devon,

I love that this was a holiday novella. The perfect quick read that gives you substance about the foursome but so much more with everyone gathered for the holiday. You get to see conversations of other couples. Weston and Sage were a huge hit for me. I can't wait for that story! Hell, I can't wait for anything more of the Blended world!

Isn't it amazing the pressure that we put on ourselves to conform, to be like others and then punish ourselves when it doesn't happen in the time frame we expect it?

That's exactly what's happened to Beth. She wants a family, a child of her own, something that would cement her place in the polyamorous family she has made with Devon, Essie, and Rory. She feels as though she is a failure in her own relationships while she's counseling others to be more secure in theirs.

What Beth doesn't realize is that she is the glue that holds the foursome together. They all love and respect her, and what she has accomplished in her career. It’s Beth's doubts that are causing the other three members of the quad to worry. They want to give her the child she desperately wants, and Devon believes he's the one to give it to her.

Christmas is a wonderful season and one can hope that Beth accepting her life as it is, will give her the strength to adapt to what her life could be if given a chance.

Erica Chilson does not write in the 3rd person, wanting her readers to be her characters. Therefore, writing a bio about herself, is uncomfortable in the extreme.

Born, raised, and here to stay, the Wicked Writer is a stump-jumper, a ridge-runner. Hailing from North Central Pennsylvania, directly on the New York State border; she loves the changes in seasons, the humid air, all the mountainous forest, and the gloomy atmosphere.

Introverted, but not socially awkward, Erica prides herself on thinking first and filtering her speech. There are days she doesn’t speak at all. If it wasn’t for the fact that she lives with her parents, giving her a sense of reality, she would be a hermit, where the delivery man finds her months after expiration.

Reading was an escape, a way to leave a not-so pleasant reality behind. Reading lent Erica the courage she gathered from the characters between the pages to long for a different life. Writing was an instrument of change, evolving Erica into the woman she is today- a better, more mature, more at peace thinker.

Erica has a wicked mind, one she pours out into her creations. Her filter doesn’t allow all of it to erupt, much to her relief. Sarcastic, with a very dark, perverse sense of humor, Erica puts a bit of herself into every character she writes.
