Wicked by Erica Chilson

The origin of the Blended series…

You’ve heard the rumors about the Kline family, but are they true?

Am I the drug addict my son claims me to be?

Am I the wicked girl who sold her soul alongside her body?

Did I shack up with John Mason because I refused to take care of myself?

Is Pastor Kline an unholy man who seeded his congregation with by-blows?

Is my husband the hero of the tale as his son claims him to be?

Is Tina just a carbon-copy of her wicked mother?

Is the upstanding know-it-all, hardworking, advice-giving Auggie everything he claims himself to be?

Let’s go back to where it all started and find out the truth once and for all. From 1982 to the present, follow along the journey with Lisa Kline, as the child victim turns into an empowered survivor, acting with dignity as the ones who should always defend her let her down time and time again.

*Warning: darker aspects of the human condition are explored within Wicked.

Everything we thought we knew about Lisa Kline is blown out of the water. Auggie's skill at manipulation and lies started at a very young age. His ability to twist facts to suit him and Lisa's refusal to play his games led everyone to believe what he said because she refused to engage in that battle of wills.

Lisa's story is one that I didn't see coming. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the truth in the stories that Auggie has been spreading, and for the repercussions.

Just when I thought life couldn't get any more insane for the Kline family, Erica Chilson upped the ante and proved me wrong.

I'm going to be completely honest here... I wasn't looking forward to this story. I wasn't really interested in Lisa Kline's story, and had no interest in hearing her side of things. The truth of the matter is, there are always three sides to every story: Yours, Mine, and the Truth. We've heard all about Auggie's childhood (from him): his mother, his lack of father, his adopted family... What we don't know is Lisa's side of that story and Wicked is going to set the record straight!

OH MY GOODNESS! This story was absolutely PHENOMENAL, it totally blew my mind. Seriously. Amazing.

As I mentioned previously, Lisa Kline is the main character of this story and it's based on her teen - adult years. I thought I knew what was going on, I mean I've read the previous seven books... right?!? Nope, so wrong.

I fell in love with this story right off the bat, once Lisa meets Meredith (the Feminist) and we read her Speech (I highlighted the entire passage, it really hits the nail on the head). This is just the beginning!! Every single character is important. Every single detail is important. Every single moment leads to the strength and quiet dignity of Lisa.

The questions are: Who is Lisa Kline? Who is Patrick Kline? What happened to Augustus to make him act the way he does?

These are answered, and most importantly, the TRUTH is finally surfaced.

I am not willing to give anything away, spoil the story, but I will say this is a MUST READ. (It also took me a week to fully digest this story, and I'm going in for a re-read.)

This is the eighth book in the series – and it blows a lot of preconceptions and beliefs out of the water. Hold your breath as some underlying truths are revealed and we start to get a completely different picture to the one that had been painted for us. I love when Erica Chilson throws a totally new angle on a story, and makes the reader realise how they were manipulated into a point of view... and then everything that character has told us becomes subject to doubt and... and…

This is an absolute must read, and I would imagine re-read for most of us, as it almost needs a second time to really make it stick; I loved it so much that it was no hardship! As we get Lisa's story, one we possibly never imagined we needed, we definitely learn more about Auggie and his skills at bending the truth to suit his needs and wants, and at Lisa's strength of character. I loved the crazy a lot!

Just trust that you need to read this installment and learn so much, and expect to be drawn deep into the story and come out with a bit of a hangover – the very best kind.

Wicked takes us back to 1982 where we meet Lisa Kline as a teenager and takes us up to the present day. From what we know of Lisa Kline, I wasn’t particularly interested in her story or reading anything that takes us back to 1982. But from the very first scene I was hooked.

The story starts with Lisa, this intelligent, strong teenager, a pastor’s daughter, living in a conservative town in 1982, where the best a girl can hope for is to get married and have babies, arguing with her sexist male maths teacher. The unjust of Lisa’s situation was all it took. I was completely hooked and the feminist in me was all riled up.

I was fascinated with Lisa’s journey. Seeing her meet Auggie’s father, go through pregnancy and life as a mother with some very complicated issues making her life very difficult, and still she is so strong and selfless. But she is still human and makes mistakes, which in my mind made her that much more wonderful.

I was so wrapped up in Lisa’s story I almost forgot that she’d met the Mason family and when she did, my excitement level went through the roof. I loved seeing a young Malcom and seeing Auggie, Isis, and Robin as kids.

As the story draws to a close in the present day, I didn’t want it to end and I can’t wait for Auggie, Isis, and Robin’s story to see what happens next. Wicked is another brilliant instalment of the Blended series. We’ve had eight books so far and I’m loving this series more and more. Bring on Wayward.

Wicked is the eighth installment in the Blended series. This one goes back to 1982 and comes to the present. And just when you think you know where an Erica Chilson story is going or think you feel one way, she writes a story that has you questioning everything you thought you knew.

I never gave much thought to Lisa's story. It was… whatever. I wasn't as interested in finding out what happened in her past that made her like she was. I was more interested in finding out why Auggie is like he is, but the first scene in the first chapter drew me in and I couldn't put it down. Seeing things from Auggie's point of view clouded my judgement in ways I didn't see until now. I was fascinated by Lisa and her story. I know I am going to have to do a re-read to pick up the bits and pieces I missed because I was in such a hurry to get to the present to see how it all played out and the truth revealed.

If you have read the previous books, then Wicked is a MUST read. It is a game changer. I had a serious hangover (which is not normal for me). Ms. Chilson has weaved a fantastic web. I can't wait for more from this series.

Erica Chilson does not write in the 3rd person, wanting her readers to be her characters. Therefore, writing a bio about herself, is uncomfortable in the extreme.

Born, raised, and here to stay, the Wicked Writer is a stump-jumper, a ridge-runner. Hailing from North Central Pennsylvania, directly on the New York State border; she loves the changes in seasons, the humid air, all the mountainous forest, and the gloomy atmosphere.

Introverted, but not socially awkward, Erica prides herself on thinking first and filtering her speech. There are days she doesn’t speak at all. If it wasn’t for the fact that she lives with her parents, giving her a sense of reality, she would be a hermit, where the delivery man finds her months after expiration.

Reading was an escape, a way to leave a not-so pleasant reality behind. Reading lent Erica the courage she gathered from the characters between the pages to long for a different life. Writing was an instrument of change, evolving Erica into the woman she is today- a better, more mature, more at peace thinker.

Erica has a wicked mind, one she pours out into her creations. Her filter doesn’t allow all of it to erupt, much to her relief. Sarcastic, with a very dark, perverse sense of humor, Erica puts a bit of herself into every character she writes.
