This is the fifth and, very sadly, the final book in this series. It has been an amazing collection of stories which have over the last three years given us some absolutely beautiful, but heart-rending stories. Rest assured you will need a tissue for this one too! I really suggest that you read these books in order, as there is much that you will miss out on if you don't. I am writing this review assuming you do know what has happened in previous books.

We know about Crooked Tree Ranch and its inhabitants, so to find that Rob, Justin's one-time colleague, is making his way back there is definitely a worry. We also don't understand what is driving him – but once we do... wow! R.J. Scott skillfully ensures that we are utterly invested in his, his nephews', and Aaron's futures, so that when the situation is revealed, tissues are definitely needed. Actually, the subtle way in which our sympathies travel between characters is quite incredible, from the lady in the petrol station stop, to Grace, to the boys, to Rob...

I don't want to say more, as you really need to grab a copy and enjoy every page. I have definitely made sure that this series is on my to-be-reread list, as I am looking forward to a marathon read of them all in one go. That said, the previous stories have always stayed with me, so that I really haven't ever felt the need to go back. Thank you for a wonderful collection of love stories.

This is the story of two ex-service men who fall for each other in small town Montana. Both Rob and Aaron are a little bit older and while Aaron is ready to settle down, Rob can’t see any future for himself.

This isn’t the sexiest or most romantic of RJ Scott’s books. Between Rob’s nephews, his PTSD, his chronic pain, and his near-suicidal mental state, he doesn’t have much capacity for sex let alone romance. Aaron, in contrast, is a romantic and he is keen to settle down. For most of the book, I felt like Aaron was short changed and almost taken advantage of. Furtive, secretive hook-ups can be sexy, but Rob is too dead inside to offer anything but ice-cold sexual transactions that seem unfair to Aaron. It is only when Rob is pushed that he starts to grow up and connect to his emotions and his responsibilities. Much of the story is about Rob’s personal growth and there are some raw emotional scenes.

Things warm between Aaron and Rob but we don’t ever see a whole lot of passion between them. Fans of the series will enjoy catching up with earlier couples, but I’ve dipped in and out of this series and I probably should have read all the previous books to properly enjoy this one. I love the sense of place in these books and the sense of family – both families of choice and of blood are lovely in this story.
