Diamond Fire by Ilona Andrews

Nevada Frida Baylor and Connor Ander Rogan cordially invite you to join their wedding celebration. Summoning, weather manipulation, and other magical activities strictly forbidden.

Catalina Baylor is looking forward to wearing her maid of honor dress and watching her older sister walk down the aisle. Then the wedding planner gets escorted off the premises, the bride’s priceless tiara disappears, and Rogan's extensive family overruns his mother’s home. Someone is cheating, someone is lying, and someone is plotting murder.

To make this wedding happen, Catalina will have to do the thing she fears most: use her magic. But she’s a Baylor and there’s nothing she wouldn't do for her sister's happiness. Nevada will have her fairy tale wedding, even if Catalina has to tear the mansion apart brick by brick to get it done.

I WANT MORE!!! I sure wish Ilona Andrews would write faster! I've missed these characters and this world so much this year. Diamond Fire is a great short story dealing with Nevada and "Mad Dog" Connor's wedding. Connor's family is in town for the wedding and they aren't happy about the union. Sabotage and theft abound and Catalina, who has taken over wedding planning duties, has to find out what is happening. More her story than Nevada's, Catalina is coming into her own and trying to use her own Siren powers without losing control. The story was quick moving and full of dramatic characters fighting the couple's nuptials and themselves for positioning in the hierarchy. I was lost (in all the good ways) in their world and couldn't put the story down, the same with all the other books so far in this series! Fantastic short story!

I read the first three books in Ilona Andrews’ Hidden Legacy series and I was completely enthralled with the world of Primes and magic users. I had no trouble devouring every word of Diamond Fire and getting completely swept back into all the House drama that a House Rogan wedding had to offer. I am usually not a reader that will re-read a series, but the Hidden Legacy series is exactly the kind of Houston I wouldn’t mind revisiting. Plus, the more I learned about Nevada Baylor and her sisters, the more I wanted to know. I am so excited to finally learn more about Nevada’s sister, Catalina, and this novella was the perfect teaser of the next three books I’ll have to somehow find the patience to wait for.

Connor Rogan and Nevada Baylor are finally getting married and Catalina plans to ensure that her sister gets the perfect wedding. So, with all of Connor’s family coming out to celebrate the big day there are obviously bound to be some issues, but when Mrs. Rogan’s family tiara is suddenly missing, it’s up to Catalina to find the culprit.

I found that I am equally as intrigued with reading about Rogan and Nevada as I am to learning more about Catalina and any future suitors she may have. I am not gonna lie, I was a little disappointed this novella didn’t contain more Rogan and Nevada scenes, but I think it provides a perfect bridge between Nevada’s story and Catalina’s story. Plus, it definitely had me amped up to read these next three books and I, for one, can’t wait to see what Catalina’s story may hold!

5 stars for Ilona Andrews’ Diamond Fire

I don’t think I’ve ever been so glad for a spinoff! I loved the Hidden Fire books and Catalina’s story brings readers a satisfying conclusion to the series – while also introducing us to an exciting new heroine and a world of possibilities for the characters we’ve come to know and love.

Nevada’s family has always been one of the highlights of the Hidden Fire books and I’ve loved her powerful sisters from the start. This book belongs to Catalina. Readers get to see Catalina grow from teenager to woman – and we get to see her finally take control of her powers. While Catalina is young enough for her book to be Young Adult or New Adult, her experiences and her powers make her feel very adult. This doesn’t read like YA fiction.

Nevada and Rogan’s wedding provides the backdrop for this book and while I’ve enjoyed Nevada’s quirky family since the start, this is the first time we get to know Rogan’s family. Catalina investigates the whole family while looking for a stolen tiara and it is way too much fun to hate them all. Wealthy, powerful, and political, Rogan’s family brings full on Machiavellian drama to the book.

I love the way Catalina grows into her powers in this story. Previously, we’ve always seen her frightened by her power and she’s only ever used it when forced to. Here, Catalina learns to harness her powers – and she learns to enjoy using her power. Catalina is quickly becoming a powerful being in her own right and I’m really looking forward to more books with her at the centre. This definitely isn’t a standalone book. New readers will need to go back to the start of the series and I hope they enjoy the books as much as I have.

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored two New York Times and USA Today bestselling series—the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and the romantic urban fantasy of The Edge—and are working on the next volumes for both. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.
