Cam Boy by Quinn Anderson

Their chemistry is undeniable, but he knows better than to mix business with pleasure.

After years of making minimum wage, twenty-one-year-old Josh Clemmons may have found his salvation. Murmur Inc., a local adult entertainment company, is hosting auditions for new performers, and Josh has been invited to try out. If he can make it as a porn star, he can kiss his money troubles goodbye.

Mike Harwood is a loud-and-proud professional adult entertainer. In the past three years, he’s starred in dozens of films, and he’s very good at what he does. But as focused as he’s been on work, he’s neglected everything else, including his love life. He’s so used to faking attraction, he can no longer tell when something real is staring him in the face.

Josh gets the job, but when porn fails to live up to the fantasy, he quits to do cam work instead. But he can’t stop thinking about the one scene he filmed, and the captivating man he filmed it with. Their chemistry is undeniable, but Mike knows better than to mix business with pleasure. Then again, with true love on the line, this unorthodox office romance may need a second take.

Erica☆☆☆☆
4 Guilty Pleasure stars.

Cam Boy is the third installment of the Murmur Inc. series, and can easily be read as a standalone. The only tie to each book is the Murmur Inc. setting, featuring Collette, the producer.

What I enjoy the most about this series is the levity – it doesn't take itself too seriously, offering many laughs and steamy scenes, yet the characters pack an emotional punch. I'm a sucker for the gut-punch sensation of rejection, and Cam Boy did this to me a few times over.

Josh is broke, and obsessed with the porn industry after he learned an ex-coworker of his joined Murmur Inc. He's always checking their website for an audition and is floored when he gets a callback.

Josh isn't prepared when he meets Mike, one of Murmur Inc.'s top seasoned actors. Awkward hilarity, with a mix of rejection ensues, strumming my emotions across the board.

What I appreciated the most is how a series set in the sex industry doesn't glamorize nor vilify it. In fact, this installment more so than the others, shows both the pros and cons of the industry with accuracy yet compassion.

It's obvious that Josh and Mike have amazing chemistry, their opposing personalities feeding into one another. To me, this read as the beginning of what will blossom.

My only complaint was the tedious inner monologue that took away from the story itself. Both Josh and Mike would mull over their redundant thoughts for pages on end, causing me to become bored, to the point I found myself skimming to the nearest action/dialogue. This is when their voices melded until they were almost indistinguishable from each other. While in action and dialogue, they were very much separate characters.

I love the setting and the premise, and I can't wait to see what else the author has in store for this series.

My second story in the Murmur Inc. series and I think I liked Hotline better. Still a bit too much attention to mundane detail, such as keys making plop sounds and navigating spiral staircases and wireless mice. These over-descriptors turn me off the story a bit, which is sad because the story wasn't bad! I hate when I have to skim!

Josh was a little flaky, a little wish washy, but Mike Harwood is a good solid character. Taking young Josh under his wing (not completely magnanimously... he is pretty to look at, after all). Mike tries to show Josh the ropes in the porn trade. Josh comes off smug at first but finds porn isn't the cake job he thought it would be. But Mike, he's the whipped topping Josh is hoping to lick off his fingers. Not being able to separate real feelings from porn reactions, Josh is genuine when Mike isn't even sure what that is anymore. Mike realizing he's a bit jaded and Josh realizing porn is hard work, the two seem too different to hit it off but have really good chemistry. I really like these guys together, Mike is a bit bossy and Josh (well, and me too) likes that… a lot. Add in a bit of an STI scare, the two make hard life decisions and hope they end up together when the dust settles. Great epilogue and perfect ending, so I did enjoy the read!

This is a fun story of the relationship between a veteran porn star and a cocky but thoroughly unprepared wannabe. There isn’t a huge age gap between Josh and Mike, but Mike’s experiences make him seem much older.

There are some brilliant moments in this story, but it lacks some of the humour I’ve enjoyed in the first two books. With an HIV scare and Mike questioning his future at Murmur Inc., there are a few more serious threads in this story. The characters and their experiences feel more realistic in this book and while I loved the ridiculous moments in the first two stories, I feel like I was able to connect to Josh and Mike as characters more easily in this one.

As always, this book is sex positive and non-judgmental. I liked Josh’s friends and roommates, but we don’t see too much of them. This is a fun and slightly angsty read. I love Quinn Anderson’s writing and this series continues to make me smile.
