This modern day telling of Beauty and the Beast is hot, steamy and kind of cute. It worked as a fun short read, that had a predictable plot but with a couple of twists. It is well described by the author in the 'blurb' as insta-love, and tons of sex. I would definitely read more by Ms. Riley.

Owning the Beast is a quick read that could be considered a modern erotic take on Beauty and the Beast. Alexa has recently lost her parents and because they sheltered her for so much of her life to keep her hidden from her father’s enemies, she is an extremely naïve virgin. She knows that she must get out of Mexico as soon as possible and because her mother was an American citizen, her only barrier to leaving is financial. Alexa finds her ticket to freedom in the form of a mail-order bride service that also happens to run an escort service. While understandably nervous about marrying a complete stranger, Alexa is relieved for the security and stability that the marriage offers her. When she arrives at her new home, she is taken aback by her fiancé Griffin – not because of his extensive scarring, but rather it is the way he treats her that she finds disconcerting.

I really enjoyed reading Owning the Beast. The twist that Ms. Riley gives Beauty and the Beast lends itself to the intense erotic scenes that occur between Alexa and Griffin. Despite his rough treatment of her, Alexa does not hold it against Griffin but rather sees it as the defense mechanism that it is. Neither realize during their first day together that they have been hoodwinked, so she spends the time “falling in love” with her fiancé while he spends the time baffled by a whore that doesn’t flee immediately after sex. The “training” that Alexa received from the escorts at the agency helps to increase the eroticism of the story despite her virginal status. As with all novellas, I allow quite a bit of leeway with how quickly Alexa and Griffin fall in love because while it does occur within 24-48 hours of meeting, her openness to love her husband-to-be and his need to be loved make the speed with which it occurs acceptable – not to mention, the author does forewarn potential readers that it’s gonna happen quickly.

As much as I enjoyed Owning the Beast I could not bring myself to give it a 4-star rating because of the constant shifting in tenses. Although I did receive a free copy of the book and do not know whether it is the final version or not, the frequency with which the author shifts from present tense to past tense – sometimes within the same sentence – is too often to chalk it up to it being an editing issue. While definitely noticeable, it is not enough to ruin the read but enough to prevent it from receiving 4 stars from me. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Riley’s work.
