Rock Chick Renegade by Kristen Ashley

Juliet Lawler has got a score to settle against the drug dealers of Denver. Vance Crowe has made it his mission that Jules won’t get dead while dishing out vigilante justice. Jules doesn’t have time for romance; she’s too busy saving the world. She enlists Zip (the gunstore owner), Heavy (an ex-PI) and Frank (a mysterious recluse) to help. The Rock Chicks get involved to provide advice and guidance. The Hot Bunch adopt Jules as one of their own. Even though Jules tries to hang on to her inner Head-Crackin’ Mamma Jamma, the Rock Chicks, Hot Bunch, Jules’s long-suffering Uncle Nick and Jules’s friend, the rotund, African American, Jackie-O wannabe, May, will stop at nothing to wear her down. But Jules makes some bad guys pretty angry, and one will stop at nothing to take her out.

These stories just get better and better. I laughed (a lot), I shed a few tears, and I turned and turned pages, ignoring all responsibilities, because knowing how this one panned out was far more important than everything else. Let's be clear this involves Vance, I mean... Vance... yes, all the Nightingale men are gorgeous and even enigmatic, but Vance, well he is just delicious. I loved his story, and how the Rock Chicks take care of Jules. And what a great addition to the gang she is. I loved the storyline, from the vigilantism to the wonderful love affair, to catching up with all things Indie, Ally, et al.

Now I am going to read Rock Chick Revenge – because after all sleep is over-rated – and given the ending of this book, I need to know what happens next.

Jules is the kind of woman every girl wants to be and the kind of woman that every guy wants to be with. She is tough, intelligent, loving, and gorgeous. She works as a social worker by day, looking after runaways and at night, she harasses and is a thorn in the side of local drug dealers.

Vance is strong, quiet, and the personification of hot. He is well known for being a player, so when he takes an interest in Jules, everyone warns her about his reputation, something she was already aware of.

With Vance comes the hot guy bunch and the rock chicks and they all bring Jules into the fold. With Jules comes a bunch of new characters, including a crazy gun store owner and numerous runaways.

Rock Chick Renegade gives us another fun and crazy romance with some danger and head cracking thrown in. I loved it. I can't get enough of the rock chicks.

It is quite likely that Rock Chick Renegade is my second favorite of the Rock Chick series. I’m really hard pressed to name my second favorite, but the truth of the matter is that I’ve always found Native American men attractive, so the combination of Vance Crowe and Jules, the head-crackin’ mamma jamma, gives this installment in the series an edge over the others (sorry Lee and Indy). Of course, that assessment doesn’t even take into consideration the massive shake up of the major players in Denver’s underbelly that takes place and leads to a reunion I’ve been too hesitant to even hope would ever come to fruition in the series, much less at the mid-way point. Yes, I remember the absolute shock I felt when I first read that scene. and I still find it to be an extremely emotional scene, even if I have read it half a dozen times (at least). Let us not forget that Jules kicks bad guy butt as well as the Nightingale men, and can take down a snarky skank (or four) and a mouthy witch (trying to keep it clean) as well. The scene in Smithie’s is quite possibly one of my favorites in the series that takes place there – and that includes everything that poor Jet had to deal with during Rock Chick Rescue.

But more than all that, it is the relationship that develops between Vance and Jules. Their moments in bed are more than just sexy, they contain an added level of intimacy because of Jules’s inexperience and what that means to Vance. Ashley creates such a strong character in Vance that his moment of vulnerability – when he tells Jules just what it means to him that she’s never been touched by another – is absolutely heartbreaking, yet thrilling as he lays his claim to her. And in his doing so, Vance opens Jules up to forming new friendships and strengthening the ones she already had. I don’t see Jules’s transformation as character development, but rather a blossoming. It’s obvious by her chosen profession and the investment she has in the kids she works with that she is a kind and generous woman full of love, but her walls have kept people out. So to see her dismantle her walls, taking a chance on Vance, getting closer to May, and letting the Rock Chicks in, makes Rock Chick Renegade that much more enjoyable.

Even though I’ve read this installment half a dozen times (at least), I still cry at the heartfelt and sad moments. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – this is what I love about Kristen Ashley’s books. I cry when Jules gets her birthday present from Nick. I cry when Daisy learns that Jules knows who her husband is. I cry when Lee kisses Jules’s forehead. I cry when tragedy strikes. I cry when families are reunited. And I tear up at several other scenes and still laugh my butt off at the funny parts. The emotional response they pull from me is just as fresh as it was the first time I read the book. My only complaint is that I’m dying to dive right in to Rock Chick Revenge because I’m ready to experience Ava and Luke’s wild ride again and I don’t know if I can or if I have to wait a week.

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
