Hawke by Sawyer Bennett

The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team proves that love is a power play. As Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling series continues, the league’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Hawke Therrien has been playing hockey his whole life, it's what he knows and loves. After The One (or so he thought) broke his heart years ago, he has not even tried to make a relationship work. Why even try when you could party and just have fun? He didn't want to go through that kind of heartbreak again. So he plays hockey and parties, that is the life he leads.

Vale Campbell was the carefree party girl until all those years ago, something happened and she pushed Hawke away. Thinking it was best for them both. She hasn't gotten over him, although she has tried to move on with her life, but no man can ever come close to The One.

So when both Hawke and Vale end up at Cold Fury, him as a player and her on the coaching staff, it might be the beginning of the end for them both. Can they work together and finally talk about what happened in the past? Will Hawke get past the anger to forgive her? Can Vale let her feelings for him show without losing herself again?

I did find that the anger Hawke held on to was justified and if Vale would have told him everything when they talked, it might have helped things move along quicker. Although she acted as if she wanted to tell him, she called and emailed him, but she didn't was hard for me to understand. Just ask him why the hell he didn't answer her back. It was her biggest question, so why wouldn't she ask? To me it was causing herself more pain because she didn't ask.

I love everything about this series, I mean who wouldn't, hot hockey players. Yeah, I thought so. I find something I like better about each story and this one is the second chance romance and it has the pain and heartbreak and all the feels that drew me in and kept me reading because I had to know what happened next. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book, bring on Max.

This is such an enjoyable series and I love that you can read any one of them without needing the previous books for it to be awesome. Hawke is incredible, I devoured this book without putting it down, it sucks you right in!

Vale is breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, Hawke, and the reason why remains a mystery through most of the book. Now, years later, Vale has moved home to be with her sick father and she’s gotten a job as an athletic trainer for the hockey team that Hawke plays for. Hawke has always loved Vale and doesn’t understand why she left him, and since her return, he wants answers. Even though Vale has a boyfriend, Hawke knows they’re destined to be together and he’ll do anything to win her back.

I really enjoyed this second chance romance, I also love that you get a bit of the other hockey players and not just Hawke and Vale. I loved the chemistry between Hawke and Vale and that their love wins out over everything else. The thing I didn’t love about this story? Vale. She’s selfish and immature and I really think Hawke deserved better. Vale’s a very frustrating character, but the story itself is great and I look forward to reading the next in this Cold Fury Hockey story!

This is the fifth book in the series, and I would highly recommend that you read them in order. That said, they have all been excellent in their own right.

Hawke is a man who had his heart broken by his childhood sweetheart when he left for a professional hockey career, and never really recovered. He has never committed since, and when she appears in his new team as member of the coaching staff, he is confused by the changes he sees in her. Seven years is a long time, but clearly there is still something there. Watching these two people navigate the stormy waters of their past and present is both entertaining and moving. There is a lovely rapport between them, and some very poignant moments have to be overcome for there to be a chance at a better future.

Hawke really does come over a lovely guy, and when he is hit not once, but twice with revelations about their past, he proves it again and again. His responses are so in tune with someone who has known their 'one' from a very young age and grown up understanding how they function. Even with all that happened, they both had that knowledge at their hearts. For me, that was the beauty of the story.

Thank you Ms. Bennett for another lovely installment from this team of hockey players.
