Feat of Clay by Susan Mac Nicol

Imprisoned and tortured, undercover cop Tate Williams will find redemption in the arms of his boyhood friend, now lover, former SAS soldier Clay Mortimer.

TWO MEN.
TORN. TORTURED. LOVED.

Though they went their separate ways, Tate Williams and Clay Mortimer have been crazy about each other since their school days. Clay went into the SAS. Tate became a cop. Neither mentioned their attraction to the other. Both sought out danger. Both found it.

Imprisoned and shot in an undercover assignment gone wrong, Tate somehow survived…and found his way back into Clay’s arms. His old friend is now the owner of an elite investigation agency and everything any man could want: patient, handsome, commanding. And Clay knows what it takes to survive. But Tate can’t bring himself to share all his secrets, nightmares that force him to rebel against everything. He finds solace from his past as a graffiti artist, a childhood passion, but his demons drive away all who might care for him. Only when he faces that past—and learns that everyone has tasted despair—can the two men truly be brothers-in-arms…and more.

This is the fourth in an excellent series – and although it could be read as a standalone, I would recommend that you read them in order, just because they are so good – and there are characters who feature throughout. In a way, this seems the darkest, but actually all the books tackle difficult issues, although all different.

This pairing is particularly interesting as they have a long shared past, so their behaviour towards each other is steeped in an underlying care and understanding which is often missing in a relationship. They are absolutely there for each other, even if dealing with issues beyond their control. There are some very sad moments, but also some which make you chuckle. They are definitely hot for each other and heat up the pages for our enjoyment. I really like how the gang get together every now and again and reveal little snippets to the reader.

Thank you again Ms. Mac Nicol for a very good book!

This is a good addition to the Men of London Series.
This story follows Clay and Tate, after years of pretending that they were just friends they finally go together after Tate was almost killed in a undercover sting gone wrong.
Through the book we see Clay trying to help Tate through the drama he experienced. Tate has PTSD so his moods are always up and down. He is just trying to find a happiness that he feels that only Clay can give him.
They make a great couple and work well together throughout the book and have pretty hot sex.
I really liked their interaction with the kids, especially Jax.
This book was a little slower than the rest of the series but I still really enjoyed it.
Waiting patiently for the next book.

I love that this series intersects the lives of these couples. You fall in love with them and even though you don't get full information you still get little snippets of their lives in the next book.

Feat of Clay follows the slow love story of Clay and Tate. They were childhood friends, each had an attraction to the other once they figured out they were gay, but never talked about it. Neither guy wanted to jeopardize the friendship, it meant too much.

Tate, an undercover cop, was held captive, was abused, shot and left for dead. In that moment, Clay knew he couldn't live without him, he had to express his true feelings. Tate's had a hard recovery. His PTSD has left the relationship on shaky ground, can Clay let go of the tight hold he has on Tate? Can Tate finally reveal the secrets holding his recovery back?

Tate's secret reveal and the section involving Lily was such a roller coaster of emotion. It was written perfectly to pull those feelings from the reader, well, this reader. Well done!

I am thoroughly enjoying this series. Each couple is different and unique. They each have their own issues to overcome to make it work. I can't wait to see what's next!

Feat of Clay was a heavier read than I expected. Granted, I didn’t reread the blurb before I started the book, but even if I had I still wouldn’t have expected the novel to take a few of the turns that it did. But as I often enjoy the unexpected, especially from an author I’ve read before, this was a bonus for me because I love a good romantic suspense plot and Nicol gave me a great one with this installment in the Men of London series.

The book begins with Clay being woken by his partner’s nightmare, which the author gave me just enough of a peek into to let my imagination run wild. Over the course of the novel, we learn more about the torture that Tate endured and we learn the secrets he’s kept from everyone (which were far worse than my imagination expected) and how these two things have combined to haunt him in his nightmares. Fortunately for Tate, Clay understands nightmares and tries to help Tate deal with them. But because of THE SECRET, Tate won’t let him because he’s afraid that he’ll lose Clay if the truth is revealed. Clay’s refusal to expose their relationship out of fear for Tate’s safety only exacerbates an already tenuous situation, driving more of a wedge between them. When Tate attempts to find peace through his graffiti art, an unexpected event sends him back to Clay – the man who has always been there for him. While this incident serves as another setback for Tate, he finally lets Clay in and tells him about what happened to him (at least most of it). And Clay gives him exactly what he needed…his love. As they move forward, Clay’s biggest fear is realized when his work endangers Tate. Luckily for all involved, Tate isn’t a civilian and has the training as a cop that enables Clay to do his job.

I really enjoyed Clay and Tate’s relationship. Not only were the two men sexy as sin between the sheets, they also had a connection forged by years of friendship that served as a solid foundation for them to build on. That bond enabled them to communicate without having to talk at times, but in the same vein, it could be an obstacle to honest communication when either man allowed his fear of loss of the other to enter his mind. I loved the car chase at the end, not only because it was an adrenaline-filled page-turner, but also because it made Clay realize that keeping their relationship a secret was a moot point and gave him the push he needed to make their relationship known. I really liked the time that Tate spent at Castaways because it helped both him and the residents. I so hope that Jaz will eventually get his own book because I was quite intrigued by his character and would love to see him get his happily ever after. The emotional confessions, tragic events, intrigue, sexy man-on-man action, and love made Feat of Clay an awesome read that I devoured in one sitting. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Cross to Bare, really soon.

Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, self confessed geek and nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…

She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason. She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.

Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.

In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever – Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.
