A Ring & A Vow by Devon Rhodes

Every promise must someday be fulfilled, and the best way Owen knows how to reward Cary’s faith is with a vow.

It’s been nearly five years since Owen went down on one knee with his Academy ring and promised Cary he’d someday do it for real. With Cary being a Naval aviator and Owen a Marine officer serving in Iraq, they’re rarely on the same continent, let alone together.

About time for them to fill out paperwork to re-up, Owen realizes that if they were married, they’d have a much better chance of being stationed nearby. But time is not on their side, so he’s forced to compromise on his proposal in order to make it work.

Cary has been waiting for Owen for years—there was no chance he’d ever say anything but yes. Owen is coming home at last, and wants to make a home with him. However, between the chronic nightmares he’s been fighting and the ever more complicated wedding plans, the next month could be anything but a dream.

Reader Advisory: This book is the sequel to A Ring and A Promise by Devon Rhodes.

This follows on from A Ring and a Promise – and five years on we see that the men are still together, although rarely in each other's company. Owen has a plan though and surprises Cary in the very best of ways. This is such a fun read, with the mix of really sweet romantic moments and the harshness of the reality of being in the armed forces.

It was a very enjoyable, if short read. I can see myself reading the two again sometime as a 'cheer-me-up' tonic.

A Ring and A Promise

Careers in military service are never easy on relationships—even less so when both lovers are in different branches…and both are men.

Naval Academy graduation now under their belts, Cary Barrientos knows the reality of the upcoming separation from his roommate of the past four years. Owen is more to him than just his best friend—he is the one person Cary can see spending his life with.

Owen Marsh knew that when he became Cary's lover, the day would come when he would have to walk away. Now that day has come, and he's having a hard time convincing himself that it's just sex between them. Even with DADT repealed, there is no way a Marine and a Navy flier can be together. He's just being realistic not expecting more.

When Cary switches their Academy rings, hoping Owen won't notice, he makes a vow—he will do whatever he has to do, including believing enough for the both of them, to make their unlikely relationship stand the test of time. But when his Marine is called up for duty overseas, can a piece of jewellery and a promise be enough to get them through?

This short story is delicious. Two men who are destined to be military men, but also clearly destined to be together. Sadly, now they have been commissioned their service will keep them stationed apart. The story delves into a difficult issue for any couple, especially for a same sex couple. For all that it is short, a lot of development in the story takes place. The chemistry is clearly there, so I can't wait to see what happens next.

Devon started reading and writing at an early age and never looked back. At 39 and holding, Devon finally figured out the best way to channel her midlife crisis was to morph from mild-mannered stay-at-home mom to erotic romance writer. She lives in Oregon with her family, who are (mostly) understanding of all the time she spends on her laptop, aka the black hole.
