The Last Girl by Joe Hart

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Joe Hart.

A mysterious worldwide epidemic reduces the birthrate of female infants from 50 percent to less than 1 percent. Medical science and governments around the world scramble in an effort to solve the problem, but twenty-five years later there is no cure, and an entire generation grows up with a population of fewer than a thousand women.

Zoey and some of the surviving young women are housed in a scientific research compound dedicated to determining the cause. For two decades, she’s been isolated from her family, treated as a test subject, and locked away—told only that the virus has wiped out the rest of the world’s population.

Captivity is the only life Zoey has ever known, and escaping her heavily armed captors is no easy task, but she’s determined to leave before she is subjected to the next round of tests…a program that no other woman has ever returned from. Even if she’s successful, Zoey has no idea what she’ll encounter in the strange new world beyond the facility’s walls. Winning her freedom will take brutality she never imagined she possessed, as well as all her strength and cunning—but Zoey is ready for war.

I loved this book! I can't wait to read the next one. I like dystopian type books, but they can often be too bizarre. This one wasn't and I couldn't put it down.

I refuse to post too many details and spoil or confuse the storyline for others, but I will give a little info. We begin by joining the main character, Zoey. She is one of the last females on Earth, as less and less girls were being born, until the last two or so decades when only boys have been born.

Zoey has grown up in a scientific facility for the last girls to be studied in frantic efforts to fix the problems with the human race. As she ages, she begins to notice that some things just don't seem right. She begins defying the rules, and that leads to her opening up a whole new world for herself and a whole lot of trouble.

I am quite picky about which dystopian books I like, but this one instantly hooked me. The characters are all intriguing and as you read, you keep trying to figure them out with a nagging feeling that there has to be more. The beginning of the book was a bit on the slow side, but then it became packed with action and mystery which kept me turning the pages.

I can't wait for the next book and definitely recommend this one!
