Johnnie by Cardeno C. Blog Tour

A Premier lion shifter, Hugh Landry dedicates his life to leading the Berk pride with strength and confidence. Hundreds of people depend on Hugh for safety, success, and happiness. And at over a century old, with more power than can be contained in one body, Hugh relies on a Siphon lion shifter to carry his excess force.

When the Siphon endangers himself and therefore the pride, Hugh must pay attention to the man who has been his silent shadow for a decade. What he learns surprises him, but what he feels astounds him even more.

Two lions, each born to serve, rely on one another to survive. After years by each other’s side, they’ll finally realize the depth of their potential, the joy in their passion, and a connection their kind has never known.

Fantasy was the word Johnnie would have used. “No. Not a problem,” he said, his heart racing and lungs working overtime.

“The hot water and steam aren’t a good idea if you’re light-headed.” Hugh’s forehead crinkled and he tightened his grip on Johnnie. “Maybe we should skip the shower.”

“I’m not light-headed,” Johnnie assured him, desperately wanting to step under the spray with Hugh.

“Are you sure? Because you sound like you’re having trouble breathing and your face looks pale.”

Torn between embarrassing himself by explaining his body’s reaction or destroying the opportunity to get wet and slippery with a naked Hugh, Johnnie chose the option most likely to get him access to Hugh’s hard cock.

“I’m aroused,” he confessed as he dropped his gaze to his own dick, which was fully erect and parallel to his stomach. “Really, really aroused.”

Following Johnnie’s line of sight, Hugh’s chest rumbled. “Johnnie?” Hugh slid one hand behind Johnnie’s neck and the other down his chest. “Tell me what it feels like.”

I absolutely adore Cardeno C.’s shifter romances. Hot man-on-man action coupled with animal instincts and sweet romances – what’s not to love? Even when I’m not actually in the mood to read a paranormal romance, something about this author’s books just seems to call to me and CC has never let me down. Johnnie was no exception.

Because the book starts in what seems like mid-scene, I was a little off balance at the very beginning. But as the events unfold I came to realize that this was the author’s intention as it enabled me to experience what Hugh was going through when the Siphon attempted to end its life. The Siphon. Its Life. Odd choice of phrasing? Not at all. We learn rather quickly that the Siphon is seen as a possession of the pride, but specifically belonging to Hugh. As a Premier lion shifter, Hugh requires the presence of a Siphon lion shifter to do exactly that, siphon off and store his excess energy. This scenario is one that I have never encountered before in my reading and I absolutely loved it. One would think that such a symbiotic relationship would lead to a closeness between the Premier and the Siphon, especially as Siphons are even rarer than Premiers, but apparently that is not the case or at least it hasn’t been Hugh’s practice. Being forced to pay attention to the Siphon who has been by his side for close to ten years, Hugh is understandably horrified to learn that this was not the first time the Siphon had attempted suicide. But he is even more horrified to learn that it was his careless treatment of the Siphon that led to it. Hugh not only saw his own actions as thoughtless, but also as a failure to do his duty to protect ALL members of the pride. Initially he resents having to give up his downtime so that he can keep an eye on the Siphon, but as he gets to know the Siphon and comes to appreciate the man that he names Johnnie, his resentment turns to appreciation, friendship, companionship, and eventually, love.

One of the many things I enjoy about this author’s work is that regardless of whether a book is a novella or a full-length novel, it always leaves me satisfied with the experience. That said, as Johnnie is a full-length novel, CC was able to show Hugh and Johnnie’s relationship develop gradually over the course of the book. This not only gave me more time to enjoy their story, but it also gave the pride the opportunity to see Johnnie the man instead of the Siphon. As Hugh’s attraction for Johnnie strengthens, he comes to realization that Johnnie has never been with anyone… EVER. Because of this, the reader is treated to what amounts to Johnnie’s sexual awakening as Hugh takes his time introducing Johnnie to physical intimacies, which means lots of foreplay for Johnnie and the reader. I loved the twist that CC added when their physical relationship was finally consummated as it not only made for some seriously hot sex, it served as one heck of a flashing neon sign to point out that their relationship was meant to be. The added suspense element was merely the icing on the cake. Johnnie is yet another wonderful read from Cardeno C. and, as always, I’m already looking forward to the next book in the Siphon series.

Cardeno C. always delivers a fabulous read; Johnnie is no exception. I read my fair share of paranormal, and maybe more than my fair share of MM, but this is by far the most vivid read of any genre. I kept having to remind myself that they were in human form, because the ideas were so lion like. Crazy, but I so bought into the whole story, that I had no choice but to read it all, page after page without stopping.

This was, for me, a new side to this author's writing. In the past I have known that I would get a lovely, meaningful story that would go through a few significant bumps, but end well (I almost would write, end morally). This is even deeper than usual, it feels so intense, so important that these two discover what is happening. And at the same time a really hot passionate story is unfolding too.

Brilliant, loved it, thank you!

Cardeno C. – CC to friends – is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few "awwws" into a reader's day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. Cardeno's stories range from sweet to intense, contemporary to paranormal, long to short, but they always include strong relationships and walks into the happily-ever-after sunset.

Cardeno's Home, Family, and Mates series have received awards from Love Romances and More Golden Roses, Rainbow Awards, the Goodreads M/M Romance Group, and various reviewers. But even more special to CC are heartfelt reactions from readers, like, "You bring joy and love and make it part of the every day."
