Best New Artist by BA Tortuga

Kasey “Tuff” Tuffman just told Nashville to kiss his you know what. After winning Best New Artist at an award show, he knows it’s time to head back home to Texas. So after a very public meltdown, Tuff makes his way to Austin, where the Red Dirt music lives large.

Jonah Littlejohn once loved KT more than anything in the world. When KT loses it on national TV, Jonah knows he has to reach out and offer his home studio as a place to heal and make music. A bad relationship has left Jonah broken and wary of romance, but he wants to help his old lover out.

Seeing Jonah again proves to Tuff that he’s made the right decision. Now all he has to do is convince Jonah that they’re the most perfect duet there’s ever been.

As friends and lovers, Jonah and Tuff made music together for years until Jonah’s need for peace and Tuff’s need for fame tore them apart. When Tuff ends his Nashville career with a spectacular public meltdown, he makes his way home to Texas, where he seeks out Jonah and the music they have always shared. Jonah became professionally successful during their time apart, but the years haven’t been easy and Tuff returns to a very damaged man.

I love a second chance romance and I really loved both of these men. Tuff and Jonah’s shared obsession with music is beautiful and their easy collaborations are wonderful. In some ways, this doesn’t actually read like a traditional romance. Tuff and Jonah just meld naturally into a perfect creative companionship. There isn’t any artificial angst between these two. Before they can be lovers again, Tuff has to help Jonah deal with some pretty heavy emotional baggage and he does this slowly and patiently.

I love the music, I love the way Jonah’s compound has become almost a musical compound, and I love the friends, family, musicians, and dogs that fill Jonah and Tuff’s lives. This is a simple story – both Tuff and Jonah need fresh confidence and they need to take their second chance and build a life together that meets both their needs this time.

I really enjoy this author’s work. The story is just as good as the romance. I loved how JoJo and Tuff were able to get along so well, even after all the years apart and how things ended. To find out 10 years later that JoJo actually wrote some of Tuff’s songs was not only heartwarming but also a little sad. Imagine hearing your ex-love sing the song you wrote. I can't image. I loved the secondary characters as well. The only thing in this book that bothered me was the multiple nicknames and how in one sentence Tuff was Tuff, KD, and then Kasey. This was a touching story with so much love in it.

Texan to the bone and an unrepentant Daddy's Girl, BA spends her days with her basset hounds, getting tattooed, texting her sisters, and eating Mexican food. When she's not doing that, she's writing. She spends her days off watching rodeo, knitting and surfing Pinterest in the name of research. BA's personal saviors include her wife, Julia, her best friend, Sean, and coffee. Lots of good coffee.
