Come Back Around by BA Tortuga

Can two divorced dads get a second chance at a redneck wedding?

When Reid Porter agrees to be his best friend’s man of honor, he never considers that his ex, Mateo, will be there too. Which is ridiculous, because Jennifer is marrying Mat’s brother. Reid would never let Jen down, though, so he finds himself at the Leaning N Ranch with his two daughters and a whole lot of baggage about seeing Mat again.

Mat loves his baby brother and would do anything for him, including face the love of his life, whom he’s sure has moved on. When he and Reid come face-to-face after more than two years apart, they realize they’ve never let go. Now they have to do what they never could before—balance work, home, and children, while finding a way to come back around to each other’s love.

I will have to say that I have not read any books in the series but I still enjoyed this book and didn't have trouble reading it, so I am sure it can be read as a standalone. This book was so sweet and so funny. All the characters felt like family to me. I enjoyed Reid and Mateo. I wanted more backstory and that is maybe where I need to go back and read the previous books to find that out. I loved the ranch family and the bantering and jokes. This was a book that gave you the warm fuzzies. I think I might just go back and read the previous books when I need a feel-good book to lift my spirits.

This is the fourth book in the series – and it definitely adds to the background to have read the earlier books, but I think you could definitely enjoy it as a standalone too.

This is such a lovely story, with some of the funniest lines I have read in a book in a long time – sometimes due to their daughters making funny comments, but also the friends have a wicked line in banter. It was the perfect foil to what was a rather sad realisation that all the pain they had suffered over the last two years, and the times they had missed out on, was due to a terrible lack of communication.

Luckily, forced to be at the Leaning N for a wedding, Reid and Mateo get the second chance that they and their whole family want them take. And thanks to everyone being there, it gives them plenty of babysitters to give them time both to reconnect (and oh, do they reconnect!) and to talk.

Whilst their future together is the focus of the story, the wedding itself is fun, and the guys at the ranch that make everything happen are the perfect hosts. The cookery lessons are priceless.

A real feel good story, with family, passion, and at least one happily ever after!

Soft Place to Fall by BA Tortuga

Stetson Major and Curtis Traynor are about as opposite as two cowboys can get. Stetson is a rancher, tied to the land he loves in Taos, New Mexico, while Curtis is a rodeo cowboy whose wanderlust never could be tamed.

But now Stetson’s momma is dying of Alzheimer’s, and she can’t remember that Curtis hasn’t been Stetson’s boyfriend for a long time. Curtis’s absence makes her cry, so Stetson swallows his pride and calls his ex-lover.

To Curtis, Stetson is the one who got away, the love of his life. And Momma is his friend, so he’s happy to help out. Yet returning to the ranch stirs up all sorts of feelings that, while buried, never really went away. Still, the rodeo nationals are coming up, and Curtis can’t stay… even if he’s starting to want to, especially to support Stetson when he needs it most.

Stetson and Curtis want to find a place where they both fit, to be there to catch each other when they fall. But family, money problems, and the call of the rodeo circuit might end their second-chance romance before it even gets started.

BA Tortuga is one of my favourite writers of all things cowboy and rodeo – and this book is an excellent addition to the stable! It is a second-chance romance which starts due to a really sad reason, but continues as they both recognise that time has given them a chance to consider what is important, and how the future might work for them both.

Stetson is so beautifully brought to life in this book. His acceptance that he must be there for his mother, giving up all comfort, all his important woodworking tools to pay medical bills, and finally, swallowing his pride and asking his ex, Curtis, to visit her. His lack of energy, yet his determination to do the best he can. Feeding the animals before himself, holes in his boots... yet his spirit dulled as it is, can appreciate the good moments, and Curtis's return, even if it is only for his mother.

Curtis too is clearly a good man, who never forgot his first love. He has thrown his heart into being number one in his sport and ignoring his heart. Now giving it a chance to love again, he knows that he has to be the strong one for his friend, and hopefully they will both come out the other end stronger and together. Sad as it was, I thought that the scenes with Stetson's mother, and with the neighbours, who had not known how to be there when she was still alive, finally come and help him in his grief. Thank goodness Curtis was there to support him.

Obviously there are some other twists for you to enjoy, but rest assured that they are both soft places for each other to fall!

This was a fun, fast read. Max and Morgan hit it off instantly and go on what seems like one huge non-stop vacation. Money was no object and sex filled the pages. While the story was enjoyable and I liked Max and Morgan, I couldn't connect or relate to them because everything was outlandish to me. If you enjoy this author, you'll enjoy this book.

Stetsons and Stakeouts by BA Tortuga

Gianni Cesare is a DEA agent and rancher—who also happens to be a millionaire heir to an Italian count. Running a multiagency sting out of his East Texas ranch means he needs a new foreman… preferably someone a little wet behind the ears who won’t ask too many questions.

Gianni’s Aunt Jerilyn hires Bonner Fannin, a roughstock rider with zero ranch experience and a sister who’s pregnant with a violent biker’s twins. If that’s not bad enough, Bonner is pretending he and his sister are married to protect her and to help get him the job.

Gianni didn’t think Bonner was the marrying type during their torrid beach affair years ago, but he’s not sure if he has time to explore that thought now, as overrun as his ranch is with drug cartels, macho government agents, and local cops. Looks like Bonner and Gianni are both in over their heads, and they may have to band together during this adventure to swim rather than sink.

Gianni is a DEA agent who learns that there are drugs running right through his ranch. Because he knows this land and wants to protect his aunt and the town, he offers to have his ranch be their sting operation where he plays the part of not knowing how to ranch.

The other members of his team are from all of the different acronyms. They all are the best and want to take down this ring of drug runners.

Gianni's aunt is a character and she's in charge of hiring a new ranch manager. Her objective is to hire someone who isn't going to ask questions. She wants to find someone to just do their job and stay out of the way. She ends up hiring Bonner. He and his pregnant companion are running and trying to hide.

Bonner and Gianni have a past. The attraction is still present and while Gianni is supposed to be finding the drugs and drug runners, he can't seem to keep his mind off Bonner. As for Bonner, he doesn't want his cover to be blown, but he can't seem to stay away from Gianni, despite what's at stake.

What follows is a fast-paced mystery of bad guys versus good guys. I loved the secondary characters and thought that the relationship between Gianni and Bonner was well developed. I do wish that we knew more about the ins and out of the mystery... there was so much going on that I found myself having to go back to make sure that I was understanding everything. But this was a great story with a lot going on.

I do hope that more books will come, as Gianni's crew could all use their own story.

Heart of a Redneck by Jodi Payne & BA Tortuga

Colby McBride is a blue-collar cowboy trying to make ends meet laying tile in Colorado. A loner by choice, Colby works hard with his hands and finds his peace camping in the mountains outside Boulder. Gordon James is a white-collar restaurateur who owns not one, but two successful establishments in downtown Boulder. He’s a sophisticated urbanite who is devoted to his work and is accustomed to getting what he wants.

The men are friends, but sparks fly when Colby falls in love and decides to show Gordon how much fun a good old boy can be. They’re just beginning to explore their relationship when Gordon’s sister’s suicide leaves him with custody of his five-year-old niece.

Colby comes from a huge family and is eager to help with the girl and to prove his worth to Gordon. But neither of them is ready for the tremendous changes to their already busy lives, or for how this new relationship with Olivia challenges them, complicating the way they interact with each other.

They say opposites attract, but can these two very different men work together to join their disparate lives and form a strong, if highly unlikely, family?

Angela – ☆☆☆☆
I really enjoyed Heart of a Redneck. While I think this might be the first book by Jodi Payne I’ve read, I’m a big fan of BA Tortuga’s writing, especially her Texas cowboys, so it was a no-brainer to pick this one up. I gotta say that Colby and Gordon certainly kept me twisted up inside because it was so obvious to see how well matched they were, even if on paper they shouldn’t work. Despite knowing that Payne and Tortuga would give the guys the happy ending they (and the reader) deserved, it still proved to be a bumpy ride fraught with emotional tension, sexual tension, and huge upheavals that had me wondering how they were going to make it all work out in the end.

One of the things I really liked about this book was that we get to spend a good chunk of time with Colby and Gordon before Gordon’s world is turned upside down. I love that the authors gave me a chance to get to know Colby and Gordon, both as individuals and as a potential couple – an idea they had both been toying with when their thoughts strayed to the future. These two had some serious chemistry and it was easy to see them becoming more than friends with benefits, especially after seeing them hanging out together and how comfortable they were in one another’s company. Because of the way the foundation for their fledgling relationship was laid, it was easy to accept Colby jumping in feet first to help Gordon out when he had to assume guardianship of his niece, Olivia.

I also enjoyed how Payne and Tortuga balanced out Gordon’s complex emotions with Colby’s straightforwardness. It would be really easy to characterize Colby as a simple man, but it was more that he saw what needed to be done and utilized the skills he had to get it done. In the same vein, it would have been even easier to see Gordon as a user who was taking advantage of Colby’s generosity and kind-hearted nature when it came to Oliva – I know I fought with just that. The fact that Gordon worked so hard to avoid dealing with his sister’s suicide just added to that because his coping mechanism of throwing himself into his work made it easy to forget that the man not only suffered a loss, but his whole world changed in a way he never planned for – he was suddenly a father, even though he’d never wanted children. That Colby seemed so comfortable with Olivia and eased her transition into her uncle’s home, while appreciated, added to Gordon’s feeling of being overwhelmed because he saw his inability to connect with his niece as a personal failure, which strained his already precarious relationship with Colby. Getting the story from both men’s perspective went a long way in helping me not demonize Gordon and automatically side with Colby, but it also made me adore Colby that much more because the man was such a sweetheart who put his love for that little girl ahead of the seemingly inevitable heartbreak he was headed for with Gordon. Rather than risk ruining the story for anyone, I’m gonna stop here and say that if you’re a fan of Payne or Tortuga, if you enjoy opposites attract romances, or if you enjoy going along for a bumpy ride to happiness, then you’ll want to check out Heart of a Redneck because Colby’s is a big one and so full of love that I dare you not to fall in love with his redneck heart.

Jodi Payne

JODI PAYNE spent too many years in New York and San Francisco stage managing classical plays, edgy fringe work, and the occasional musical. She therefore is overdramatic, takes herself way too seriously, and has been known to randomly break out in song. Her men are imperfect but genuine, stubborn but likeable, often kinky, and frequently their own worst enemies. They are characters you can’t help but fall in love with while they stumble along the path to their happily ever after.

For those looking to get on her good side, Jodi’s addictions include nonfat lattes, Malbec and tequila however you pour it. She’s also obsessed with Shakespeare and Broadway musicals. She can be found wearing sock monkey gloves while typing when it’s cold, and on the beach enjoying the sun and the ocean when it’s hot. When she’s not writing and/or vacuuming sand out of her laptop, Jodi mentors queer youth and will drop everything for live music.

Jodi lives near New York City with her beautiful wife, and together they are mothers of dragons (cleverly disguised as children) and slaves to an enormous polydactyl cat.

Latigo by BA Tortuga

Being a hard-core rodeo cowboy means getting by with little money and less of a future. But for two hardscrabble rodeo riders, that might change…

Dean’s been around the rodeo circuit long enough to know when a new kid is down on his luck. Giving young Will a ride to the next event is just the neighborly thing to do, passing on some of the kindness strangers have shown him over the years. Who’d expect Will to be such good company? So good in fact, that Dean figures he might just keep Will around—especially since Will feels the same.

Traveling from rodeo to rodeo enjoying all the fringe benefits they can is a dream come true for Dean and Will. Troubles with Dean’s family and Will’s stubborn pride separate them for a while, but they always come back together when the chips are down. These two cowboys are a match made in heaven—now they just need to convince everyone else to let them live the life they love and find their future together.

Also includes the bonus novella, Bits of Leather, which continues Dean and Will’s story!

2nd Edition

I can't believe I am going to say this but... this book has too much sex. I hardly ever say that because I hate books without sex, but this one just has too much. I found myself skipping the sexy parts, which very rarely happens with me. I wanted more Dean and Will. I didn't feel like I connected with them except when they were having sex. A little more story and less sex would have made this a four or five star for me.

Two Cowboys and a Baby by BA Tortuga Audiobook Review

A little bundle of joy means big changes.

Hoss McMasters has a working ranch, a bull riding career, a nosy momma, and a best friend he’s been in love with since he can remember. He’s a busy, happy cowboy, living the good life.

Then one morning he discovers a baby on his doorstep.

Well, Hoss does what any reasonable man would do—he calls his momma and his buddy, Sheriff Pooter, and they head to the clinic to see if Doc knows of any suddenly not-so-pregnant girls.

In the meantime, Hoss and his best friend, Bradley, have their hands full trying to care for an infant, run a ranch, and deal with the sudden confession that Bradley doesn’t hate Hoss for coming out to him in high school. In fact, Bradley’s been trying to catch Hoss’s attention for damn near a decade.

B.A. Tortuga is my go-to author for cowboy romances. While Two Cowboys and a Baby is on the softer side of romance, despite its soap-opera twist, the author does not disappoint. Actually, for a standalone title, the story is perhaps more complex and convoluted than I’m accustomed to as Tortuga succeeds in packing in several themes. Abandoned baby. Unrequited love. Two gay daddies. Reassessing one’s priorities in life after an injury. The big one I cannot say because on the off chance that someone else hasn’t revealed that spoiler, I won’t be the one to do it, but rest assured, it is straight out of a soap opera. And yet Tortuga pulls it all off, including a wink and a nod to the unbelievability of a classic soap opera twist.

As the blurb states, Hoss wakes one morning to find a baby abandoned on his doorstep. Instead of being able to hand the child off to the authorities, Hoss winds up accepting responsibility for the infant for the weekend. And then the following week. And then that next weekend. And the next thing you know, Hoss has become the little girl’s unofficial foster dad because the town sheriff and the town doc are trying to figure out who the mom is without getting child services involved. As fantastical as it sounds, I can soooooo totally see the sequence of events that play out in the book actually happening in a small rural town. When the locals close ranks, a small town in the middle of nowhere can operate like its own kingdom – for better and for worse. Unsurprisingly, the longer the little girl is in Hoss’ care, the more attached he gets. What is surprising, especially for Hoss, is learning that his straight best friend, Bradley, ain’t nearly as straight as he let Hoss believe. That shock is only the first of many that Tortuga continues to throw at Hoss, keeping the man on his toes constantly. To be honest, I’m not sure what surprised me more – the circumstances that led to Hoss and Bradley’s falling out, the actual falling out, or what led to Bradley pulling his head out of his derriere and making amends to Hoss. Yep, I implied it and I’ll outright say it, Bradley was in the wrong and his pride kept him in the wrong. As this is not only a B.A. Tortuga cowboy romance, but also a Dreamspun Desires title, you can rest assured that a happy ending is delivered, but it is one bumpy, twisty road to ride to get there.

As much as I enjoyed Dorian Bane’s narrative performance in a paranormal romance last week, the man does the cowboy drawl beautifully. Just as Tortuga is my go-to author for cowboy romances, Bane has quickly become my favorite narrator for western romances. I was very impressed with Bane’s ability to create so many distinct voices for a rather large cast of side characters, all while keeping those Texas drawls and twangs in play. Not an easy feat, I’d assume, yet it enhances the listening experience and makes an already enjoyable story even more entertaining. For me, Two Cowboys and a Baby was classic Tortuga and a perfect story for showcasing Bane’s narrative talents. I look forward to more from both the author and the narrator, especially if there’s another collaboration between them – THAT would be just dandy.

Cowboy in the Crosshairs by BA Tortuga

Once upon a time, a prince lived in a magical kingdom called Turquoise, New Mexico.

Well, really, TJ is a small-town police chief. Every Friday he holds court in the diner with the local holy roller, the art colonists, and the horsey people. But the Benes, who own the rodeo company, keep to themselves. TJ knows, because he was once hot and heavy with the oldest Bene son.

When Wacey Bene gets trampled by a remuda and comes home to heal, he’s none too happy to run into TJ, or his two little boys and their momma. The story might end there—if it wasn’t for some pesky bastard trying to kill Wacey.

The law steps in, and the townsfolk are cross about somebody messing with one of their own.

But once the bad guy is put away, can TJ and Wacey make their place in this wild and eccentric town a permanent one?

This is the first in the new series, and I think it holds a lot of promise for future installments. There is a fair degree of world building for both Turquoise and the rodeo setting. I enjoyed the set up and the plot, and I did guess the perpetrator, but it played out really well.

I did like the second chance romance, and the lack of angst between TJ and his ex-wife, and Wacey. It was a refreshing change, in fact, it was dealt with humour. I also laughed when one of the boys told Wacey that there was a jar of pasta sauce! The little details were lovely additions to the overall story, rather than a distraction. Sometimes the flow was a little off. I think it was difficult to keep the timeline clear when showing the story from two very different viewpoints. I found some of the ancillary characters did not add much or could have done so without so much fanfare – Peter in particular.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and would be happy to find myself reading more about the people of Turquoise.

Living in Fast Forward by BA Tortuga

Acclaimed musician Hollis Lee is a little bit rock, a little bit country, and a lot in need of some TLC to mend the years of hardcore partying that threatens to ruin his career. Hollis’s manager, Charlie, has the perfect solution in mind.

Personal trainer Jeremy is even-keeled and nothing if not professional—which means doing his job, getting Hollis back to his fighting weight, and ignoring his fierce attraction to the rock star.

Turns out Hollis has a harder time resisting Jeremy than giving up sausage biscuits and cheeseburgers, but succumbing to temptation could end both of their careers. While Hollis is on tour, no one questions Jeremy’s presence, and that means plenty of time to sneak away for some steamy fun on the tour bus. But when an accident separates them, how will they sustain the relationship that’s starting to mean so much?

This is a sweet and sexy story about the relationship between a country rock star and the personal trainer hired to get him into shape. Jeremy and Hollis don’t hit it off too well at the start, but soon their playful bromance turns into a proper romance. Personally, I loved the friendship between Hollis and Jeremy but I didn’t fully engage with the rest of the story.

There is a whole lotta sex in this story. Maybe too much. By the mid-point, it feels constant and kinda repetitive. Three quarters of the way in, I was skimming through some of the sex scenes and my eyes still tracked repetitive descriptive phrases. After a while, the sex just stopped being sexy and I grew a little bit bored.

It isn’t just the sex that’s repetitive. Hollis and Jeremy spend most of the book stuck on a tour bus together with only themselves for company. The monotony is probably pretty realistic, but it doesn’t make for great fiction writing. There are lots of workout scenes but I felt like we could have seen more of Hollis as a musician and a performer.

I found myself a bit confused by the storyline involving Hollis’ manager. I kept waiting for Hollis to stand up to the man or put him in his place. Instead, we get a rock star placating his manager and sneaking around like a naughty teenager on a field trip. It didn’t quite work for me. I also found the ending frustrating and not terribly satisfying.
