Wolf Pack by Crissy Smith

He’s a lone wolf no longer.

Wolf Shifter Cole Babcock is now the leader of a unit within the Shifter Coalition. As a lone wolf he’s working hard to handle his new duties and working with a team. He doesn’t mind working hard and it’s not like he has anyone to go home to.

Kendra Brown, a US Marshal, is tracking a missing witness and needs the help of the Coalition. Her first meeting with the team leader reveals that they’ve met before. In one explosive night of passion.

Things are changing fast for the two shifters. The case that brought them together runs into complication after complication. There are rogues being held hostage, Kendra’s witness is in danger, and Cole’s been offered a chance of a lifetime. The Alpha of the local wolf pack wants Cole to take over the position from him.

Cole begins to rely on Kendra for everything from closing the case to speaking with the Alpha. As they grow closer, Cole realizes how strong his feelings for Kendra are. He isn’t alone anymore.

With their lives in danger, only the love they share will get them through the week.

Reviews by the Wicked Reads Review Team

While I did enjoy Wolf Pack, it wasn’t all that I had hoped it to be. Even though this is the fifth book in the series, I read it as a standalone. I wasn’t confused by the storyline as far as the series goes, but I suspect I would have enjoyed it more had I read it where it fell within the series order because I believe I would have had a familiarity with many of the characters, particularly Cole.

The first chapter does a nice job of setting the stage for the novel, but then I felt as though things moved too fast after that, at least for a while. It was actually an unusual feeling for me because I’m not unaccustomed to the end of a book being rushed, but it felt as though the author was trying to communicate so much in the beginning that it just left me feeling rushed. And far be it from me to complain about the speed at which two shifters hook up because I am a huge fan of the mating instinct in shifter romances, but neither Kendra or Cole seemed to acknowledge that that’s what was going on and was why they were so drawn to one another. But putting all of that aside, once I hit the second half of the book, I was engrossed. The active search for the witness, the cooperation between the Coalition and the pack, the rescue of the rogues, and the hunt for the bad guys kept my attention rapt for the remainder of the book. Amidst their law enforcement duties, Kendra and Cole shined, and struck a nice balance between their personal lives and their professional duties – and this helped to balance out the book for me. Despite an active hunt, the pacing of the story no longer felt frantic.

I appreciated that once the bad guys had been caught, that Smith didn’t end the book. Rather, she continued the story to show Cole shedding his lone wolf status and becoming a member of the pack, a very valued member of the pack. We also got to see how Kendra meshed with Cole’s coworkers and friends. And the relationship development continued, showing a strengthening of their bond beyond simply being drawn to one another. Smith does add some interesting twists to the shifter world that she has created and I would be interested in starting at the beginning because I like the idea of a world in which shifters are “out” in the human world. Overall, Wolf Pack was an enjoyable read, but if you’re like myself and haven’t read the previous novels in the series, I recommend you start at the beginning.
