Jared, a guard on one of the many penal space stations, is
good at his job, but painfully naive. Getting convicted of a crime he didn’t
commit and being sentenced to a life in prison did not feature in his vision of
the future. When he gets rescued--then promptly claimed as property by Sar, the
most dangerous and biggest man on the penal station--he’s just about ready to
faint...gracefully, of course.
But Sar is a genius with a hidden face and big expectations. Sar expects Jared to learn to fight, to serve his sexual needs, and to socialize with Sar’s friends. So while Jared works on his stances and, surprisingly, can’t get enough of sex, he still has trouble cheerfully conversing with the same men who would rather kill him or claim him for their own.
All of that changes with new arrivals, a kidnapping, and secret agendas. Will Jared survive torture--and is Sar bad and mad enough to rescue him--or are they more likely to perish when the clock ticks down and the station blinks out with the sound of an explosion?

Penal Station 05 gripped me from the opener where Sar described the new arrivals, Jared being one of them, setting up the dark, depressive, oppressive feel of the dystopian/futuristic space station prison.
A bit of a warning for those who love a sweet, fluffy, MM romance, expecting something you've previously read from the prison or science fiction genre: Penal Station 05 is dark, showing baser human reactions and the lengths they had to go in order to survive. But there is a strong romance thread underlying the darkness that develops as the story does. As well as a slight BDSM D/s bent that was hot to read but seems to get forgotten as the story evolves.
Sar was a formidable character, proving that education doesn't happen in the classroom. Not a criminal, but born in the system to a very unfortunate mother, Sar learned every language spoken on the station. He has a highly mature philosophy on life – explaining why his fellow inmates did as they do, stating boredom for the worst of it. There were a few points in his backstory that lent to the notion that perhaps the powers that be were trying their best to take care of him (the influx of new arrivals, as well as delivering him books). Lonely, never knowing kindness since his father's death, Sar has an odd ethical code, but he's ethical nonetheless.
Jared was the perfect counterbalance to Sar. A new arrival being fought over as if he were a food source. Ex-prison guard from another station, Jared is dropped into the forgotten wasteland known as 05. He's compassionate and a sponge for the emotions Sar has never been able to express.
I enjoyed the quick-pacing and the easy flow of the author's writing voice. My only complaint are two misplaced lusty scenes in the end of the longer novella. I experienced a now? You're going to do this right now? feeling, and rolled my eyes. It lessened the impact of what was going on around them, in my honest opinion, especially after being tortured.
Other than that minor issue, I truly enjoyed this futuristic story, Sar especially, and I look forward to reading more books in this series.

I didn't know what to expect from this book, I was pleasantly surprised.
Jared is framed for a crime he didn't commit and sentenced to the penal station where only the worst of criminals go. He is attacked when he first arrives and is saved by Sar, a sexy and smart inmate. To survive, Jared hands himself over to Sar, who protects him with his life.
Things are not what they seem on this station and soon it all kicks off.
This book had so many twists and turns, it kept me interested from start to finish.
I would totally read more from this series.

As an avid reader for many years, she had a habit of mixing fiction with reality, until she realized that she could simply breathe life to her characters and make them as real as they could get. From forever romantic to deeply troubled, they bring joy to their creator as well as frustration with their naughty behavior.
Kinky imagination aside; she enjoys music and movies just as much as reading, but give her summer all year round and she’ll be ready to free climb, swim, or stretch in all those mind stirring yoga positions.
