Life during the Dust Bowl is hard and it seems it’s only getting harder for some. Opal is doing her best trying to hang on and when Sam from the bank comes along saying she has to refinance or lose her home, it’s the last straw. She urges him to leave at the end of the gun, but Sam is hard to run off.
Unwilling to accept anything other than friendship, Opal is hesitant to get close to Sam, afraid that he's going to want more and she doesn't have anything else left to give. Sam is determined to overcome Opal's misgivings and to do his best to save her farm.
The author did a great job bringing the harshness that was the Dust Bowl to a new generation and the resilience of those who lived through it.
I’ve always been a storyteller, just as I’ve always been an avid reader. I love stories that twist reality at its edges, and adore new takes on old myths and legends. I’ve travelled extensively, which has given me the opportunity to hear many legends from many cultures and I make use of these in my stories as often as possible.
