Out on the Ice by Lane Hayes Audiobook Release Blitz

Colby Fischer is a bad boy with attitude and a chip on his shoulder. As a senior at a Southern California college, he knows this may be his last shot. He doubts he’ll ever become the hockey legend he dreamed of being as a kid, but he definitely doesn’t want to be an accountant. Things get interesting when he’s asked to train the new intern at his step-dad’s firm, who happens to be the troublemaker from his econ class. And the one guy Colby can’t stand.

Baseball is Sky Jameson’s life. He’s happy to be back at Chilton for his senior year, but he’s burned a few bridges and has a bit too much free time off-season. He could use the money and something to keep him busy until his season begins. But his accidental crush on his prickly coworker could be a problem. Colby is straight and Sky is in the closet. Their timing isn’t great, but the intense attraction is hard to deny. With his final season on the hockey team in the balance, Colby may have to decide if he’s ready to come out on the ice.

As a matter of habit, I tend to relisten to a series before a new installment is released, even when it’s a series of standalones. However, with all that is going on in the world right now, my attention span is wandering too much to immerse myself in audiobooks properly. So I didn’t get to refresh my memory of the guys in this series who make cameo appearances from one story to the next and, as such, have no recollection of whether Sky or Colby have appeared in earlier books – not to mention, I missed book #4 (Out in the Field) entirely. In essence, for me, Out on the Ice was listened to as a standalone and I can confirm that you don’t have to have read or listened to the previous books in the series to enjoy it, but if you’re of the curious sort, you may find yourself wanting to backtrack to the beginning.

While I expected the level of new adult angst Hayes injects into this college romance, I was not expecting the explosive beginning. This is one of those times when a character who claims to have anger management issues actually displays anger management issues. But Colby is also working on his issue throughout the book and Hayes shows this as well and I thought that was well done too as we got to see him reign in his anger and get pushed beyond his current skill set. I love romances in which one or more of the characters are discovering a new facet of their sexuality and I’m always intrigued by the choices they make in terms of their coming out. In Colby’s case, once he realizes he’s bisexual, his decision to stay in the closet is made easier by the fact that Sky isn’t ready to come out of his closet either. Since both guys are athletes, this makes sense (unfortunately) and alleviates enough pressure that their relationship is allowed to develop absent of the outside pressure from family, friends, and teammates. So what begins as a mutually beneficial sexual exploration gradually becomes a more meaningful relationship that Colby and Sky must decide whether it’s worth coming out for when that closet door is swung open. CUE ALL THE ANGST!!! And yep, this girly teared up a bit when Colby’s heart took a pounding worse than the one Schultz gave him on the ice. Fortunately, this author never fails to deliver the happy ending that makes Lane Hayes’ romances a must-read (or listen) for me.

Once again, Michael Dean is responsible for breathing life into the men of the Out in College series. Not surprisingly, he did a great job. Dean nails the competitive intensity I expect from college athletes. He also walks that fine line that separates new adult angst from whiny, entitled college student and does it well. Yes, there are times when Colby treads into whiny, entitled college student territory, but it seems more like it’s part of his defense mechanism when his anger is rising – or I should say, that was the impression I got based on Dean’s performance and it made Colby more palatable when his anger took that path. I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing Hayes’ Out on the Ice through Dean’s narrative performance and hope there are more books to come – as long as it’s not Schultz because that douche nozzle doesn’t deserve a Lane Hayes’ man. Until then, I still have book four to go back to and enjoy.

Lane Hayes is grateful to finally be doing what she loves best. Writing full-time! It’s no secret Lane loves a good romance novel. An avid reader from an early age, she has always been drawn to well-told love story with beautifully written characters. These days she prefers the leading roles to both be men. Lane discovered the M/M genre a few years ago and was instantly hooked. Her debut novel was a 2013 Rainbow Award finalist and subsequent books have received Honorable Mentions, and won first prize in the 2016 and 2017 Rainbow Awards. She loves red wine, chocolate and travel (in no particular order). Lane lives in Southern California with her amazing husband in a newly empty nest.
