Last Chance by RJ Scott Release Blitz

It’s the last year of college and Luke can’t forget the captain of the hockey team, or the kiss they shared as freshman.

Justin has to decide if hockey outweighs his attraction to Luke, because this might be the last chance he’ll have of making things right.

Author’s Note: This short story was previously released in the Love For All Seasons Charity Anthology.

This is a very short, but fully formed story. By contracting the timeline, RJ Scott manages to make what could seem to be hasty into a cliffhanger until the very last few pages. It also worked by being utterly believable, and whilst sad for time lost hopeful of a much happier future.

If you have a coffee break coming up, make sure this is on your e-reader too, as it will give you something good to think about all day.

This is a sweet and angsty story of a second chance romance between a college hockey star and the geeky guy who has spent his college years worshiping him from a distance. It is a short story full of heightened new adult emotions and pretty light on plot. Parts of the central conflict don’t quite make sense, but Luke is adorable from the start and Justin turns out to be entirely loveable.

This is a very short read and I think some of the page count includes the blurbs for other books by the same author. Within very few pages, the author makes both Justin and Luke feel real, but their friends remain stock characters and the jock/geek thing doesn’t quite move past the stereotypes.

Last Chance is a cute little snack of a story to read on a short lunch break or a long coffee break. It’s a short story that gives you a glimpse into the night that Justin realized time was running out on him if he wanted any chance of finding out if he had a future with the copper-haired nerd who caught his eye on their first day of college. But as the story is told from Luke’s point of view, we get to experience his confusion and bafflement as Justin’s hockey teammates deliver fresh apologies for their misdeeds in the past, misdeeds they worried would keep Luke from taking Justin’s soon-to-occur advances seriously. The whole apology scene was rather amusing because Luke couldn’t decide if he’d had a little too much beer or if the guys were pranking him. Fortunately for all involved, Justin channels his on-ice tenacity to get Luke to give him a second chance.

Knowing that Last Chance was a short story that first appeared in an anthology helped temper my expectations because even the best authors can develop their characters only so much within such a short page count. For me, the story was an enjoyable glimpse into the night these two guys reconnected with a little help from (or in spite of said help from) their friends, complete with the right amount of steam. Obviously, I would have loved to have read more of their story as I’m a big fan of Scott’s writing, but the informal epilogue gave me just enough info to round out the story and leave me hopeful for Luke and Justin’s future – and still get back to work on time.

RJ’s goal is to write stories with a heart of romance, a troubled road to reach happiness, and most importantly, that hint of a happily ever after.

RJ is the author of the over one hundred novels and discovered romance in books at a very young age. She realized that if there wasn’t romance on the page, she could create it in her head, and is a lifelong writer.

She lives and works out of her home in the beautiful English countryside, spends her spare time reading, watching films, and enjoying time with her family.

The last time she had a week’s break from writing she didn’t like it one little bit and has yet to meet a bottle of wine she couldn’t defeat.

She’s always thrilled to hear from readers, bloggers and other writers.
