Evolved by N.R. Walker

In 2068, androids are an integrated part of human life. Big Brother no longer just watches from the shadows. It's in every household.

Lloyd Salter has OCD issues with noise and mess, and he's uncomfortable with human interaction. When his ex claimed the only thing perfect enough to live up to his standards was an android, Lloyd dismissed it. But two years later, after much self-assessment, he thinks he may have been right.

SATinc is the largest manufacturer of androids in Australia, including the Fully Compatible Units known as an A-Class 10. Their latest design is the Synthetic Human Android UNit, otherwise known as SHAUN.

Shaun is compatible to Lloyd's every need; the perfect fit on an intellectual and physical basis. But Lloyd soon realises Shaun's not like other A-Class androids. He learns. He adapts. Sure that SATinc is aware Shaun functions outside of his programmed parameters, Lloyd must find a way to keep Shaun safe.

No one can know how special Shaun is. No one can know he's evolved.

To be honest, I have no clue how to review Evolved. This is the first book of its kind I've read, outside of Young Adult virtual reality books that are slightly similar, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I was hooked during the first paragraph, reading the entire book in one sitting without interruption, feverishly clicking to see what happened next.

Lloyd is analytical, an introvert, who had tactile and sensory issues when dealing with his fellow humans, combined with OCD. With a similar personality, I 'got' Lloyd, how you feel as if you're cold due to being too analytical and exacting. At the same time, I understood how he felt skeeved out when it came to consent with his android. Lloyd didn't want to feel as if he was taking advantage, purchasing a companion. While some would perceive these attributes as warring personality traits, you can be highly empathetic and caring, while also being analytical and perceived as emotionally cold.

Watching Shaun evolve through the duration of the book was a delight. The android's sense of humor, his randiness, his forcefulness, all of this added levity and depth, almost more human/humanity than Lloyd brought to the table.

The human was more android-like than the android, and the android was more human-like than the human, which created an intriguing story and balance to their relationship.

The story itself was hyper-focused on Lloyd and Shaun's interactions, with a very small cast of characters. There was a heavy influence on between-the-sheets action, which was both inventive yet clinical, while also bringing in warmer emotions.

As the book evolves so does Shaun. As Shaun evolves, Lloyd's fear strengthens, adding the sharp edge of conflict.

I was entertained during every page, felt intrigued, hot and bothered, and emotional near the ending. Evolved was a unique book, showing love from a different viewpoint, the open-mindedness could/should help the reader be more open in reality to all forms of love.

When the opportunity to review this book came up on my review team I almost passed it up because sci-fi isn't my thing. However, it was by N.R. Walker, so I read the blurb and told our review team guru "I don't normally read this genre but the blurb reminds me of the movie Bicentennial Man and I loved that movie." I started reading the book on a Friday night and I kept putting it down. Not because I didn't like it but because I fell in love with it and never wanted it to end!!! I loved Lloyd and how he always wanted Shaun to be called Shaun and not an android. I love how their relationship and story evolved. I was at a crucial part in the book and a few tears had started to slip out when my husband decided we both needed to go to the store. I was like no!!! I need to finish this book. To which he said it would be here when we got back. I told him to be prepared for waterworks because I just KNEW I was gonna cry like a baby!!! Guess what?? I cried like a baby!! It was so amazingly good. If I could give it a million stars I would. This book will be my go-to book when I need a feel-good story. I am so glad I decided to give it a go!

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is many things: a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don’t let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words. She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things... but likes it even more when they fall in love.

She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since...
