I Heart Boston Terriers by Rick R. Reed Audiobook Review

Love at first sight can work for dogs as well as humans.

When Aaron finds Mavis, an emaciated and timid Boston terrier, at a pet adoption fair, his heart goes out to her—irrevocably.

When Christian, who is manning the adoption fair for the Humane Society that fateful autumn Saturday, finds Aaron, his heart goes out to him—irrevocably.

I Heart Boston Terriers is all about embracing love, whether it’s for someone who walks on four legs, or someone who walks on two. The Boston terrier Mavis’ journey back to wholeness and finding her forever home runs parallel to the story of two men discovering one another at just that perfect moment—a moment that defies logic, propriety, and common sense.

But then when do the dictates of love follow a rational course?

Come along for a journey about a man and his dog and see how that journey teaches him the truth about love and making a caring connection that just might last a lifetime.

I don't often listen to audiobooks, but a longish solitary journey had me looking for a suitable companion. After listening to the sample, so that I knew that I could engage with the voice, I downloaded the book.

Audio review – I think that this was well read, and there was enough distinction between characters for me to enjoy the narration. I didn't understand why there was music between some chapters and silence for others, but it wasn't really a problem. I would look out for more books with this narrator.

Story review – I found this to have a really sweet start with brother Aaron and sister Becca talking about why he was staying with her in her studio apartment, and her persuading him he should get the terrier for company. I was a little confused as to how this really was a good idea in a small space and with a Maine Coon already in situ, but in the interests of the story... The love interest, Christian, was rather cheeky to use Aaron's contact details for a private reason, but it pushed the story forward.

One incident later and Becca has turned from supportive to completely crazed, and I have to admit, I jumped a little as I was driving along, as the change of attitude was so unexpectedly vehement. In fact, I paused the book for a minute to try and think had I missed something as she was so angry. I couldn't really fathom her change in behaviour, other than she was upset that her brother was already interested in someone else and she had a failed date.

It certainly had me thinking and passed the time well but was a slightly unexpected outcome to the story.
